Podcast Episode Transcript:
Do it yourself 'ers,
listen up carefully here.
Um,
because I'm pretty sure I know what Lyndol is gonna tell me.
I've asked,
uh,
Lyndol Woodruff to join me from Woodruff Windows Greater D. F. W.
Hey,
Bud Greater D F W area.
He,
he is the window guy for you if you're in that part of Texas.
And hey,
uh,
I get these questions here at the radio show.
And you know,
this one though is I don't want to call it a silly question,
but I'm gonna pose it.
And this is,
can I install new windows myself?
That's what the homeowner is asking.
Can I install new windows myself?
And I guess if you go to the big box store,
you can buy windows a lot of downsides to that though,
starting with the window and then ending up with the installer,
which would be the homeowner.
What do you think about installing new windows?
It is a very detailed art to get them installed with such,
you know,
level of perfection to even perform,
right?
So,
no,
please don't attempt to install your own windows.
I,
that's funny.
You said that because I literally came across an article the other day designed for homeowners to install their own windows.
And I'm like,
you gotta be kidding me.
It all this super diy,
uh,
mindset these days,
like some,
some things leave to professionals.
I mean,
our installers have been doing it for decades and that's all they do.
Um,
yeah,
don't,
don't put the,
the stress on you and try.
Yeah.
No.
No,
don't do it.
Yeah.
Uh,
do not attempt this at home.
Isn't that what they say when you're,
you know,
watching,
uh America's got talent or something and someone's being shot out of a cannon at 80,000 ft or something crazy.
And on a motorcycle flipping backwards 10 times,
um,
do not attempt this at home.
This is a professional and it's true of many home improvement things you don't want to put your own roof on.
That would be just absolutely bonkers.
That's,
that's really crazy.
Ok.
Windows is one thing,
a new roof is something else you don't want to put your new H VAC system in and a lot of people wouldn't even consider that.
Of course.
Um Do you want to like maybe lay some tile in your half bath?
Sure.
Go for that.
Ok.
You can always,
not much,
not much to lose there.
Ok.
But from technology,
you know,
in the window itself to all the years of experience that a good window installer has like woodruff does it,
it doesn't make any sense.
I mean,
are you gonna pull your own teeth and drill your own teeth.
Are you gonna take your own appendix out?
And people probably think I'm being silly.
It's like that guy driving down the freeway going 70 with two mattresses on top of his truck and without fail,
he's got the arm out the window holding,
holding it.
Yeah,
the mattresses are going.
It's gonna work,
buddy.
Oh my gosh.
That Taylor I can do it.
And every once in a while we do see bed parts on the freeway.
Yes,
we do.
Uh,
and sheet rock is a big one.
People are like,
I'll just strap some four by eight sheets of sheet rock to my Subaru.
Oh,
that's a good idea.
Right.
Because how often we gonna go leave the window installation to the pros guys and it's not me.
I,
I,
no,
I wouldn't.
Mm mm.
No.
Our,
our guys,
it's amazing to watch them work.
That's why I like to go.
I go to every job site,
you know,
just to,
I,
I like watching them work.
They're,
they're phenomenal and it's an art and it does that even you're not gonna put your own windows and you're gonna hire your own guys.
I mean.
Yeah.
Right.
And,
and it's not here,
here's the next level to that question though.
The window installs one thing,
but really the caulking part to really get that window caked in with the beautiful straight,
perfect line of Caulk.
That's not splat,
that stuff's hard to work with.
It's not easy to work with.
No,
I go to so many homes.
I see.
There's ca,
all over the bricks and like,
it's crazy.
My guys are just,
I call them the Da Vinci's of their trade is what I call them because they can run a ca beat man.
And it's,
it's really astounding to see that final product.
So,
leave it to pros.
Yep.
There's something called the 10,000 hour rule.
And when you put 10,000 hours into anything,
you become an expert and do it yourself first,
who've never put windows in shouldn't even think of it.
So,
thank you very much for answering that question.
I figured you would be going down that path.
Lyndal.
Thank you,
my friend.
Thanks for it.
It,
it's,
it's funny that it has to be answered,
but yes,
thank you for allowing me the opportunity to these questions come up I figured out,
but I want you to do it.
Um,

Podcast Episode Transcript:
It would be really strange if our homes didn't have windows.
Um I'll tell you an upside though.
