Tourism is one of South Africa's greatest opportunities, and the good news is that its impact goes far beyond beautiful hotels, incredible holidays and international visitors. Every tourist who arrives in our country represents jobs, opportunities and families being supported. Think about the hotel staff, the drivers, the restaurants, the local suppliers and the small businesses that all benefit when someone chooses to visit South Africa. I recently sat down with Alan Campbell, the Talent and Commercial Director at ANEW Hotels & Resorts, on my Good Things Guy podcast, and we had such an interesting conversation about the future of tourism in our country. ANEW itself is a fantastic South African success story. They've grown from just two properties in 2017 to 17 hotels and resorts across the country in just nine years. But what really stood out for me was Alan's belief that we've barely scratched the surface of South Africa's tourism potential. We all know Cape Town and the Kruger National Park, but there are so many other incredible destinations worth exploring. From the beautiful beaches of KwaZulu-Natal to the mountains around Rustenburg and the hidden gems along the Garden Route, our country has so much to offer. And here's another thing I loved about our conversation. Alan believes hospitality is one of the most accessible industries for young South Africans looking to build a career. He actually started out as a bartender in Cape Town, and I shared how my own career began with waitering in Alberton and working at a wedding venue. Those early jobs taught us both lessons about people, communication and customer service that we still use today. Alan has also made it his personal mission to positively impact a thousand families, and he believes tourism is one of the best ways to achieve that. And I think that's the real good news here. When we support local tourism, we're doing so much more than booking a holiday. We're supporting jobs, creating opportunities and helping South African families build better futures. So perhaps it's time to explore a little more of our own beautiful country, because every trip has the potential to make a difference in someone's life. And that is a very good thing! 🎧 Watch and listen to the episode on all our social platforms (like all of them). 📆 New episodes drop weekly. 🏡 Powered by BetterBond. This week on my "Good Things with Brent Lindeque" podcast, I sat down with one of South Africa’s most celebrated advertising minds, Dr Pepe Marais, the co-founder of Joe Public. We spoke about his incredible career, the challenges of building a business, almost losing everything to bankruptcy and how those experiences completely changed his understanding of success. We also chatted about his new book... an idea. One Word. Pepe believes that every person and every organisation has one defining word that gives them purpose and he even dreams of helping South Africa discover its own word! We also discovered that we share a philosophy about doing good. Pepe calls himself "aggressively good" because he believes that making a real difference requires more than just good intentions. And I absolutely love that! It's a fascinating conversation about purpose, success and using whatever influence we have to make life better for others. 🎧 Watch and listen to the episode on all our social platforms (like all of them). 📆 New episodes drop weekly. 🏡 Powered by BetterBond. A breast cancer diagnosis can change your life in ways you never imagined but sometimes those changes can lead you somewhere quite extraordinary. This week on my Good Things with Brent Lindeque podcast, I chatted to Aileen Lamb, the former CEO of New Media, who was diagnosed with breast cancer on Women's Day, at exactly the same age her own mother had been diagnosed. Thankfully, her cancer was detected early but the experience made her reassess her life and ask herself one important question... "If not now, when?" And that question changed everything. Aileen decided to pursue a dream she'd carried for years, immersing herself in the world of perfumery and eventually launching Heirloom Perfumery, a proudly South African fragrance brand. And she's giving back too, with 5 percent of online sales going to Project Flamingo, which supports women receiving breast cancer treatment in public hospitals. This conversation was incredibly meaningful for me as my own mom has just finished radiation treatment for breast cancer, and with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it felt like an important story to share. We also spoke about finding your ikigai, a Japanese concept meaning your reason for being, and how even the scariest experiences can sometimes push us towards a new purpose. What I loved most is that Aileen's story isn't really about cancer. It's about everything that can still happen afterwards and the wonderful possibilities waiting for us when we decide to follow our dreams. Rory Steyn had one of the most extraordinary jobs in South African history: protecting Nelson Mandela. Appointed to lead Madiba’s personal protection team in 1996, Rory travelled with him locally and internationally, getting to know the man behind the global icon and witnessing moments most South Africans never got to see. His remarkable career later took him to six Olympic Games and multiple Cricket World Cups, while his passion for giving back led him to create the African Icons, supporting children of police officers killed in the line of duty. This week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, Rory shares those incredible Madiba memories, the lessons he learnt along the way and the stories from a life spent protecting others. 🎧 Watch and listen to the episode on all our social platforms (like all of them). 📆 New episodes drop weekly. 🏡 Powered by BetterBond. What if we were all just a little more careful with each other, a little more thoughtful with our words and a little quicker to check in on someone who might need us? That is the message behind KY-ND, an initiative created by Jen Rowe in honour of her son, Ky, who died by suicide in August 2022. Jen wanted to keep Ky’s kindness moving through the world, and it started with something incredibly simple: a bench at his school. The idea is that if you see someone sitting there alone, you sit next to them and just be there. Since then, KY-ND has grown into a community, with benches, T-shirts that start conversations and more than R55,000 raised for Operation Smile South Africa. Jen joined me on this week’s Good Things with Brent Lindeque poddie to talk about Ky, grief, love and why our words and actions matter more than we may ever realise. Her message is beautifully simple: notice people, check in, choose your words with care and, whenever you can, be a little more KY-ND. 🎧 Watch and listen to the episode on all our social platforms (like all of them). 📆 New episodes drop weekly. 🏡 Powered by BetterBond.
