I'm your host, Dr. Arlene Pace Green—organizational psychologist, CEO, business owner, wife, and Mom. Before launching my own firm, I spent 20 years in corporate roles navigating the demands of leadership, family, life, and my faith. Today, I help leaders and organizations grow with clarity, intention, and results.

This podcast is an extension of that work. It's where we share ideas, tools, and conversations that fuel our growth. Whether you're here to gain practical insight, connect with inspiring guests, or just take a breath and reflect—you are in the right place.

Let's explore together what it really means to work well and live well—starting now.

Sponsored by Enelra Talent Solutions, LLC - Your Go-To Coaching Partner. In this Essentials episode, Arlene sits down with Stephen Clarke for a conversation about what it really means to be a strategic leader in a world that moves faster than most of our plans can keep up with. Stephen is a Global Strategy and Innovation Partner at JLL, and for over 20 years he's worked with executives and teams at critical moments when strategy needs to move from the whiteboard to the real world. He's a coach with Enelra Talent Solutions, and his mission is simple: making the future feel doable. Whether you're leading a company, a team, a family, or just yourself through a complicated season, this conversation is for you. Join us as we explore: Why strategic leadership is really about leading toward a future that doesn't exist yet, and how that reframes the whole job of being a leader. The compass versus GPS metaphor that reframes how we think about setting direction: why rigid step-by-step instructions fail in complex environments and what to use instead. The difference between a good leader (who keeps the engine running) and a strategic leader (who's always asking where the engine should be going), and why the most effective leaders are both. The six paradoxes modern strategic leaders have to hold at the same time, including the "high integrity politician" who navigates organizational politics without compromising their values. Why decision confidence matters more than absolute clarity in today's dynamic environment, and how to move forward when the full picture isn't available yet. How the most strategic leaders carve out "green zone" reflection time, even just 15 to 20 minutes twice a day, and why it's one of the most undervalued leadership practices. The Three I's framework (issues, insights, ideas) you can weave into any one-on-one, team meeting, or self-reflection session to start building a strategic thinking muscle. Stephen's Four Helpful Lists framework (what's right, what's wrong, what's missing, what's confusing) and the story of how one high-stakes transformation team used it to uncover what the scorecard couldn't show. Why asking better questions is one of the simplest first steps to building strategic capability, and how to practice before you need it in a high-stakes moment. Why strategic leadership capability starts with the inner work: self-awareness, spiritual alignment, and emotional regulation. You can't give what you're not feeding. Whether you're leading a transformation, building a team, or simply trying to think more intentionally about where you're headed, this conversation is full of frameworks and practices you can start using this week. Sponsored by Enelra Talent Solutions, LLC - Your Go-To Coaching Partner. In this solo episode, Arlene Pace Green digs into one of the most powerful accelerators for your career, your leadership, and your life: self-awareness. This is a special episode because Enelra Talent Solutions is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and over the past decade Arlene and her team have coached hundreds of leaders across industries and levels. Self-awareness sits at the center of almost every one of those engagements. If you're a leader, HR partner, or professional who wants to understand not just how you see yourself but how others actually experience you, this episode is for you. Join us as we explore: The Tasha Eurich research that shows self-aware people are more confident, more creative, better decision-makers, and tend to get promoted more often, lead more effective teams, and run more profitable organizations. Why about 95% of us believe we're self-aware, but only 10 to 15% actually meet the criteria when it's measured, and what that gap tells us about how to grow. The two types of self-awareness that are not strongly related: internal (how clearly you see your own values, strengths, and reactions) and external (how well you understand your impact on others). The four self-awareness profiles (introspectors, seekers, pleasers, and the aware) and how to recognize which one you're operating in right now. Why experience and seniority can quietly make us less self-aware, and the "bubble" that forms around leaders as the stakes of giving them feedback get higher. The three moves that turn insight into real growth: commit small and specific, make it visible, and pace it steadily. Why