This week on Trades Talk, Justin White sits down with Joe Langton, CEO of Langton Group and founder of Automated Outdoor Solutions (AOS). Joe went from 11 years as a union electrician to running a 186-employee full service landscape, snow, and construction operation, and along the way built one of the largest robotic mowing fleets in the country (roughly $7 million in deployed robots across residential, commercial, and golf).
Joe is one of the loudest, most tactical voices in landscape automation, and this conversation is a masterclass in the operational reality of running robots at scale. No manufacturer hype, no theoretical demos, just the numbers, the mechanics, and the honest costs.
In this episode:
The full journey: 11 years as a union electrician, side job that turned into Langton Snow Solutions, the pivot into landscape maintenance for Costco and Walmart in 2005, and the accidental discovery in 2016 of the Husqvarna 450X that Joe mistook for a commercial Roomba on carpet
The AOS model: a "fractional CTO for golf courses," multi-brand ecosystem (Kress, Husqvarna, Echo, Segway, Sunseeker, Nexmo), and why Joe insists on being brand agnostic instead of loyal to any single manufacturer
Golf course automation in practice: the ball wash management system Joe imported from the UK and re-engineered for US voltage, and the exact pricing math ($14.88/hr for two pickers + ball wash, or $4.80/hr per operation and $20/acre for the superintendent)
The infrastructure problem nobody is talking about: 12 of Langton's 28 mowing crews are electric, and Joe is out of power. ComEd wants to install a 3,000 amp service, but until then, half his electric equipment is charging at the AOS dealership
The coming default wave: banks and PE do not yet know how to underwrite robotic capex, the default rate on electric equipment is rising, and Joe's advice to trade CEOs is to separate their robotics division in their P&L now so they can actually get financed
Joe's trade secret is direct. If you are going to ask someone else to do it, you have to do it yourself first. Otherwise you build the entire model on a false foundation.
If you are a trades operator watching automation vendors slap AI stickers on the same tools, a CEO wrestling with whether robotics really pencils inside a service business, or a leader trying to figure out how to actually finance and deploy this equipment at scale, this one is required listening.

The future of landscaping is already here, and it starts with the 60-inch Voyager that maps faster, stripes cleaner, and frees crews to do higher-value work. If you lead a landscape company, care about automation, or are trying to make AI actually useful in the field, this is the episode you need right now. Justin White takes you inside a live Kress Voyager demo and shows what changes when robotic mowing stops being a novelty and starts becoming an operating advantage. You’ll hear how manual mode makes the machine feel surprisingly familiar to crews, why the 60-inch platform is a major leap in speed and coverage, and how early adoption turns painful first-year learning into a real competitive edge. You’ll discover:
Why mapping once and reusing that boundary changes field production
How manual controls make the 60-inch easier for teams to trust and use
Why robotic mowing is about more than mowing—it’s about data, consistency, and better property decisions
How AI and robotics can help landscape companies fight inflation, improve margins, and raise quality
Why structured data, not flashy tools, is the real foundation for useful AI
Justin also breaks down the bigger opportunity around AI in the landscape industry, from using one trusted model well to avoiding the trap of spreading your business across too many tools. He shares what he’s seeing through live demos, the growing demand for autonomous mowing, and why companies that start learning now will be ahead when the technology matures further. This episode also looks ahead to the AI conversations happening at Elevate, the National Association of Landscape Professionals event, plus what it means to build a real “source of truth” for business data before layering in automation. If you want practical innovation, not hype, this one is packed with it. Perfect for landscape operators, business owners, field leaders, and anyone trying to turn robotics and AI into real-world ROI.

This week on Trades Talk, Justin White sits down with David Meltzer, legendary entrepreneur, speaker, and former CEO of the most notable sports agency in the world. David lost more than one hundred million dollars and went bankrupt, then built it all back with two coaches, a set of non-negotiables, and a mission to help over one billion people be happy.
His message to the trades is direct: most contractors lose money on eighty percent of their work because they never get comfortable charging what they are worth. In this fast, high energy conversation, David unpacks how to fix that, and how the way you sleep, think, and show up decides everything else.
In this episode:
Why eighty percent of the work most contractors take is quietly losing them money The two coaches David hired after losing everything, and why one was for sleep How two minutes a day beats two hours on a Saturday The simple daily conversation that turns strangers into buyers for life
David's trade secret is a single question you can ask everyone you meet, and it can send more than a hundred buyers your way every month. Whether you are burning out, undercharging, or just ready to think bigger, this one will change how you value your time, your work, and yourself.
David offered to send his book free to any tradesperson who reaches out. Email him at [email protected].

On this Weekly Update of Trades Talk, Justin White runs the show like a newsroom, rapid firing the biggest headlines hitting the trades and the wildest month yet in artificial intelligence. From a two billion dollar garage door exit to an Anthropic researcher sounding the alarm, there is a lot to unpack.
It is part industry briefing, part gut check on where the smartest operators are placing their bets heading into 2027.
In this episode:
Why Tommy Mello's reported $2 billion A1 Garage Door exit should change how you set goals The Anthropic researcher who walked away from millions, and the warning he left behind Is your website ready for an AI agent to book the job on your customer's behalf? The compounding math behind K&D's $100,000 minimum wage moonshot
The thread running through all of it is the moonshot. Justin breaks down the simple compounding math behind K&D's goal of a billion dollar platform and a $100,000 minimum wage by 2035, then challenges you to say your own big goal out loud to someone you love in the next 48 hours. Silence only creates uncertainty, and clarity is how you get a team marching in one direction.
Whether you are chasing a huge vision or just trying to keep up with the AI headlines without drowning in them, this one will light a fire under you.

This week on Trades Talk, Justin White sits down with Jack Jostes, founder and CEO of Ramblin Jackson, the snow and landscape exclusive marketing agency, host of The Landscaper's Guide podcast, and author of the new book The Landscaper's Guide to Direct Response Sales and Marketing. After 17 years building marketing systems inside the green industry, Jack lands on one core belief: the company that actually follows up is the company that wins.
Jack and Justin get tactical on why most contractors are sitting on a goldmine of unclosed bids, how to define your Hell Yes customer and build your entire marketing engine around them, and why it can take up to 18 touches to close a sale. They dig into multi-touch follow-up campaigns, using AI without losing the human touch, and the seasonal gold mining moves that fill your shoulder season schedule.
In this episode:
The Hell Yes customer: how to define your ideal lead and build your whole marketing engine around them, and how one contractor niched into HOAs and grew from $750K to over $5M
Direct response vs brand awareness: why measurable, repeatable follow-up beats being the best company in town, and why closing can take up to 18 touches
Gold mining your database: how a single Call Jam session of calling old, unclosed bids can fill next week's schedule, something Justin says works about 90 percent of the time
Multi-touch, multimedia follow-up: landing pages, QR postcards, cold email, LinkedIn, and real phone calls working together to land a single commercial account
The AI plus analog balance: automating with a landscape built CRM and engagement scoring while handwritten cards and personal calls do the closing, plus sending prospects a prompt that shapes what their AI learns about your company
Jack's biggest takeaway is simple. Be the one professional who actually follows up. Most businesses are terrible at it, which is exactly why the follow-up itself becomes your edge.
If you are a landscape or trades owner leaving estimates unclosed, buried in manual lead gen, or trying to build a sales engine that runs without you, this one is a playbook you can put to work this week.
