Broadway Drummer Clayton Craddock on the Trust Economy, Building Relationships, and Starting Over at 60Host Becky Boyland interviews Broadway drummer and author Clayton Craddock about how relationships—not chops—create lasting music careers. Clayton shares growing up surrounded by soul, funk, rock, and jazz, falling in love with drums, and being steered toward accounting at Howard University before moving to New York in 1993 to pursue music while working day jobs. Over years of networking, he landed touring work (Footloose, Tick, Tick
Boom!), began subbing on Broadway (including Rent), and earned major credits and awards, ultimately playing four Tony Award–winning shows and two off-Broadway award winners, with his last being CATS: The Jellicle Ball (which closed after four months). Now starting over in Las Vegas at 60, he teaches “talent will get you in, but trust will get you hired” through Broadway Bound and Beyond, his book, podcast, and masterclass, emphasizing the long game, versatility, and realistic expectations.https://youtu.be/JP7ieIO_6RYConnect with Clayton Craddock:Websites: https://broadwayboundandbeyond.com and https://claytoncraddock.comPodcast: Broadway Bound and Beyond with Clayton Craddock https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/broadway-drumming-101-the-podcast/id1575847517Instagram: @claytoncraddock and @broadwayboundandbeyondYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@broadwaydrumming101Sign up for the October 29 masterclass, The Trust Economy: https://www.broadwayboundandbeyond.com/p/talent-gets-you-noticed-trust-getsSponsors:She Produces Music: https://www.sheproducesmusic.comFeatured Song:”Undo” by Becky Boyland, written by Becky Joleen Boyland (used with permission).Timestamps:00:00 Teaser: Clayton Craddock Interview00:21 Introduction01:07 Broadway by Accident02:44 Family Roots and Funk06:10 First Drum Kit Spark08:47 Berklee Dream Deferred10:59 Howard Band and NYC Move13:31 Day Jobs and Nightlife16:25 First Tour Breakthrough20:04 From Tours to Broadway21:47 Trust Economy Networking25:22 Broadway Journey to CATS: The Jellicle Ball28:06 Show Closes Suddenly28:49 Carless in New York30:07 Subway Burnout31:15 SPONSOR: She Produces Music31:46 Starting Over in Vegas33:13 Pandemic Perspective34:32 Podcast to Book Blueprint37:56 Broadway Is Temp Work39:49 Beyond the Pit Life43:04 Tours and Theater Ecosystem45:53 Making It and Paying It Forward50:49 Advice for Dream Chasers56:23 Where to Find Clayton57:30 Final Thanks and Wrap58:16 Coda01:00:33 Featured Song: "Undo" by Becky BoylandStream all the released music from Second Verse any time! Jesse Sterling Harrison on a Bulletproof Creative Process, Archival Releases, and Keeping Music FunIn this episode of Second Verse, Becky interviews songwriter, recording artist, and author Jesse Sterling Harrison, whose archival solo acoustic album Catch and Release Program has been remastered and released on Brave Tiger Records, curated by Joshua David Thayer; the songs were recorded in a living room around 1998 and previously circulated only among friends. Jesse describes starting to make up songs at age four or five, being influenced by a musical family, and later sidelining music during early parenthood before returning after divorce and, more recently, as an empty nester in his 50s. He explains a “bulletproof” creative process built on capturing ideas anywhere (work truck, tractor, airport terminals, voice memos, and even soap notes on a bathroom mirror), writing an album using the online drum machine Drumbit, and organizing a wide-ranging catalog into distinct projects with clear elevator pitches. He also shares how a humbling party jam pushed him to maintain his guitar skills and emphasizes prioritizing fun in recording and performance.https://youtu.be/ZPacUjeKPDoConnect with Jesse Sterling