On this episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, I'm heading deep into the Black Hills Forest to revisit one of the most influential and controversial horror films of the past 30 years: THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999)!
I'm also taking a look at the new Lionsgate Limited Blu-ray release, featuring striking new packaging for this groundbreaking found-footage horror classic.
Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT follows three student filmmakers, Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard, as they venture into the Maryland woods to investigate the legend of the Blair Witch. What begins as a documentary project quickly becomes a nightmare as the group gets lost, strange things happen around their campsite, and something terrifying appears to be following them.
But the real story of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT is almost as fascinating as the movie itself!
Made on a shoestring budget, the film became a massive box-office phenomenon thanks to an ingenious marketing campaign that blurred the lines between fiction and reality. Its website, missing-person mythology, and documentary-style presentation convinced some audiences that what they were watching might actually be real.
The result was a cultural phenomenon that helped popularize found-footage horror and influenced an entire generation of filmmakers.
But more than 25 years later, does THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT still hold up?
In this retro review, I'm revisiting the film's unconventional storytelling, improvisational performances, minimalist filmmaking, and lasting influence on the horror genre. I'm also discussing the new Lionsgate Limited Blu-ray edition and whether this release deserves a place in your physical media collection.

On this episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, I'm revisiting one of the most entertaining and underrated horror comedies of the 1990s: THE FRIGHTENERS (1996), starring Michael J. Fox and directed by Peter Jackson!
And this time, we're taking a look at the Arrow Video 4K Ultra HD release of this supernatural cult classic!
Before Peter Jackson conquered Hollywood with The Lord of the Rings trilogy, he delivered this wonderfully strange combination of horror, comedy, mystery, and groundbreaking visual effects. Produced by Robert Zemeckis, THE FRIGHTENERS follows Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox), a former architect who develops the ability to communicate with ghosts following a personal tragedy.
Naturally, Frank turns his supernatural abilities into a business, using his ghostly friends to haunt unsuspecting homeowners before conveniently showing up to offer his paranormal investigation services. But when a sinister supernatural force begins killing people, Frank finds himself caught in a terrifying mystery that goes far beyond his usual ghostly scams.
Featuring Trini Alvarado, Peter Dobson, John Astin, Dee Wallace, Jeffrey Combs, and Jake Busey, THE FRIGHTENERS has developed a devoted cult following since its original theatrical release through Universal Pictures.
In this episode, I'm revisiting the movie nearly 30 years after its debut and examining whether Peter Jackson's unique blend of outrageous humor, creepy atmosphere, and supernatural thrills still holds up.
I'm also taking a look at Arrow Video's new 4K UHD physical media release, including its presentation, packaging, and appeal to collectors.

On this episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, I'm revisiting Marvel Studios' BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (2022) with a retro review of the Disney 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBook release.
Following the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, director Ryan Coogler faced an almost impossible task: continue the story of Wakanda without the actor who brought King T'Challa to life. The result is one of the most emotional and ambitious entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a film that balances grief, legacy, political conflict, and superhero spectacle.
Starring Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, and Tenoch Huerta Mejía, BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER introduces the underwater kingdom of Talokan and its powerful ruler, Namor, while exploring how Wakanda moves forward after the loss of its king.
But now that a few years have passed since its theatrical release, how well does the movie hold up?
In this retro review, I'm taking another look at the film's story, performances, action, emotional impact, and place within the MCU. I'm also discussing the 4K UHD physical media release, including its presentation and collectible SteelBook packaging.
In this episode:
Does BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER hold up on a rewatch?
How successfully does the film honor Chadwick Boseman and T'Challa?
Namor, Talokan, and the expansion of the MCU
Ryan Coogler's approach to grief, legacy, and the future of Wakanda
The Disney/Marvel Studios 4K Ultra HD SteelBook release
Is this edition worth owning for Marvel collectors and physical media enthusiasts?
Whether you're a longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, a Black Panther enthusiast, or a collector of 4K Blu-rays and limited-edition SteelBooks, join me as I revisit one of Marvel Studios' most emotionally significant films.
What do YOU think of BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER? Did it successfully carry on the legacy of the original film? Has your opinion changed since 2022? And do you own the 4K SteelBook?

