Don't let the laughter fool you. We are serious about bringing on Isaac Harvey MBE as a part of the Disability Tangent team! We may break down in tears from the joy we are experiencing in this conversation, but we also discuss the many adventures of Isaac, including his work as a content creator and video editor, his recent trip from Brighton to Paris with Wheels and Wheelchairs, and his upcoming plans for the LA Paralympics, which are admittedly not fully formed. But there's still time to create a plan for 2028. We have confidence he will be there and we will all be laughing in sunny California together. It is a lighthearted conversation, but Isaac is a force in the disability advocacy space, and we are thrilled to be chatting with him about so much on this episode! We dare you to watch it without cracking a smile. Let us know if you can. We will be amazed at your stoicism! Another Tangent hits the airwaves and this time Rocco and Christy are talking about "Fixing". What is it? What does it mean in the context of disability? How do we keep from making disabled people feel wrong, or broken? And what helps us find authentic, empowering community? Jump in to this topic with us as we stumble upon some wisdom--and a little chaos, and a little laughter, and a little weirdness. We look at some models of disability, some ways to address access needs, and some personal stories that tie in to it all. The second half of a fantastic conversation with Suzannah Weiss! We jump back in to chatting about neurodiversity and dating, relationships and sex. There is so much good content, and some hard content so trigger warnings, y'all. How to break out of societal boundaries, do we forgive people who have violated our boundaries, and what do we do when people don't seem to respect that we can't meet the expectations society sets for us. Lots of wisdom. Lots of laughs. Lots of concerns about when we will break for lunch. It is all in this episode! Grab a slice, and give it a listen! (Seriously, you'll be hungry by the end. We all were. Even the dog.)Part 2 of 2! Suzannah Weiss, author of Subjectified: Becoming a Sexual Subject joins us to talk about her book and so. much. more. In fact, we had so much to talk about that we are continuing the conversation in the next episode. We discuss some challenging topics, so a warning to those who might want to steer clear of this one or seek out supports, or listen with friends. Sex and neurodivergence start us off but that leads to stories and statistics of sexual coercion, assaults, and how we can begin to shape our own behaviors to stay safer and state needs. There is a lot to unpack about how disability diagnosis can lead to damaging situations. But we also have a lot of quirky fun as we dive into this subject matter! Christy loses her train of thought. Rocco takes us on a tangent. And Suzannah asks some really good questions of our hosts, turning the tangent tables on us! So get ready for a great time with the person we may just make our resident sexologist, and move her on into the studio (aka Christy's guest room) because we are smitten. (Christy is. Christy is smitten. Rocco is happily married, y'all.) Part 1 of 2! Accessibility at Will Rogers World Airport has seen some major changes in recent years and Stacey Hamm is here to tell us all about it! We chat about the Oklahoma City airports commitment to getting disability access right and how they are working toward this with the Hidden Disability Sunflower Lanyard Program and so much more. We also discover that Rocco is a wizard (as if you didn't know) and that Christy can loudly ramble on about unrelated tangential topics (as if you didn't know)! There is a lot to cover and Stacey is surprisingly good and answering questions that we have not yet even asked! So we cover it quickly! Dr. Deana Herrman, Professor, Physical Therapist, and Parent joins the discussion today and brings so much knowledge and perspective around how we speak. We talk about expertise, lived experience, extending our practice to include social determinants of health and so much more. Y'all Christy is still the loudest, but Deana is the fastest speaker we have had on the program and she is packing in the information like a Gilmore Girl on fire, so get ready. And speaking of loud, there may be yelling--be prepared for that as well. Apparently some passionate feels come out at the intersection of disability and healthcare! Who knew? But we're all friends, folx. No guests, or birds, were harmed in the making of this episode. A tangent full of tangents explores the topic of age and how it relates to disability. We touch on milestones, mobility aids, and making assumptions and the way these relate to ableism as Rocco and Christy jump into this discussion. Learn more about the hosts as they share a bit about their personal journeys with illness in youth and how that contributed to their views on disability today. And, of course, be ready for some wild and wacky side conversation, because we can't seem to get through an episode without it--the name of the podcast says it all, folks. Tangents Away! Round Two with Dr. Robin Arnall and Alexandra Elfers as we continue our discussions of autism, disability, power, passion, and how to be people through it all. You thought we touched on a lot last week? We were apparently just getting warmed up! There is so much more. And honestly, if we hadn't all run out of spoons (and perhaps also forks) we might have kept on talking for another two hours. This episode we hit on some controversies in the ABA community, how to be a good human, the challenge of masking--or not masking--as a neurodiverse human, and how consent has a complex history when it come to disability. Lots to unpack and we barely scratch the surface, but come along as we start to look at these issues in our second hour of conversation. This week we invite Dr. Robin Arnall, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LBA, and Alexandra Vassar, MS, BCBA, COBA, NCLBA into the room for a massive discussion. Well, not the literal room because we all want virtual work as an accommodation. Robin and Alexandra join us to discuss work in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis and the controversies over power, control, systems, and consent that come along with being neurodivergent in this space. There are numerous tangents, a few sensitive subjects, lots of laughs, and even some tears. This week we hit all of the contentious topics in tangent form! Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the so-called Woke Agenda, the ways that disability intersects, and how politics, race, poverty, and even being "pretty" shape our worlds are discussed. And in true Disability Tangent form we also talk about Christy's witchy ways, Rocco's drinking habits, philosophy, distraction, and imaginary ways to shop that should totally exist! Things get a bit wild and possibly overwhelming, but we hope there is also a little bit to learn and to consider. Buckle up, and thanks for joining us on the journey! The women behind the scenes get pulled in front of the camera--if the camera were working properly, but it isn't. Why technology challenged humans are trying to host a podcast is a question we do not answer but we have many answers about the Illinois LEND program, what it is like to work with and for Rocco and Christy, how being an insider gets you perks like mocking the hosts, and what Cydney Liebenberg and Hannah Brandt are doing with the experiences from this year working on the podcast. We couldn't have done it without them! We really, really couldn't have. We aren't really sure we can keep pulling this off come May, to be honest. Stay tuned to find out and to hear more about these amazing women who are doing so much to change the way disabled bodies are viewed and addressed in physical therapy. They are going to do great things and we can't wait to continue following them on their journeys! Take a trip with us to learn all about accessible travel! Catarina Rivera joins us to share about her travels, her tips, her work, and her desires for even more access. She has lots of information for you if you are a person with a disability who wants to travel. She has lots of insight and passion to share with you if you are a non-disabled person. She basically has all the fabulous words and Rocco and Christy just stumble through this episode as they sit in awe of all this wisdom. Or in jealousy of this location independent lifestyle. Certainly not in lack of preparation or a fog settling over cognition--never that. Gavin Neate, founder of WelcoME joins us to chat about making venues accessible, making tech sustainable, making community a priority, and making sourdough bread. That's right, we can make a tangent out of most any topic, friends, and this episode has a few. Gavin is masterful in getting us back around to the point, which is getting WelcoME (or something like it... but we prefer his company--in both senses of the word) to these United States, and the world. That's right. It's only our first episode and we are seeking to take over the world! With disability justice and customer service! Here's a run down of what we are doing and who is doing the deeds! Welcome to the show. The loud one is Christy, and her calmer counterpart is Rocco. Don't be fooled by their scripted opener! They get much more chaotic as the episode progresses. Learn a bit more about them and why they are here. Find Emily's amazing art at https://www.redbubble.com/people/ek212/shopHosted by Ausha.