Harrison:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jessesterlingharrison/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554253302349YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@MysticWarriorMusicBrave Tiger Records: https://bravetigerrecords.com/Album on Bandcamp: https://jessesterlingharrison1.bandcamp.com/album/jesse-sterling-harrison-catch-and-release-programSponsors:She Produces Music: https://www.sheproducesmusic.comFeatured Song:”Your Favorite” by Jesse Sterling Harrison, written by Jesse Sterling Harrison (used with permission).Timestamps:00:00 Teaser: Jesse Sterling Harrison Interview00:38 Introduction02:19 Welcome and Origins03:07 Family Musical Roots04:02 Life Shift and Parenthood05:20 Returning to Creativity06:40 Bulletproof Creative Habits09:04 Home Studio and Dream Ideas12:35 Capture and Rework Old Songs14:41 New Tools and Drum Machine Writing17:56 Genre Buckets and Artist Branding22:40 Consistency and Practice Mindset26:28 SPONSOR: She Produces Music27:01 Lyrics and Song Storytelling32:01 Upcoming Releases and Formats37:08 Keep Music Fun38:30 Advice for Coming Back41:42 Where to Find Jesse42:20 Final Thanks and Wrap-Up42:28 CodaStream all the released music from Second Verse any time! Second Verse: Vincent Van Den Broeck on Mindset, Consistency, and Doing the Work Until It’s DoneHost Becky Boyland interviews Belgian entrepreneur/restauranteur and author Vincent Van den Broeck, who shares how music has always shaped his life through emotionally linked moments. After being hit by a car on a scooter in Brussels on October 11, 2024, Vincent spent three weeks in a coma and months in rehab, where a friend’s music pushed him to “do more, take one more step.” Now recovered, he wrote Everything Feels Impossible Until It’s Done and founded the Until It’s Done (UID) Club to help people pursue goals with consistency and accountability. In the conversation he challenges Becky—and listeners—with “Why do you do what you do?
Now do. Show me,” emphasizing that impact isn’t measured by views and that becoming an artist comes down to who you are when life isn’t going your way.https://youtu.be/9_R1z_w5aY0Connect with Vincent Van den Broeck:https://theuidclub.comhttps://hashtagbrussels.comSocials: @hashtagbrusselsSocials: @vincentinthekitchenVincent’s book, Everything Feels Impossible Until It's Done: https://www.theuidclub.com/the-bookSponsors:She Produces Music: https://www.sheproducesmusic.comFeatured Song:”Last to Leave” by Becky Boyland, written by Becky Joleen Boyland (used with permission).Timestamps:00:00 Teaser: Vincent Van den Broeck Interview01:55 Welcome, Vincent02:50 Music and Meaning05:01 Artists' Impact Beyond Stats08:26 Restaurant Beginnings12:16 Love the Work Not Image15:10 Your Turn!15:17 Prove It With Action17:42 Consistency Beats Numbers22:23 SPONSOR: She Produces Music22:56 The 2024 Accident25:38 Healing and Perspective29:06 Book and Mission32:31 Until Its Done Club34:02 Where to Find Vincent35:50 Coda38:34 Featured Song: "Last to Leave" by Becky BoylandStream all the released music from Second Verse any time! Kris Bradley on Burnout, Autism Discovery, and Reclaiming Her Authentic Sound with ‘Midnight Church Aftermath’Host Becky Boyland welcomes Maui-based indie artist Kris Bradley, an independent singer-songwriter, producer, and guitarist who spent over 20 years largely behind the scenes writing to briefs, producing for other artists, earning 200+ film/TV placements, and building the music education company Produce Like A Boss. Kris shares her early musical roots, stage fright, touring with an all-girl Led Zeppelin tribute, learning songwriting craft, and producing out of necessity. She explains how entrepreneurship and marketing gradually pulled her away from making music, leading to severe autistic burnout, loss of short-term memory, and three years of creative darkness after selling her company. A spontaneous performance in Maui reignited her desire to perform and write, sparking her debut double-disc concept album, “Midnight Church Aftermath,” recorded