The hosts welcome Kathy Hoback, the disability support services coordinator at Metropolitan Community College, to talk about ways to help children with disabilities and special needs in the education system. A disability is anything that affects one or more major life functions, including learning.
One of the best things parents who have children with special needs can do when navigating their education is to be proactive. That looks different depending on the age and whether a student is in the public education system or is homeschooled. Either way, the sooner parents notice their child has special needs and seek testing or answers, the better. Once the parents and the child have a diagnosis, they can start finding ways to support the student with special needs in the classroom.
Some modifications or accommodations a child with special needs might include:
A longer test
More time to read a book or work on an assignment
A quiet room to work on assignments or projects
Some of these modifications aren’t possible at the college level. That’s why it’s important for parents who have children with special needs to prepare their students for college. Kathy says around the time a child is 14 to 16 years old, they need to start what’s called the “transition of rights.” That means the child starts understanding their own disability and taking charge of their education so they can be their own advocate. This helps the student with special needs gain their own autonomy. Knowing what their diagnosis is and how they learn best will help them pursue help and advocate for themselves in college or post-high school education.
Kathy wanted every parent who has a child with special needs to know, everything is going to be okay. The earlier they reach out to a professional for help, the better for their child’s education.

The Hildebrands welcome Paytn Schumer, the Student Ministry Director at Abundant Life, and Meg Gasper, the Children’s Event Coordinator at Abundant Life, to talk about the importance of summer camp.
The hosts talked about how summer camp changed their lives. Jen was saved at a Vacation Bible School event as a child, and she learned to really follow God and grew a relationship with Him at summer camp. That camp is also where she met Bill, so it has a special place in their hearts. Bill spoke about how it was his favorite place to be, and he never wanted to leave.
Paytn and Meg talked about how summer camp is an opportunity for children to grow in their relationship with God through music, friendships, sermons, Bible study, and more. Students get to build relationships with like-minded peers and mentors while they are away from home. They also learn how to follow Jesus in a safe and fun environment, and are equipped with the tools to keep learning once they get home.
Sending your child to summer camp removes the distractions of a routine, social media, and technology. At summer camp, your child gets to have fun while also learning more about God’s character. They get to fully focus on God, the Bible, and His people.
The Hildebrands described summer camp as another tool in the toolbox for parents to help their children grow spiritually.
Abundant Life has summer camp options for middle to high school students called ONEWEEK, along with a summer camp for elementary-age children.

Roger Sprouse, a financial advisor, joins the Hildebrands to discuss financial planning for families. Roger has been working in the financial sector for 30 years, and he shares with the Hildebrands how he and his wife prepared their children financially for the world.
Some of the ways Roger says he and his wife financially planned for their family were:
Always making it a focus to go to a good, wise church
Having open communication with your children
Make giving to the Lord a priority
Roger spoke about the importance of the 10-10-80 rule when financially planning for families. Ten percent of your income first goes to the Lord, the next ten percent goes toward your savings, and you live off the 80% that’s left.
The hosts and Roger say that the rule helps families plan for the future, especially when it comes to living debt-free. Families should aim to live without debt because it allows them to do so many things, like give more to the church. The Hildebrands chimed in with their story of being missionaries in Africa and talked about how they couldn’t serve as missionaries until they became debt free as a family.

Dr. Cary Corely, a family counselor, joins the Hildebrands to discuss helpful ways parents should respond when their child says they are struggling with same-sex attraction.
Dr. Corely discussed the importance of not saying or doing anything definitive in that conversation about same-sex attraction. He encouraged parents to take time to think and process while still expressing love for the child. This gave the Holy Spirit the time to help the parents understand how He wanted them to respond.
When parents are able to process, Dr. Corely highlights places they should turn:
Prayer
Bible (specifically the book of Romans)
The Hildebrands mentioned how it might be easy for parents to ask themselves, “What did I do wrong?” Dr. Corely said several factors that come into play when it comes to same-sex attraction. There are many families where the children struggle with same sex attraction, and it has nothing to do with what the parents did or did not do.
The hosts want to remind parents the importance of making a difference with our kids by love and support while also not sacrificing our own beliefs.