If we lived in the earth,
like in the earth,
not on the earth,
it would be a lot easier to control the temperature in our home.
We wouldn't even need H VAC systems.
We would just be perfect.
However,
that's not the way we live.
Uh We live above ground,
which is great.
We have windows in our home.
So I wanna talk about windows today on the program.
So I asked my friend Lyndol Woodruff to join me here from Woodruff Windows.
How you doing,
buddy?
Wonderful.
How about yourself?
Live in the dream.
My friend live in the dream.
Hey,
a question has come in here to the studio and this question has come up over the years and I think it's a fair question about windows when people get their windows replaced,
let's say it's a decent size home and there's 30 windows,
which that happens all the time.
30 windows is a,
is a rough number.
Do they have to replace all the windows at once or can it be done in stages?
Maybe just do the front or the back,
well,
from an efficiency standpoint to get the maximum benefits.
Absolutely all at once,
for sure.
Yeah,
because to get,
you know?
Yeah,
because you don't want it to be efficient on one side and not the other.
Also,
if you're gonna get a home improvement done,
we do it all at once.
So,
if you're gonna get your kitchen done,
you don't get half the kitchen done.
Like the old countertops on that side of the kitchen,
but we'll put new countertops here.
Oh,
the fridge is on this side.
So we'll get a new fridge,
but we'll leave the stove,
which is on the other side.
No,
do it all at once.
It,
it just makes more sense to get everything done because when you're out there doing the work and I know you guys are very conscientious and you do a great job.
You really don't want the crew to come back out again.
Right?
Because it's a little inconvenient to have your windows replaced.
It's definitely more cost effective for sure to do it all at the same time.
You know,
I mean,
windows is an investment naturally.
Some people want to know.
Well,
I want,
I need to split it up up for cost sake.
We've got a great financing partner that has amazing terms as far as,
you know,
0% for 18 months with no minimum monthly payment required.
So I have some people,
they'll finance it and they won't even pay a payment for 10 months.
As long as it's paid off within 18 months,
you have no interest.
So some people get a few more bonuses at work before they even make a payment.
You know.
So why not use somebody else's money to get it done now?
Because that's gonna be the maximum benefit to your home.
You're,
you're gonna see a great drop in your bills immediately.
That's the great thing about windows.
You don't have to wait for the R O I,
you know,
the moment you get them all switched out,
it already starts performing.
So,
um I highly recommend and of course,
it's more cost effective to do it all at the same time because we're not making multiple trips and,
you know,
it's one pickup from the factory and we come and bring all the windows to the property and stay until it's done,
you know.
So we price in it a little bit different from one shot as opposed to phases.
So,
yeah.
No,
absolutely.
It just makes a whole lot of sense.
Um And you're right,
the,
the,
um,
the R O I is gonna happen real quick.
Uh It doesn't matter if it's summer or winter,
the air conditioning and heating system is gonna feel it immediately.
And also it's not just saving money on the actual energy cost,
it's going to allow your H VAC system to last longer because it's not running as hard and you're gonna be more comfortable.
So on those really,
really hot days that we get here in Texas,
it's not gonna be as hot anymore.
Regardless of how hard your air conditioning system works.
If you have substandard windows,
you're gonna be miserable.
I had a lady put a Google Review the other day.
That was astounded because her laundry room used to be smoldering.
It was always in the direct beam of sunlight and her Google review literally said it was so strange to stand in my laundry room and be in a direct beam of sun and feel no temperature change.
That's incredible.
I mean,
that's,
yeah,
it's really astounding,
you know,
I mean,
whatever you set that thermostat to your home is gonna heat or cool to that temperature much faster because you're not losing that air and then it's your HVAC system just cuts off and it can take a much longer nap before it has to readjust your home temperature.
Just keeps everything a lot more level.
So it's,
it's really neat.
Yeah,
Lyndol,
thank you so much for joining me today on the program.
I appreciate all of Lyndon's information from Woodruff is located in the description of this podcast.

buddy.
I appreciate it.
Thank you.

See you later.
"So that U V coating or that low E coating that's in between the panes of glass is just mind boggling how amazing it works and how thick those glass panes are and all of the argon gas that's in between those panes of glass to not allow heat and cold to penetrate through the glass."

Podcast Episode Transcript:
A lot of us don't think a lot about windows in our home,
but it's critical,
especially if you live in an area like D F W.