asking "what" questions instead of "why" questions leads to more useful reflection and less self-criticism. The Marshall Goldsmith research on "leadership as a contact sport" and why follow-up with your colleagues matters more than the program you participated in. The counterintuitive research on pacing: why changing your behavior too quickly in response to feedback can make it feel inauthentic, even when it's exactly the change people asked for. Arlene's framework for HR and talent leaders: how to design programs that deliver both types of self-awareness, build in follow-through, and track behavior change, not just completion. Your action for the week: the one piece of feedback worth turning into one specific behavior for the next 60 days. Whether you're a leader working on your own growth, an HR partner designing leadership development programs, or someone who just wants to turn insight into real change, this episode is full of research-backed strategy and practical moves you can start using this week. Mentioned in this episode: Tasha Eurich's research on self-awareness Marshall Goldsmith's article Leadership Is a Contact Sport Research from the Academy of Management on the pacing of behavior change Ready to turn awareness into growth? If you're a leader navigating a transition, building the next version of your leadership, or an HR leader designing development for your organization, let's talk. Sponsored by Enelra Talent Solutions, LLC - Your Go-To Coaching Partner. In this Essentials episode, Arlene sits down with Dr. Nila Sinha to unpack the mindsets that help us see possibilities where others see limits. Dr. Nila Sinha is a leadership coach, consultant, and professor who has spent her career helping people deepen their self-awareness and discover the mindsets that unlock their best work and most fulfilling lives. Through her work across two decades at her company SHA Solutions, she has worked with leaders at Fortune 500 companies around the world as well as students at the SMU Cox School of Business. Whether you're leading a business, managing a team, navigating a career transition, or just trying to move forward in your own life, this conversation is for you. Join us as we explore: Why innovation isn't really about products or technology, and why Nila defines it more broadly as the ability to see possibilities where others see limits and then act on them. The fire analogy that reframes how mindsets work: certain mindsets nurture a new idea like a small flame, but those same mindsets can smother it once the idea is ready to grow. The growth mindset, and how shifting from "this is just how I am" to "let me lean in and see what I can learn" gives you agency to keep moving forward, even after a setback. The resource mindset, and why the question "what can we do with what we have today?" opens more doors than the more familiar "here's why we can't." The narrative mindset, and how the stories we tell ourselves quietly drive our behavior. Sometimes the most powerful shift starts with asking "what else could be true?" Nila's honest story of using the narrative mindset on herself when self-doubt showed up as she began building this body of work. Arlene's "red pill" reflection on why, once you see a mindset clearly, you can't unsee it, and how that awareness alone can start to shift your default patterns. Whether you're facing a hard decision at work, feeling stuck in a pattern of thinking that isn't serving you, or just want practical tools to lead yourself and others through change, this conversation is full of research-backed insight and practical moves you can start using this week. Sponsored by Enelra Talent Solutions, LLC - Your Go-To Coaching Partner. In this episode, Arlene Pace Green sits down with her dear friend Dr. Brian Crewe for a personal conversation about their own experiences with burnout. Both are executive coaches who help leaders navigate burnout every day. Both are industrial-organizational psychologists who know the research inside and out. And both, at different points in their careers, missed it completely in themselves. If you're a high performer, a leader, or someone who keeps saying yes because you care and you deliver, this conversation is for you. Dr. Brian Crewe is a certified leadership and life coach with a PhD in industrial and organizational psychology. For more than 20 years, he has been helping organizations, leaders, teams, and individuals improve themselves and their performance. He's a coach with Enelra Talent Solutions and also owns his own firm, Change in Process. Brian and Arlene have known each other since middle school, and this conversation carries the honesty that comes with that kind of long friendship. Join us as we explore: The World Health Organization's definition of burnout as a syndrome from chronic workplace stress that shows up in three ways: exhaustion, mental distance and cynicism, and a drop in how effective you feel in your work. Why the first time Brian burned out, he didn't recognize it at all. He just thought he