The Hildebrands welcome Carolyn Asher, a counselor at Abundant Life, to discuss children’s grief and loss and ways for parents to help them through that process.
Jen shared about losing her brother after a long battle with cancer. She asked Carolyn about the ways to help her children grieve the loss of their uncle. Carolyn says it’s just as important for parents to learn how to grieve so they can help with their children’s grief and loss.
She outlined the five stages of grief:
Denial
Anger
Bargaining
Depression
Acceptance
Going through the stages of grief and loss is difficult. Each person goes through a stage in their own time. Parents wanting to help their children’s grief and loss need to model behavior. An example of that can be showing how they lean on God during the process.
Another way parents can help their children’s grief and loss is by asking their kids what they are feeling. Parents can empathize with their children too. Sharing their feelings during the difficult time can show a child it’s okay for them to be struggling too.

Les Norman, a former Kansas City Royals player and host of the radio show, “Breakin’ the Norm,” joins the hosts to talk about parenting and sports.
Les talked about how when he was growing up, sports were an escape. He wanted to be part of something that was joyful and happy instead of the fighting and abuse he saw at home.
When he was married, he talked with his wife about parenting their children while he was an MLB player. Les knew he didn’t want to raise his children while on the road. He retired from professional baseball before his two boys were born. As they navigated parenting and sports, Les decided to coach his kids’ teams.
Les shared some of the ways parents can help sports and faith intersect. Sports can help teach kids biblical characteristics like:
Character
Teamwork
Respect
Perseverance
Before putting a child into a youth league, Les said every parent needs to ask themselves why. It cannot be motivated by an unfulfilled dream of yours or a need to pay for college when they’re older. Encouraging your children to participate in sports can be a healthy parenting tool, but parents must check their motives.
Les also highlighted the importance of balance for parents raising children who are playing sports. Not every moment, especially when they’re young, needs to be about the game or the team. Children are children at the end of the day, and they need time and space to be kids!
Join Les as he shares how to honor the Lord while navigating parenting and sports.

Matt and Jocelyn Kepner joined the hosts to talk about the importance of fostering and adopting. They talk about Matt’s difficult upbringing. He bounced around houses from the time he was 15 years old until he was an adult. When Matt married Jocelyn, he was worried about being a good father because he didn’t have any good examples while growing up. Jocelyn brought up fostering. They prayed about it, seeking guidance on making such a large commitment and if it would be right for their family. Later on, they felt God calling them to it.
Jocelyn explains the purpose of fostering and how it’s different from adoption. Fostering provides children who came from abusive or neglectful homes with a safe place to stay while their parents go through programs to prove to the government that they are fit to take care of their children again. The ultimate goal of fostering is to reunify the children with their parents.
In seven years, the Kepners have fostered 29 children. Fostering and adopting can be very rewarding. It requires a lot of patience, compassion and leaning on God. The Kepners say there are important questions every couple or family should ask before fostering or adopting.
How is my relationship with God?
How will this impact my family dynamic?
Do I have a good support system?
Abundant Life has resources for foster and adoptive families, which you can find that at https://livingproof.co/get-involved/family/foster-and-adoption/

Toshaun Avery, the Student Pastor at Abundant Life joins the hosts to talk about dealing with family conflict, especially for families with teenagers. Toshaun encourages parents to remember relationships are the foundation. He says they need to be honest with themselves about where they’ve invested in their child’s life and if they really know their teen.
Toshaun says when handling family conflict, parents should answer the following questions for themselves:
What do you want them to know when addressing conflict?
What do you want them to do after this conversation?
What do you want to accomplish by having this conversation?
What do you want them to feel?
The hosts remembered while they were raising their sons how important it was to ask questions. Seeking to understand where their children were when handling family conflict helped the parents see another perspective. The hosts and Toshaun also highlighted the importance of timing the conversation for when the child might be more receptive to it. Knowing if your child has had a bad day can make the conversation not go as well as parents dealing with family conflict might hope.
Toshaun and the hosts also discussed some resources for parents while raising their children and dealing with family conflict.
One of these was Abundant Life’s Counseling Center. You can find out more here: https://livingproof.co/resources/abundant-life-counseling-center/

