We had our first-ever national team manager on the podcast! And, even better for us, he’s a Welshman. We were delighted to be joined by Newport-born football coach Ewan Gunter, who was recently appointed Head Coach of Anguilla, a small island in the Caribbean. We talked about how his work through FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme led him to Anguilla and eventually to landing the job as head coach. We also got the lowdown on his first four games in charge, which took place just a few weeks ago during the CONCACAF Nations League. Plus, Ewan talked us through his coaching journey, from his studies at the University of South Wales and his experiences with the academies at his hometown club Newport County and Swansea City, to how he ended up working with FIFA. You can follow Ewan on X at @EwanGunter. And if you think you might have any links to Anguilla, please get in touch with the Anguilla Football Association at @AnguillaFA on X, too. If you're interested in Anguillan football, we also spoke to Gareth Thomas a few months ago about his work with Uprising FC and his social media work for the Anguilla Football Association. Miguel Pereira made his second appearance on the podcast to discuss his latest book, The Greatest: The Never Ending Story of Real Madrid. We discussed whether Real Madrid are the greatest club of all time, as well as some of the great teams and players the club has produced (or bought!). Plus, Miguel — just as he does in his book — dispelled some of the misconceptions surrounding the club and its history. We headed back to South Wales for our latest episode with Newport County fan and avid Wales supporter Sean Mills. We talked about how he became a Newport fan, their mad cup runs over the past ten years, the quirks of Rodney Parade, and their turbulent 1990s and 2000s before their successful rise out of those dark days. We also talked about Sean's various trips away watching Wales — from being at Euro 2016 to his recent trip to Copenhagen, and traipsing around Kazakhstan with a hangover. Cork native Alex O’Brien talks us through the joys of following his local club, Cork City, and the growing football culture in Ireland. We chat about matchdays at Turner’s Cross, the passion surrounding the League of Ireland and what makes Cork such a special football city. We also head across to the south of Madrid, where Alex has another footballing love: AD Alcorcón. Currently playing in Spain’s third tier, Alcorcón have embraced Alex as one of their own through his ‘Alcorcón Irlanda’ support, which gaves us a chance to explore the club, its fans and the pleasures of following fútbol modesto in Madrid.
