Everyone prepares you for the birth. Almost no one prepares you for what happens in your head before, during, and after it.
This week I’m joined by Elizabeth Greenly, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with Flourish Counseling Services in Raleigh, who supports women through infertility, pregnancy, loss, and early parenthood. We talk about the emotional rollercoaster of trying to conceive, why pregnancy loss is still met with so much silence, and how partners can stay on the same team through it all.
We also dig into postpartum depression and anxiety: the difference between the baby blues, PPD, and PPA, what intrusive thoughts really are, the signs a partner might notice first, and what a first therapy session actually looks like. As a feeding specialist, I had to ask how feeding struggles and maternal mental health feed into each other. We wrap up with the identity shift of new motherhood, the comparison trap, and the mental load of being the default parent, including how to hand off a task so it’s actually off your plate.
If you’ve ever thought “I love my baby, but I miss my old life,” this one’s for you.