Um,
it's hot in the summer,
cool and sometimes cold in the winter time.
And windows can be a huge breach in the winter.
That cold air wants to infiltrate and unfortunately in the summer,
that warmer air wants to come in and it is harder for your H VAC system in both seasons to keep up.
So a lot of people think I just need a new air conditioning system.
I need more insulation.
Um You may want to consider new windows.
So I've asked Lyndol Woodruff to join me here from Woodruff Windows.
Hey,
Lyndol,
how are you doing?
What's up?
Awesome,
Joe,
how are you,
buddy?
I'm living a dream.
Thank you so much for asking for pro Joe.
Good to be here,
man.
Thanks for coming on the program.
And so a question has come up and that is how often does the average homeowner have to replace windows?
Well,
if you do it right.
Um and you get a good quality window with a good quality install,
you don't ever have to do it again.
That's the cool part about it.
The goal really,
it,
it kind of starts happening about the 15 year old mark.
Once the home hits about 15 years,
there's been quite a bit of settling going on and breathing in that foundation.
And if you have those,
if you have a,
a brick,
we'll just say a brick home,
for example.
And you have those regular metal framed builder grade windows with just regular clear glass.
Probably you got grids,
the little tick tech tow bars in the glass because that was the thing will never,
you know,
they were built if that's your situation.
Um Those windows are really causing a lot of problems in your home.
And so we can,
we can talk about those details later.
But really when you get that old window out and you get a good energy efficient window in vinyl frame is good enough for Texas.
Uh there's other options for frames,
but because of our region and the way the weather is here,
um vinyl is a great choice and it's a much lower on the price point scale than some of the other windows.
So really,
you just need a good vinyl frame,
energy efficient window.
And uh the one that we use the glass is the absolute best,
the the seal in the glass unit is the absolute best.
So you're not gonna have to worry about ever messing with your windows.
Again,
once you do it right the first time and you'll just get all the benefits for years and years to come of uh you know,
comfort and energy savings and extra longevity on your whole H VAC system.
There's just so many things.
So one and done Joe one and done.
Is it fair to say that we've come a long way with technology?
It wasn't,
but the late 90s,
maybe even early two thousands single pane windows were still being installed by builders.
Now,
you can get up to a triple pain window.
You can get all kinds of gas in there.
That,
that's better than the old gas.
But if you had a single pain,
there was no gas seals weren't as good.
So we've gotten to a point,
I think,
and I think this is true of automobiles and airplanes,
a lot of things that we do get better,
but not at the same rate.
Mhm.
So the,
yeah,
the,
the science and the technology behind the insulated glass units these days is,
is pretty mind boggling.
Um,
not all insulated glass units are created equal guys.
There's,
there's,
uh,
one,
the one that manufactures,
the one that we use in the windows,
uh,
cardinal insulated glass unit hands down the very best that there is.
And the science that goes into developing the,
the low e the low emissivity coating that's between the glass that blocks out all the U V rays.
So,
if you think about it in uh in terms of,
you know,
sunglasses,
cheap sunglasses or polarized ray bands,
right?
You know,
cheap sunglasses,
lets in all the U V rays harmful for your retina,
polarize blocks it all out,
same kind of concept for your home.
So that blocks out all those harmful U V rays which you know,
penetrating into the home fades,
furniture fades,
artwork,
it fades carpet,
it fades,
flooring,
it fades the walls,
all that stuff because those U V rays are harmful.
So that U V coating or that low E coating that's in between the pans of glass is just mind boggling how amazing it works and how thick those glass panes are and all of the argon gas that's in between those panes of glass to Not allow heat and cold to penetrate through the glass.
I mean,
it could be 150° outside and your inside pain is gonna be room temperature.
It's pretty astounding how the energy efficiency of that works.
So,
and on the cold level too,
it could be 4° outside.
Your inside pain is gonna be about room temperature.
It's extremely mind blowing.
That's one of my favorite things.
I'm a nerd.
I'm a science nerd.
I had the bookshelf growing up when I was eight,
you know,
children's book of questions and answers how the universe works.
Yada yada yada.
I was like,
wow,
cool stuff because my grandfather was like an inventor and engineer and you know,
whatever.
So that's why I fell in love with it because the glass is amazing and the benefits are just crazy.
So that's a kind of a,
a long-winded answer to your question.
Yeah.
Well,
Lyndol,
thanks.
All of his information is located in the description of this podcast.