with a full band near Nashville and described as “Ameri-Kinda,” emphasizing authenticity over commercial rules.https://youtu.be/wbwyNH2PFN4Connect with Kris Bradley:Website: https://www.krisbradleymusic.comInstagram: https://instagram.com/krisbradleymusicTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@krisbradleymusicSpotify (Fireproof): https://open.spotify.com/track/79xPM1hfZmruZH7XOnKegQApple Music (Fireproof): https://music.apple.com/us/song/fireproof/6787345596YouTube (Fireproof video): https://youtube.com/watch?v=YlkH41OSakQSponsors:She Produces Music: https://www.sheproducesmusic.comFeatured Song:”Shapeshifter” by Kris Bradley, written by Kris Bradley, Blue Foley (used with permission).Timestamps:00:00 Teaser: Kris Bradley Interview00:38 Introduction01:52 Welcome and Musical Roots05:13 Stage Fright Years06:22 Cover Bands Bar Life07:29 Zeppelin Tour Turning Point09:03 Learning Songwriting Craft10:17 Asia Pop Boot Camp11:27 Production Out of Necessity15:51 Produce Like a Boss Origins18:03 Entrepreneur Drift20:45 Autistic Burnout23:07 Maui Music Revival26:59 SPONSOR: She Produces Music27:30 Monotropic Focus Explained30:23 Writing Without Agenda31:43 Two Act Album Vision38:29 Concept-First Songwriting40:51 Branding And Authenticity42:49 Advice for New Artists46:52 Truth Beats Craft in AI Era49:06 Breaking Rules And Going Genreless53:56 Where to Follow Kris54:51 Coda56:56 Featured Song: "Shapeshifter" by Kris BradleyStream all the released music from Second Verse any time! Harley DiNardo on Getting Dropped Twice, Returning to Music After 9/11 Loss, and Going All In After the Palisades FireHost Becky Boyland interviews New York-born singer-songwriter Harley DiNardo about his long path back to music after early success, two major-label deals, and years away. Harley traces his origin story from a formative high school Battle of the Bands to relentless practice, switching from bass to singing, and partnering with songwriter-guitarist Derrek Hawkins. He describes getting signed to Warner Brothers-backed Revolution Records after a Ticketmaster competition and later landing a BMG-backed deal for White Light Motorcade by handing demo CDs to strangers while working as a waiter, only to be dropped both times due to poor marketing. After stepping back to raise a family and run a hair salon, a wildfire that burned down his new salon and threatened his home pushed him to commit fully to music. He discusses negative self-talk, age stigma, tragedy including losing his sister in 9/11, and his new single “LA to NY.”https://youtu.be/9SoclNknUdkConnect with Harley DiNardo:Website: https://www.harleydinardo.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/harleydinardoartistInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/harleydinardomusicYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@harleydinardobandSponsors:She Produces Music: https://www.sheproducesmusic.comFeatured Song:”LA to NY” by Harley DiNardo, written by Harley DiNardo (used with permission).Timestamps:00:00 Teaser: Harley DiNardo Interview00:36 Introduction01:40 Welcoming Harley02:05 Battle of the Bands Awakening04:03 Learning Bass in a Hurry06:41 From Bassist to Singer09:44 Hair School and Reality Check12:21 Why Hairdressing Works15:20 Haunted Mansion Band Days17:14 Ticketmaster Contest Breakthrough20:43 Signing and Getting Dropped23:43 NYC Scene and Demo Hustle28:12 Dropped Again and Losing Hope31:33 Making Art Later in Life35:39 SPONSOR: She Produces Music36:13 Find Your Bees Audience38:02 Owning Your Artist Identity39:56 The Call That Won’t Quit43:59 Social Proof and Attention Hooks49:00 Fire Catalyst and Clean Slate52:45 Never Too Old to Create55:27 Writing "LA to NY"58:28 9/11 Loss and Serendipity01:03:19 Advice: Beat Negative Self Talk01:07:48 Where to Follow Harley DiNardo01:08:29 Coda01:10:13 Featured Song: "LA to NY" by Harley DiNardoStream all the released music from Second Verse any time!
