Midnight Cinema: A Horror Movie Podcast with Art & Erik

The Vatican has a top-secret mission for you, so grab the holy water, garlic, silver stakes, zip lines, circular saw blades, and machine gun crossbows because we're heading to Transylvania!  Art and Erik are joining the Pope's favorite monster hunter, Van Helsing, on an adventure that involves vampires, werewolves, zombies and Frankenstein's monster.   That's right, this 2004 action-adventure horror film was directed by Stephen Sommers after his massive hit with the Brendan Fraser-led The Mummy. After that success, Universal Studios threw open the monster vault as well as their checkbook, and the result was this mashup of James Bond, Universal Monsters, and swashbuckling adventure films.   Using CGI alongside practical sets and wirework, Sommers set out to make a blockbuster starring a young Hugh Jackman (entering his Wolverine era) and Kate Beckinsale, who was already beginning her own monster franchise, Underworld.   Van Helsing underperformed at the box office, and critics were underwhelmed. The movie James Corden never wanted you to see! The movie with a title so cheeky it's been changed over the years! It's the 2009 horror-comedy Lesbian Vampire Killers, in which two down-on-their-luck Londoners take a trip to the remote village of Cragwich and find themselves in the middle of a sapphic vampire apocalypse. James Corden and Mathew Horne were paired as the leads off the success of their popular BBC series Gavin and Stacy. The film attempted to put Hammer Horror, Edgar Wright-like visual flair, frat humor, and a bevy of babes in a blender and pour out a cult classic. Art and Erik hop in the VW bus and head for The Baron's Rest pub to investigate this forgotten campy oddity that promises a lot in its title. The Midnight Cinema this week will be populated by vengeful Vicars, Swedish coeds and ominous barkeeps. Oh, and vampire women of course.
