In Revelation 3, Jesus speaks to the church at Sardis, a church with a reputation for being alive but a very different spiritual reality. Pastor Grant challenges us to look beyond appearances, wake up from spiritual complacency, and remain committed to both the Word of God and the Spirit of God. God is not finished working, and He has MORE He wants to do in His church and in our lives.

The letter to the church at Thyatira shows that Jesus sees both the good works and the hidden sins of His church. Although the believers at Thyatira were growing in love, faith, service, and perseverance, they tolerated false teaching and sexual immorality. Jesus calls His church to repent, reject compromise, and live distinctly as salt and light rather than becoming indistinguishable from the surrounding culture. The letter to the church in Smyrna shows how Jesus calls believers to remain faithful even when following Him becomes costly. Jesus reminds the suffering church that He is “the First and the Last,” who died and rose again, assuring them that He understands suffering and has power over death. Although Smyrna was poor, persecuted, and under intense pressure, Jesus declared that they were truly rich because He valued eternal faithfulness over earthly wealth and success. Jesus did not promise that their suffering would disappear; instead, He told them not to fear, explaining that their trials were limited and ultimately under His authority. He called them to be faithful unto death, promising them the “crown of life,” a victor’s wreath representing eternal reward. The examples of Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Esther, Stephen, and later Polycarp demonstrate that genuine faithfulness means choosing Christ regardless of the outcome.
