Description

The award-winning One in Ten podcast, now in its eighth season, is powered and produced by National Children’s Alliance (NCA). This social science podcast was first launched on May 2, 2019, after our host, NCA CEO, and podcast enthusiast Teresa Huizar, couldn’t find any shows that were directly linked to child abuse and the latest science surrounding the issue. Teresa wanted to create a go-to resource for child abuse professionals, giving them access to the brightest minds dealing with the problem of child abuse. You’re invited to listen to our podcast and get the latest science and overall insights on keeping children safe and helping them heal.

In this episode of One in Ten, host Teresa Huizar engages in a thought-provoking conversation with Dr. Lindsey Bullinger of Georgia Tech about research linking paid family leave (PFL) to reduced infant child maltreatment. Bullinger explains why infancy is a critical period; infants have the highest maltreatment rates and PFL typically provides 6-12 weeks of paid bonding time plus income support. Using nationwide data (2004-2020, excluding COVID-related reporting drops) and early state program...
In this episode of 'One in Ten,' Host Teresa Huizar interviews Elizabeth Phillips of the Phillips Foundation about Trey’s Law, inspired by Phillips’ late brother Trey. Phillips explains how NDAs (often called confidentiality or non-disparagement clauses) have become standard in civil settlements, sometimes signed by parents or unaw...
In this episode of 'One in Ten,' Host Teresa Huizar interviews McGill University doctoral candidate Kayla Schick about grooming and how post-abuse maintenance tactics contribute to delayed disclosure and longer abuse duration. Schick explains delayed disclosure as common in child sexual abuse and describes offender tactics that discourage reporting, including secrecy demands, threats, guilt, victim blaming, and confusion about whether abuse occurred. They discuss implications for prevention, ...
In this episode of One in Ten, host Teresa Huizar interviews psychotherapist and researcher Anette Birgersson about multidisciplinary professionals’ perspectives on online child sexual abuse, including why prevalence is hard to measure due to research barriers with younger children, normalization, and underreporting driven by shame and guilt. They discuss how many cases are discovered through police investigations rather than child disclosure, creating varied reactions and challenges for fore...
Host Teresa Huizar speaks with Dr. Jamie Yoder of Colorado State University about how adversity and trauma increase risk for teens’ problematic sexual behaviors and how trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) can be leveraged to expand treatment resources and reduce punitive responses. Yoder describes her clinical background with justice-involved youth and emphasizes that trauma is a major, though not causal, risk factor linked through intermediaries like attachment disruptions, ...