There are strange movies. There are REALLY strange movies. And then there's SEX AND THE EMPEROR (1994).
On this episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, I'm diving into the new 88 Films Blu-ray release of SEX AND THE EMPEROR, a bizarre Hong Kong Category III historical exploitation film that left me staring at the screen wondering, "What the hell did I just watch?!"
Part outrageous period drama, part erotic exploitation, and part completely unhinged cinematic fever dream, SEX AND THE EMPEROR is the kind of movie that makes you question the creative decisions behind practically every scene. Just when you think you've figured out what kind of film you're watching, it finds another way to surprise you.
And believe me, not all of those surprises are good!
In this episode, I take a look at this unusual slice of Hong Kong cinema, share my reactions to its increasingly bizarre storytelling, and discuss whether this new 88 Films Blu-ray release deserves a spot in your physical media collection.
Is SEX AND THE EMPEROR an overlooked cult curiosity? A gloriously ridiculous piece of exploitation cinema? Or one of those movies that simply has to be seen to be believed?
I'm still trying to figure that out myself.
If you're a fan of 88 Films, Hong Kong cinema, Category III films, cult movies, Asian exploitation cinema, obscure Blu-ray releases, or just wonderfully weird cinema, this is an episode you won't want to miss.
Have YOU seen SEX AND THE EMPEROR? If so, please tell me I'm not the only one who finished this movie completely bewildered! Drop your thoughts in the comments.

🌼✨ FROM SWINGING LONDON TO GLOBAL SUPERSTARDOM! THE INCREDIBLE STORY OF TWIGGY!
In today's episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary takes a trip back to the swinging 1960s with Cleopatra Records' DVD release of TWIGGY: THE WOMAN BEHIND THE ICON, a fascinating documentary exploring the life, career, and enduring cultural influence of one of the most recognizable faces in fashion history!
With her distinctive pixie haircut, enormous eyes, and unmistakable style, Twiggy became an international sensation almost overnight, helping redefine beauty, fashion, and popular culture during one of the most revolutionary decades of the 20th century.
🎬 THE WOMAN BEHIND THE ICON
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sadie Frost, Twiggy examines the extraordinary life of Lesley Lawson, the working-class London teenager who became the face of the 1960s.
Discovered at just 16 years old, Twiggy quickly became one of the world's first true supermodels, appearing on magazine covers, inspiring fashion designers, and becoming a symbol of London's youth-driven cultural revolution.
Her androgynous look and unconventional beauty challenged traditional standards and helped usher in an entirely new era of fashion.
But Twiggy's remarkable career didn't end when the 1960s did.
She successfully transitioned into acting, singing, and television, earning two Golden Globe Awards for her performance in Ken Russell's 1971 musical The Boy Friend.
Over the decades, she continued reinventing herself, proving that her talents extended far beyond the modeling world.
Featuring personal reflections, archival material, and interviews with friends and collaborators, Twiggy: The Woman Behind the Icon explores the woman behind the public image and the extraordinary career that followed her initial burst of fame.
The documentary explores her journey through fame, personal challenges, artistic reinvention, and the pressures of becoming an international celebrity at such a young age.
📀 CLEOPATRA RECORDS BRINGS TWIGGY TO DVD!
In today's episode, Gary takes a closer look at both the documentary and Cleopatra Records' physical media release.
Here's what we're discussing:
🌼 Twiggy's extraordinary career: From teenage model to international fashion icon.
🎬 Sadie Frost's documentary: The film's approach to telling Twiggy's personal and professional story.
🎞️ Archival material: The photographs, interviews, and historical footage that bring her story to life.
📀 DVD presentation: Picture quality, audio, and the overall viewing experience.
📦 Packaging and artwork: A closer look at Cleopatra Records' colorful physical media edition.
🎞️ PRESERVING CULTURAL HISTORY THROUGH PHYSICAL MEDIA
One of the things I love about physical media is that it allows us to preserve more than just movies.
Documentaries about music, fashion, photography, and cultural history are equally important, particularly when they introduce new generations to influential figures whose contributions helped shape the world we live in today.
And Twiggy: The Woman Behind the Icon offers an opportunity to revisit one of the most fascinating personalities to emerge from the 1960s.
But does the documentary successfully capture the woman behind the famous photographs? What does it reveal about Twiggy's life beyond the runway? And is Cleopatra Records' DVD release worth picking up?
