On August 23, 1939, two foreign ministers sat down in Moscow and signed a piece of paper. The public version was a non-aggression pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union — two countries that had been ideological enemies for years. The world was confused. They were supposed to hate each other. What the world couldn’t see was the secret annex attached to the treaty. The document that wasn’t photographed. The document the Soviet Union denied existed for fifty years. The Secret Protocol divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence. Germany’s sphere. Russia’s sphere. And in the middle, a country called Poland — which had existed as an independent state for only twenty-one years — was carved in half by two men who considered it an object of negotiation, not a sovereign nation.Nine days later, Germany invaded from the west. Eleven days after that, the Soviet Union invaded from the east. Poland fought on two fronts simultaneously against two of the largest armies in the world, while Britain and France declared war and sent no troops.History has a pattern. It doesn’t always repeat. But it rhymes so consistently, and in such specific ways, that refusing to notice the rhyme becomes its own kind of willful blindness. This is a public episode. In August 1864, Abraham Lincoln was certain he was going to lose the presidential election. The war was going badly. Sixty thousand Union men had died in a single summer campaign. His own party was trying to replace him. His opponent was running on a peace platform that would end the war by surrendering to the Confederacy.People around him suggested the obvious: postpone the election. No country had ever held a national election in the middle of a civil war. Lincoln had already suspended habeas corpus. He had emergency powers. The justification was there. He refused. He didn’t just refuse quietly. He wrote down exactly why — in language so clear it reads like a warning aimed at every future generation of Americans who might face the same temptation.‘We cannot have free government without elections. And if the rebellion could force us to forgo, or postpone a national election, it might fairly claim to have already conquered and ruined us.’This episode tells the full story of the 1864 election — the worst moment of Lincoln’s presidency, the sealed memorandum he asked his Cabinet to sign without reading, the case that was made for postponement, the argument Lincoln made against it, the soldiers who voted from the front lines, and the victory that changed everything. It is the story of a man who chose to let the people decide — even when he believed the people were about to make a catastrophic mistake. Between October 8th and 11th, 2026, Ukrainian drones struck three Yandex data centers in Russia — in Sasovo, Kaluga, and Vladimir. Two were shut down entirely. A third was severely damaged. Then something strange happened.Cloudflare data showed that automated bot traffic from Yandex’s network dropped from 88% to 0.4% — almost to zero. Zelenskyy went on television and said social media had become “easier to breathe on.” Pro-Russian accounts went quiet. The story spread: Ukraine had taken out Russia’s troll farms. Here’s the thing. That story isn’t quite right. This video explains what the Cloudflare chart actually shows, what kind of “bots” stopped, why the drop happened, and what we can and can’t conclude from the available data.Because the real story — what this attack actually revealed about Russia’s digital infrastructure — is more interesting than the bot farm narrative. And it matters more. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit rejil.substack.com
Press freedom is at a 25-year low in 2026. At least 252 journalists have been killed since October 2023 — the deadliest period for media workers ever recorded. The United States has fallen to 64th in the global press freedom rankings.History has a very clear message about what this means. In every country where a free society has collapsed into dictatorship, the press was targeted first. Not second. Not eventually. First. Before the courts were packed. Before the opposition was jailed. Before the atrocities began. The press. This episode traces that pattern across two centuries of authoritarian history — from Nazi Germany and Stalin’s Soviet Union to modern Hungary — to explain why the free press is always the first target, how the destruction is carried out, and what the historical record tells us happens next. This is not a comfortable video. The historical parallels are documented, the methods are consistent, and the outcomes are clear. This is a public episode. In July 2026, the Trump administration invoked “communism” 81 times in two weeks. A State Department report openly praised McCarthy-era blacklists as “a model that worked.” The White House declared an “unprecedented global offensive against the transnational threat of Radical Left terrorism.”The playbook is back.Part 3 of The Continuum’s Red Scare series asks the question the first two episodes were building toward: who actually benefited from the Red Scare? Follow the power. Follow the careers it built. Follow the institutional machinery it created. And then ask why it’s being rebuilt right now. This is not a comfortable episode. The historical record is clear, and it points somewhere specific. This is a public episode.
