It's election day, so ML and political commentator Michael Griffie make some bold predictions for you to evaluate long after the dust settles. Then Shawn makes the scene and he and Marc discuss how a potential tragedy at the Lions game brought both sides together.STRAIGHT DOPEML sees gas for less than $4 a gallon on his way to the studio and wonders whether Iran is doing it to another American president: They released the hostages too late to help President Carter, and now gas is dropping too late to help President Trump.Former congressional candidate and occasional Detroit Free Press opinion columnist Michael Griffie says he's 0-for-3 on major political predictions, but nevertheless says he believes Democrat Abdul El-Sayed will lose to Republican Mike Rogers in the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Gary Peters. He explains why.ML's big prediction is that, whoever wins, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield will be a big loser. Listen and learn his logic.Get the bell ready! ML looks back on how Kwame Kilpatrick almost destroyed Jennifer Granholm's gubernatorial hopes -- and probably helped Mike Cox get elected Attorney General.Marc also thinks El-Sayed will lose, but not because Democratic U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens abandoned him over the weekend and endorsed Rogers. He explains.Has anyone seen Mike Duggan? The crew discusses where the one-time independent candidate for governor has been since he dropped out -- and whether he could have helped pick the winner in the U.S. Senate race.ML makes a second bold prediction about voter turnout, speculating that more Michiganders will cast ballots this year than in 2024, a presidential election year, when turnout is typically higher.Journalism is the cure for politicians who bend the truth. But is the cure for a bent carrot worse than the affliction? With all the candidates crapping on each other, ML asked them to say one nice thing about their opponent. Read what they had to say here.Get Shawn's take on how Jack Campbell's injury also showed the human side of fierce combattants.Looking for a great gift for a friend, relative or even someone you don’t particularly like? Harry Houdini died in Detroit 100 years ago -- or did he? Keith Matheny of the Free Press discusses his deep dive into the magnificent magician's rise and death here on Halloween 1926. ML and Marc also welcome DCFC legend Stephen Carroll to discuss Le Rouge's upcoming playoff game -- and how you can get Stephen's tickets to the match.STRAIGHT DOPEHarry Houdini did his last show in Detroit, just days before he died at Grace Hospital under mysterious circumstances. Keith Matheny of the Free Press dug through old newspapers and spoke to historians about Houdini's rise and fall. Read all about it here.Houdini was a poor runaway before he started doing magic, but became a star because of his ability to gain publicity by performing stunts like getting out of every pair of handcuffs the Detroit police could find! He also performed a famous feat on the Belle Isle bridge, though it wasn't quite as harrowing as Hollywood made it out to be many years later.A trick Houdini performed in Detroit helped rescue a European tour that started out disastrously. Keith reveals how Houdini got Scotland Yard to help him become one of the biggest attractions in London.ML -- of course -- tries to make Houdini's death all about him. Listen to hear how he performs this magical feat.DCFC takes on Hartford Athletic on Friday, Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. Gates at Keyworth open early for wrestling, which ML says may (or may not) feature Marc and Shawn.Retired DCFC captain Stephen Carroll gives his take on the first round playoff match and what Le Rouge has to do to advance.Stephen reveals the identity of "The Mustache Man," but you don't have to know his name to win Stephen's tickets to the match. They will go to the first listener to send an email to [email protected] asking for them.Get your tickets to help pack the house at http://www.detcityfc.com Missed M.L.'s take on last week's U.S. Senate debate? Shawn Windsor is back and grouchier than ever while Marc is his ebullient self and ML tries -- and fails -- to talk about his recent debate coverage.STRAIGHT DOPEShawn muses about the fate of famous directors and actors who seem to have disappeared after dominating films for so many years. Among his favorites is Gene Hackman ... who ML noted has not made a movie since he died.Marc says he liked Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon," which ML hasn't seen, even though he liked the book. After hearing about Joe Buck's big bucks deal, ML wonders if any broadcaster is worth $30 million a year. Marc asks whether anyone has ever stopped watching a sporting event because of the broadcasters, then answers his own question by citing the ill-fated duo of Rick Rizz and Bob Rathbun.Shawn's reference to