I have always had a strong work ethic, believing that reward comes from effort and that nobody owes me anything. Yet I have been questioning whether that belief has led me to make myself earn things that perhaps should not be conditional at all, including love, rest and appreciation. The uncomfortable part is recognising who has been doing the assessing. Have I been holding myself to standards of contribution, perfection and compliance, whilst conveniently blaming others for the judgement? As we quieter ones know, becoming braver often means looking at ourselves honestly, without allowing self judgement to have the final word. Perhaps the next adventure is discovering who we are when we stop trying to earn our worth. Key Points 📌Love without conditions 📌Rest without guilt 📌Appreciation without earning #FlourishingIntroverts #Introverts #SelfLove 🎧 Tune-in here for the full episode - https://youtu.be/hFiBtaDgGhs or here: https://sites.libsyn.com/231761/ep-348-the-things-we-make-ourselves-earn 🔗 Resources Visit https://hub.flourishingintroverts.com/resourcesp for tools and resources mentioned during the podcast. For those of a certain age, the title of this episode may have a familiar tune running through your head. But how comfortable are we introverts with admitting what we really, really want? Somewhere along the line, many of us learnt that wanting was selfish, so we became rather adept at being reasonable, keeping the peace and hoping others would somehow work out what we needed. I have been reminded recently that this can leave emotions bubbling away until they erupt, usually when we would much rather avoid a difficult conversation. The real work is learning to distinguish needs from wants, notice when something is not sitting right, and find the courage to speak up calmly and clearly. Our personal agency begins when we recognise that we have both the right and the responsibility to ask. Key Points 📌 Distinguishing wants from needs 📌 Speaking before emotions erupt 📌 Taking responsibility through agency #FlourishingIntroverts #Introverts #PersonalAgency 🎧 Tune-in here for the full episode -https://youtu.be/0LfjLfe8I_M or here: https://sites.libsyn.com/231761/ep-347-what-you-really-really-want 🔗 Resources Visit https://hub.flourishingintroverts.com/resourcesp for tools and resources mentioned during the podcast. I was quite the rebel in my younger years, although my good girl tendencies had a habit of keeping that wild child trussed up in her Sunday best. It took me time to recognise how many unwritten rules I had accepted, from believing I had to be entertaining to thinking that challenging authority meant being a fast track to dismissal. Some of those beliefs were mine to question. Others were rules I had helped pass on to others, even when part of me knew better. These days, I see beliefs as working assumptions that need examining against the evidence. We do not have to keep obeying rules simply because someone else decided they were the done thing. Key Points 🔑 The rules we inherit 🔑 Beliefs are tools, not truths 🔑 Choosing which rules to observe #FlourishingIntroverts #Introverts #EthicalRebel #Rulebreaker 🎧 Tune-in here for the full episode - or here: 🔗 Resources Visit https://hub.flourishingintroverts.com/resourcesp for tools and resources mentioned during the podcast. I know I have a drawer full of mental receipts, and I suspect I am not alone. They are the bits of evidence we keep to remind ourselves of what we did or did not do, particularly when the experience has acquired a meaning involving regret, shame or embarrassment. But memories are reconstructed and embellished, and the meaning we make of what happens to us may not accurately reflect the reality of the situation. So rather than deciding that we need to chuck everything out without so much as a backwards glance, I am exploring what happens when we sort by the value those receipts add. My trusty old friend Transactional Analysis has something useful to offer here, particularly the Adult ego state, where we can sift without comparison, attachment to outcome and quite so much emotion. Asking how many receipts we have in itself is the wrong question because we what need to ask is what they are costing us to keep. Key Points 🔑 Question the meaning 🔑 Sort by value 🔑 Notice what you hoard #FlourishingIntroverts #Introverts #LifeScripts 🎧 Tune-in here for the full episode - or here: 🔗 Resources Read The Flourishing Nudge article The Scripts Behind The Receipts, right here. Knowing myself has been a lifelong project, and I suspect it will remain one because I'm still discovering things about me that I thought I already knew. But knowing why I do something doesn't automatically mean I am going to do anything differently. Self-awareness is useful information, but it isn't the destination; what I do with that information is where the interesting bit begins. For me, that increasingly means experimentation: trying something, paying attention to what happens and deciding what the evidence is telling me. Because there is a subtle difference between having insight and using insight. So, what do you know about yourself that you have been using to understand your behaviour, and what might happen if you used that same knowledge to experiment with changing one small thing? Key points 📌Self-awareness isn't the destination 📌Insight needs experimenting 📌Small experiments without attachment #FlourishingIntroverts #BecomingBraver #BraverIntroverts Watch or listen to this Bonus Flourishing Byte as you get ready for the Becoming Braver Adventure.
