In recent years, the term "agile" has become synonymous with fast-paced and adaptable organizations, but there is a growing debate about the true definition of an agile organization. The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) has been exploring the differences between "nimble" and "agile" in order to better understand the role of business analysis in these types of organizations. According to Keith Ellis, the word "nimble" in English has two meanings. One meaning is more about "skill and precision, lightness of movement," and the other is "quickness of mind." On the other hand, the term "agile" tends to mean "changing direction quickly," but it is also a specific methodology in software development. The difference between nimble and agile lies in the purpose and capabilities of the organization. While "agile" is a specific methodology for doing work, "nimble" is about the underlying capability to sense and respond to change quickly. An organization can implement agile methodologies, but this doesn't guarantee that the organization will be nimble. According to Ellis, the role of business analysis in an agile organization is to bring 8 practices to the center of the organization that will enable it to be nimble. These practices focus on understanding the root cause of problems, creating change readiness, and implementing solutions that are valuable to the organization in a quick and effective manner. In conclusion, while "agile" and "nimble" are often used interchangeably, they refer to different aspects of an organization. Agile is a specific methodology for doing work, while nimble refers to the capability of an organization to sense and respond to change quickly. The role of business analysis in an agile organization is to bring practices to the center that will enable it to be nimble. In this interview, expert Kathy Berkidge shares her insights on the benefits of mindfulness for business analysts. By practicing mindfulness, business analysts can improve their focus, increase their creativity, and make better decisions in their work. Listen to Kathy as she explains how incorporating mindfulness into the workday can lead to a more productive and fulfilling career. Mindfulness is a skill that can be learned and improved with practice. It involves being aware of what's happening inside one's mind, such as thoughts, assumptions, and judgments, and being able to step back and observe these without being influenced by them. This inner awareness can help business analysts stay curious, remain open-minded, and avoid making assumptions that could cloud their understanding of a situation. Additionally, mindfulness also involves outer awareness, where one is conscious of what's happening in the environment, including with stakeholders and during meetings. By being mindful and avoiding being influenced by perceptions and judgments, a business analyst can be more objective, neutral, and better equipped to understand the root of problems.