self-love prompts ML to mention his beloved Michigan State Spartan football team, which beat itself Saturday in a surprisingly competitive game with Northwestern.Meanwhile, in Ann Arbor, Marc was hanging with the Carr family when the Bryce Underwood Era may have ended for his beloved Michigan Wolverines in a surprisingly competitive game with Penn State. Marc wonders why everyone gets so mad about young guys making lots of money, reviving our regular debate about whether money is ruining college sports. (Spoiler alert: ML is outnumbered. Again.)Here's what Shawn had to say about what should happen next with Carr and Underwood.Missed M.L.'s takes on last week's debate? He tried to talk about it -- until Shawn interrupted -- and Marc could not coax him to spill. Instead, you'll have to catch up here.Looking for a great gift for a friend, relative or even someone you don’t particularly like? A Free Press subscription is a bargain! Erika Erickson is back -- dogging a controversial plastic surgeon and revealing how "Steve" ripped off a retired police sergeant. Then M.L. and Marc catch up on a potential serial killer in Lansing, and how the much-maligned mainstream media is still the best place to turn for justice when the authorities don't care.STRAIGHT DOPEDan Miller has been a great guest on the show, and ML and Erika had the pleasure of working with him at Fox 2, so we start with a tribute to Dan's wife Cindy, who died after a two-year battle with cancer. Dan and his family are hurting mightily, because that's how it feels when you love someone so much.Erika tracks down a plastic surgeon with a troubling track record in Illinois who has been operating in Michigan with equally troubling results. One patient told Erika she sought a breast reduction from an H-cup to a C- or D-cup, but ended up with much less -- AND what appeared to be the doctor's initials on her body. Check out Erika's report here.Tom Clark is an 82-year-old retired Holly cop who made a call for help with his new TV and ended up losing his life savings. Erika tells how he got most of the money back -- and how you can avoid falling victim to this scam. (Pro Tip: If someone asks you for gift cards, beware!!!) Watch Meet Tom here.ML was staying with a friend in Lansing who casually mentioned that THERE MAY BE A SERIAL KILLER NEARBY. The cops didn't seem to care, but ML's colleagues at the Lansing State Journal did. Here is the first in a series of stories that shed a light on this terrifying situation which is now making national headlines.Marc remembers Shelley Brooks, the serial killer who got caught after former Fox 2 Problem Solver Scott Lewis began reporting on a series of murders that prompted police to take a closer look at the cases.Missed M.L.'s takes on last week's debate? Catch up here.If you missed former Detroit Tigers beat writer Anthony Fenech on last week's show telling about a side of Justin Verlander you probably never saw, check out his book.Looking for a great gift for a friend, relative or even someone you don’t particularly like? Justin Verlander is a Detroit legend. A future Hall of Famer. One of the greatest pitchers ever to wear the Old English D.But there's another side to the story. And former Detroit Free Press Tigers beat writer Anthony Fenech is finally ready to tell it.STRAIGHT DOPE: In a revealing conversation with M.L. Elrick and Marc Fellhauer, Fenech opens up about his bitter feud with Verlander, the infamous clubhouse confrontation, and the superstar's public accusations that Fenech was an unethical journalist. Fenech says the fallout nearly destroyed his career, sent him into a personal tailspin, and left him questioning the newspaper that employed him. Now, after five years, he's fighting back with a new tell-all book, Off the Record.Nothing is off-limits: Verlander's temper, the Tigers' attempts to control the media, the ugly side of sports journalism, and how a couple of Jet's pizzas helped bring Fenech's Free Press career to a bizarre conclusion.Plus, Fenech pulls back the curtain on the Tigers' clubhouse, dishes on Miguel Cabrera and other Detroit stars, and explains how teams and agents manipulate the reporters who cover them. And there's more!GEEK OF THE WEEK: Christopher Ilitch earns Geek of the Week for his handling of the Red Wings' troubles and his preference for LinkedIn over facing angry fans. We also get into the controversial renaming of Comerica Park, the explosion of sports gambling, and millionaire athletes willing to endorse just about anything for another paycheck. It's baseball, big egos, corporate media, and a little Detroit dirty laundry.Because when the legend becomes bigger than the truth, somebody still has to tell the story.Only on ML's Soul of Detroit. Thanks to our supporters Pinnacle Wealth Strategies, Cadieux Café, Detroit City FC, and our SOULmates on Patreon.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/ml-soul-of-detroit--5780647/support.