He'd be more than happy to discuss this with you out at your home while you consider getting new windows.
Lyndol.

Yeah.
Woodruff Windows.
Um So generally when I have a new guest on the program,
I like to ask what your,
why is I know your family,
I know your backstory,
the family history.
It's really interesting too how it all began and what's been going on for decades.
Now,
why do you tell everybody a little bit about you and what your why is,
well,
I will,
I will say first off,
this is awesome.
Thank you Joe for having me on here and,
and uh giving us a,
a cooler chance to be able to share our story and what our our passion is really.
And you know,
a a long time ago,
my grandfather was in the construction business and in the early eighties,
my dad uh got some,
some new windows put on our house and some siding and he was just really blown away at the,
at the difference these windows made,
especially in our dining room or,
and like breakfast nook area and the bay window area,
there's always drafts coming through.
We all had to sit in robes and stuff during the winter to have breakfast together because the,
the frost is like coming right through the windows.
So it really started with that once he got that done on our house and the difference that it made,
it made our home more comfortable.
Uh It made having breakfast together more comfortable.
We were at ease,
you know.
So he just got the idea,
I would love to have this as a little business myself,
uh,
and help other homeowners achieve the same level of comfort because when that weather is penetrating through the windows or the seals or whatever,
it may be,
it just creates a constant like suction loop throughout the house and your,
your HVAC system just stays running to try to keep up with that temperature setting that you have on your thermostat and it breaks down faster.
Your bills are,
you know,
that's one of the reasons that the bills are so high.
So the window side of things is such a huge component to helping the homeowner not only save money but making their homes more comfortable for their family and also the whole.
So that's really our why is where it kind of started,
you know,
to really,
really help homeowners,
um create a more comfortable living environment so they can uh appreciate the time together more because you're not going to Like or,
or it's so hot,
you can just be comfortable and chill.
So that's where the,
where the idea was born in 82 to start 1982 to start the business.
And here we are all these years later and uh you know,
me and my sister and my dad were running it and got some of the same installers that have been with us since 1985 and they just do great work.
So,
and I know back in 82 you would lead the crews out there in your diapers.
Oh,
no.
So um yeah,
so through the dirt,
listen,
here guys started,
started before you,
you were doing anything and,
and that's the heritage of the company.
Um I've met your father and um he's,
he's a great guy.
Uh You guys have a great family business and some team members that have been around as if they are like cousins and uncles.
Absolutely.
It,
it's all,
it's all a family ordeal because you know,
one of those,
one of those installers who's been with us since 1985,
you know,
fast forward to now the crew is him,
his two sons,
his grandson and they're just wonderful and all they do is windows,
they don't do anything else.
They're window specialists.
So because of my Granddad's background and my dad kind of working with him when he was a kid.
My granddad was very picky.
So as far as how the work's done,
no,
no cutting corners do it right.
The first time perf perfection if we can get it,
you know,
like very,
very,
very picky.
So,
you know,
from the early days my,
my dad sought out people that had that same value system.
Um And that's the only people that we work with,
but our other crew,
uh that's led by Larry.
It's him and his stepson and they've been with us since 97 they've got another young man that just joined them probably about six months ago.
Uh We added him to the team and he's become like my nephew,
you know,
I mean,
just a great,
great kid,
great work ethic shows up with a smile and they love what they do.
All of them and that's all they do is windows.
You know,
we don't have these guys that are a little bit of this.
A little bit of that.
I gotta go over here and do some dry wall.
No,
no,
no,
they are windows specialists.
And I think that's one of the main things that really kind of sets us apart.
It's,
it's all family related.
We,
we all have each other's best interests in mind.
Um You know,
so now that we're growing the company a little bit,
I'm looking at,
you know,
financial planning stuff for them,
investment stuff for them.
What are their long term goals as a family?
How can we help them achieve those,
you know,
just outside of the helping other families,
but all of us continue to help each other grow.
So it's a really cool dynamic when we all show up at the property to check on the guys working,
see if they need anything,
bring them food,
you know,
whatever it may be.
So yeah,
and,
and as you know,
as a business owner,
you have two customers,
you have the homeowner and you got your internal customers,
which are your team members.
And if your team members are taken care of and you're,
you know,
they're doing well,
then ultimately the end user of the Windows,
the homeowner is gonna be taken care of.
Love your story.
Thank you so much.