was getting lazy, procrastinating, and losing his usual excitement about new client work. The feelings that showed up before either of them realized what was happening: resentment toward work they'd signed up for, guilt over not being productive enough, and a strange lack of energy for the people and activities they loved most. Why burnout often gets misdiagnosed as depression, and the single question Brian's counselor asked that helped him name what was actually happening. Arlene's honest story about being burned out for over a year in her corporate role without knowing it, and the moment in Mexico that should have been a warning sign. Why both Arlene and Brian only recognized their burnout after they were coming out of it, and what that means for how high performers should be watching for the signs. Why recovery from real burnout takes 3 to 6 months, not a long weekend or a vacation, and what a counselor told Brian to do to actually start recovering. Why energy is the resource most of us underestimate, more than time, and how that plays into overcommitting to things we can't sustain. The role that guilt plays as a driver into burnout: guilt about productivity for Arlene, guilt about being seen as "too good" for basic tasks for Brian, and guilt about not doing enough for family, friends, and community for so many of us. The systems Brian and Arlene have each put in place to keep from going back: an accountability circle Brian calls his "board of directors," better client boundaries, joy-based work over discipline-based work, and reflection built into the calendar. Arlene's takeaway from the movie Encanto that reframed the whole conversation for her: you are amazing because you are, not because you produce. Whether you're deep in a burnout right now, coming out of one, or noticing the early signs and hoping to catch it before it takes you under, this conversation is full of the kind of honesty you don't usually get from people who help others with this for a living. Sponsored by Enelra Talent Solutions, LLC - Your Go-To Coaching Partner. In this Essentials episode, Arlene Pace Green, Ph.D. sits down with Dianne Armstrong for a research-backed conversation about how to lead change that actually sticks, both in your organization and in your own life. Dianne is a leadership development executive, executive coach, and transformation advisor with more than 30 years of experience inside global Fortune 500 companies including Flex, McKesson, Neiman Marcus, PepsiCo, and Accenture.  She's also the founder of Armstrong Performance Consulting, a coach and talent management partner with Enelra Talent Solutions, and teaches leadership in the Executive MBA program at the University of Texas at Austin. If you're an HR leader, people leader, or anyone responsible for carrying transformation inside your organization, this one is for you. Join us as we explore: Why the average employee went from navigating 2 planned enterprise changes per year in 2016 to 10 by 2022, and why employee willingness to get behind those changes has been cut roughly in half over that same stretch. The neuroscience of change: why our brains are wired to resist rewiring, why change actually lights up the same pain mechanisms as physical pain, and what that means for how leaders communicate about transformation. Why some of the behaviors we're trying to change are actually serving a purpose for us as coping mechanisms, and why self-compassion and curiosity often unlock more progress than judgment or willpower. Why women in particular deprioritize their own well-being and take on outsized emotional labor at work and home, and how that affects our capacity for personal change. The specific mistakes leaders make when driving organizational change, including getting ahead of their teams on the change curve and losing momentum right when the rest of the organization is just starting to move. Why persistence is the most underestimated skill in change leadership, and why you'll need to communicate the same message 17 times over 18 months, even when you're bored of hearing yourself say it. Why the "change of the moment" approach quietly punishes your early adopters and rewards the people who sit on the fence, and how it teaches your organization to wait out every future change. The power of involving more people through employee action teams and change networks, and why autonomy, control, and pride drive better adoption than top-down directives. Dianne's clearest explanation of the change curve using the example of getting a new puppy, and how leaders can shorten and shallow the "valley of despair" for their teams. Why tying change to a meaningful "why" is the anchor for both personal and organizational transformation, and how to make that why emotionally real for the people you're leading. Whether you're in the middle of leading a transformation right now, coaching leaders who are, or trying to make a change in your own life, this conversation is full of research-backed insight and practical moves you can start using this week.