The hosts sit down with Dr. Jeff Cox, the Executive Pastor of Missions and Counseling at Abundant Life, to talk about anxiety’s impact on parenting.
Dr. Cox says social media is behind one of the shifts he’s seeing in counseling children. A few years ago, depression was the biggest issue children were facing. Now, it’s anxiety. One of the biggest drivers of anxiety is social media. Social media drives comparison, which is the thief of joy and where anxiety thrives. Forty years ago, parents didn’t need to worry about social media. Now, it is creating anxiety in both parents and kids.
Children will model their behavior after those closest to them, especially their parents. If the parent is always anxious, the child will learn to see the world that way too. Combating anxiety’s impact on parenting can look like soothing your body. That means parents slowing down, playing with their children, connecting to God’s Word and His Creation by spending time outdoors.
Dr. Cox also talked about the importance of developing a healthy, secure attachment style with your child. This happens in the first five to seven years of life. Ways parents can combat an anxious attachment style with their children is to focus on:
Delighting in them
Listening to them and being present in conversations
Teaching them to think highly of themselves and believe that God made them.

The hosts welcome Brandon and Susan Fields, members of Abundant Life, who are raising three young boys. The Fields talk about their journey to becoming parents and the choices they have made to raise their children God’s way.
Before having children, the Fields were both pharmacists, working 40 hours a week, living in what they thought was their dream home. After having their first son, they both felt compelled to make changes, like downsizing their home, so they could focus more on parenting.
They shared some of the parenting tools they have learned in a resource at Abundant Life. The course is called, “Growing Kids God’s Way.” All of the parenting tools in the course focus on helping parents raise their children to know and love the Lord. Some of these parenting tools include:
The interrupt courtesy
Verbal response after instruction
Setting boundaries to limit busy-ness
Having the right parenting tools is vital in raising children who know and have a relationship with God. Join us here weekly to learn more parenting tools and strategies to help your family succeed!

The hosts welcome back Josh and Dixie Paul. They are members of Abundant Life, who’ve raised two kids while Josh worked in the Navy as a psychiatrist. They continued their conversation about dealing with family trauma and how it can impact relationships.
Josh compared dealing with family trauma to swimming upstream. It’s going to be hard, tough and exhausting at times, but it’s going to be worth it in the end.
Dixie talked about how her family trauma affected her husband and kids. It led to her kids being insecure and anxious about meeting new people or letting people in. When she decided to work on healing from her past family trauma, she learned ways to help her kids process things as well.
Josh and Dixie talk about the path to finding hope through family trauma through tools like:
Seeking professional help
Communicating openly with a trusted family member or spouse
Talking to safe, appropriate people about your past
Leaning into the promises of the Lord
The hosts touched on how important it is to take time to address family trauma, work on healing past hurts, and lean on other people during the process.

Josh and Dixie Paul, members of Abundant Life, have raised two boys while Josh worked in the Navy as a psychiatrist. They join the hosts to talk about their past and the impact of family trauma on relationships. how trauma can impact families.
In Josh’s work as a psychiatrist, he works with people dealing with PTSD and trauma. He says everyone’s response to trauma is personal. What might feel huge to one person might not be a problem for another. The Hildebrands share their experiences with family trauma and said they have experience with that. They remembered recall how certain moments while they were raising their four boys were scary for one of them and not for the other.
Dixie shared her family trauma from when she was growing up and how that trauma affected her as a woman, wife, and mother. She talked about how the Lord helped her find joy and healing.
Josh said the real turning point for Dixie in her journey with family trauma was the moment she chose forgiveness over bitterness. The hosts, Josh and Dixie will discuss more on how trauma affects our families next week.

