What if we could detect and treat cancer at a much earlier stage than is currently the case? What if we could cure cancer through this revolution in detection? What if we could find cancer before it finds us? In this episode I am speaking with Dr. Azra Raza who is medical doctor and oncologist specialising in Acute Myeloid Leukemia or AML and a preleukemic condition known as myelodysplastic syndromes or MDS she is also the author of The First Cell and the Human Costs of Pursuing Cancer to the Last and we discuss the future of cancer care where the methods of detection and treatment have changed very little over the last 40 years but the future is ripe for revolution. More about Dr. Azra Raza: Dr. Azra Raza is the Chan Soon-Shiong Professor of Medicine and Director of the MDS Center at Columbia University in New York. Dr. Raza completed her medical education in Pakistan, training in Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland, Franklin Square Hospital, and Georgetown/VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and completed her fellowship in Medical Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. She started her research in Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) in 1982 and moved to Rush University, Chicago, Illinois in 1992, where she was the Charles Arthur Weaver Professor in Oncology and Director, Division of Myeloid Diseases. The MDS program, along with a Tissue Repository containing more than 60,000 samples from MDS and acute leukemia patients was successfully relocated to Columbia University in 2010. Before moving to New York, Dr. Raza was the Chief of Hematology-Oncology and the Gladys Smith Martin Professor of Oncology at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. She has published the results of her laboratory research and clinical trials in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, Blood, Cell, Cancer Cell, PNAS, Cancer, Cancer Research, British Journal of Hematology, Leukemia, Leukemia Research. She is also the co-author of GHALIB: Epistemologies of Elegance, a book on the works of the famous Urdu poet. What happens when you put people before profit in your business? What if we could put people first in society too? In this interview, I speak with Howard Behar about the servant leadership model, and how putting people first and prioritising their development is the key to building a great business. We also discuss how standing up and speaking up about what we believe in could lead us all back to a more humanitarian society. Howard Behar's career in business spans over 50 years, all in consumer oriented businesses covering several industries. He retired from Starbucks Coffee after 21 years where he led both the domestic business, as President of North America, and was the founding President of Starbucks International. During his tenure, he participated in the growth of the company from 28 stores to over 15,000 stores spanning five continents. He served on the Starbucks Board of Directors for 12 years before retiring. Mr. Behar is currently a Trustee for the Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation and is on the advisory board of Anthos Capital. He formerly severed as a board member for: Starbucks, GAP, Shurgard, University of Washington Foundation and IDTech to name a few.
