What is toxic positivity, and how can it impact the way we grieve and mourn? The months from October to December bring a series of holidays—Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas—that often come with tremendous expectations for joy and celebration. If you include Valentine’s Day in February, the pressure can feel even more intense. It's important to remember that experiencing joy isn’t always straightforward, and this pressure can sometimes lead to toxic positivity, where genuine feelings are pushed aside in favor of forced happiness. Our guest, Ed Gash sheds light on the distinction between mourning and grief, drawing from his profound loss with the death of his son, and his application of his education about grief and loss. He has created a program to help navigate these difficult emotions, offering support to those who may feel overwhelmed during such emotionally charged times. It’s crucial to honor our feelings and recognize that it's okay not to feel joyful during moments when we are grieving.  About Ed Gash Website: emgmourningpath.com Books By Ed Gash Beyond the Hashmarks – Authorhouse: https://www.amazon.com/-/es/dp/1886057931/?coliid=I21053BPKZGLW&colid=BN20YDXXJOUU&psc=0&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it Culture Coaching: https://www.amazon.com/-/es/dp/1434374777/?coliid=I2PES4J2LAZ5CN&colid=BN20YDXXJOUU&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it Resources Related to the Episode One Mindful Day at a Time by Alan D Wolfelt, PhD https://bookshop.org/a/103302/9781617222634 Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief by David Kessler and Co-Author Elizabeth Ku-ler Ross https://bookshop.org/a/103302/9781501192746 About Angels 2nd Class Website: www.Angels2ndClass.com Contact.Kathy@Angels2ndClass.com Recommended Reading https://bookshop.org/lists/recommended-reading-from-a2c-episodes Angels 2nd Class Merchandise: https://angels-2nd-class.creator-spring.com/ Credits Production Services: CoffeeCut Studios, Bryan Archilla All Image and musical assets acquired from Motionarray.com
Stories of Gratitude

Stories of Gratitude

2024-11-2614:17

In this special Thanksgiving edition of Angels 2nd Class, you will hear some personal stories people shared of their angels. One mother shares her gratefulness for the organ donation program.  Her story moves you to tears because it is not what you expect. Covid brought isolation to so many of us, for way too long.  In another listener’s letter, a wife shares her angel, a chaplain who helped comfort her through months of watching her husband’s health decline when she wasn’t able to visit with any friends or family. Another listener shared an encounter with a stranger who brought her comfort, while other letters share memories of teachers who went the extra mile. As you listen to their stories, and you get caught in the emotions of the holidays, it is such a blessing to be reminded of the special people in our lives who made a difference.   It is so valuable to remember to search for the opportunity to be that angel for anyone we can. In this episode of Angels 2nd Class, Kathy continues to bring attention to organ donation and the myths surrounding it.  The reality is far from what most of society believes from their glimpses of tv dramas.  Guest Brian Bardnt didn’t have a reason for is heart not working at age 22.  He was an active swimmer.  He admits, he wasn’t ready to deal with being sick.  His testimony isn’t what you would think.  He was ashamed of being sick and needing a transplant.  And, he had to wait years for one. At first, etiquette and mental health do not seem to go together.  But when you examine how they are intertwined, you will be surprised.  A first step in dealing with people when it causes you anxiety, remember, do not take what people say and do personally.  Increase your own self-care to find peace, and happiness. Listen as Kathy and Debbie discuss personal development and the simplicity of using “please” and “thank you,” like you would salt and pepper to create a connection of positivity and increase the well-being of not just yourself but those around you. Loneliness isn’t depressing, but do you know what is, extensive loneliness and extensive isolation.  It is hard to imagine in a society where we have wide-ranging ways to connect - cell phones at the ready, Facebook, email, texts, and countless social media platforms, we have a loneliness crisis. As design researcher and architect, Erin Peavey describes it, we don’t merely have a mental and physical health crisis in society, we have serious social health issues looming around us. Erin details how our environment needs to be transformational, and architects need to reflect on that.  We are wired for social connection.   There is data on how the lack of social connections link to a negative health impact from loneliness, which can even include obesity and smoking. Who does she design for when she works with healthcare facilities?  Erin says it is not just the patients who she has in mind when creating places for interactions.  Also, as an architect, she explains, don’t think architectural design is just simply about physical safety.  Mental safety is also a concern.  Remember, spaces and places, even light and furniture effect the way people feel and behave. Listen in as she shares her PANACHe way to create a space that offers positive impact.