Chad and Chelsea Glover are raising three girls- two are in middle school, and the youngest one is in second grade. Chad is the Executive Teaching Pastor at Abundant Life and the Crossroads campus pastor. They join the hosts to talk about the importance of intentional parenting.
They share resources through Abundant Life while also giving book recommendations. They encourage listeners that great parenting takes intention. The key is having a map that informs you and validates that you are going in the right direction.
One of these maps Chad talks about is the “WIN” of family ministry and parenting. The acronym stands for:
W: walk the path
I: initiate faith conversations
N: never miss a God moment
Chad talks about the vital time when children are preparing for school, and the work parents must do to intentionally teach them that their identity is rooted in Christ. Chelsea shares about the time she intentionally puts aside to ensure her children know who God says they are. Chad also touches on the importance of each spouse recognizing and valuing the intentional parenting the other is doing at home.
Intentional parenting takes time, but it is so worth it! Discover practical tools to help you build a family that lasts through intentional parenting.

Kelsey Knutson-Leedy, the Special Needs Coordinator at Abundant Life, is raising a child with special needs. She joins the hosts to share her experience and the lessons she’s learned through special needs parenting.
Kelsey talks about the resources she’s using to raise her stepson. She says the key is to have a strong community around while parenting a child with special needs. Being able to celebrate “wins” with parents who get it is really important in special needs parenting.
Bill mentioned how some mile markers parents have might look different for families with special needs, including:
Preparing for child and parent dedication
Preparing for school
Salvation
Rite of passage
Preparing for adulthood
Kelsey shared the wisdom that raising your child with special needs might look different, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important or working. Sharing the Gospel with them might not be as traditional as with other children, but figuring out ways to help them learn about Jesus through their interests is the best approach.

After raising three girls to adulthood, Todd and Angela have much wisdom to share on helping girls mature into women. They join the hosts to talk about celebrating a girl’s rite of passage.
Angela shares about the resources she used to raise her girls. She encourages listeners to do what best fits their family when it comes to a girl’s rite of passage. The key is to be intentional about the way you do it!
Girls need their parents to be present when they are processing emotions and changes. Angela shares about the conversations and special parts of the rite of passage celebrations she did with each of her daughters.
Todd gives dads tips on how they can play active roles in their daughters’ lives, including…
Inviting them into his activities
Taking them on daddy-daughter dates
Listening and being present when they are talking
Letting them see him treat his wife with care and respect
Other people will try to define girls as they mature into womanhood. A girl’s rite of passage should always include elements that remind them of who they are in Christ. The most important thing you can pass on to your daughter is God’s truth!

In this episode of the Abundant Life Family podcast, hosts Bill and Jen Hildebrand are joined by Drew Davis, the director of Equipped Outdoors.
Drew and his wife, Charissa, use Equipped Outdoors as a ministry to introduce families to God’s creation in the outdoors. They believe that while objects and gifts come and go, experiences can last for a lifetime.
We only have a short period of time with our kids. How can you create family experiences with your kids so you can be their primary source of influence, development, and growth?
Drew shares some valuable tips on navigating family experiences with kids who aren’t super excited and on dealing with unexpected obstacles that pop up. He encourages parents to be on the same page about the family experiences and activities they are doing to make it enjoyable for everyone.
He and the hosts all agree that their kids will carry the memories of family experiences with them once they leave the house. The time to start building those memories is now!

Join Bill and Jen Hildebrand as they continue their conversation with Scott and Lori Ridings about building a blended family.
Scott and Lori share some important lessons they learned while blending their families. They were intentional with the language they used to talk about their family, which allowed them to build trust with their kids.
Scott and Lori share how they worked to connect with their kids by making time and space for conversations when the kids were ready. They share stories about disciplining their kids and navigating tough conversations.
They encouraged couples to be unified, loyal, consistent, and forgiving while navigating parenting as a team. Forgiveness must be a part of your marriage if you want to look like Christ, but that requires humility. The enemy wants to keep you and your spouse isolated in your struggles as a couple and family. But you can overcome him by reaching out and asking for help!
