Linux Weekly Daily Wednesday

KDE is 30, and Plasma 6.8 is going all-in on Wayland! Someone's got WINE running on OpenBSD, and it's playing Hollow Knight and The Witcher 3 Enhanced Edition. Linux 7.3 has some goodies for gamers, including better VRAM management for AMD GPUs, new controller support, and a bunch of other kernel tinkering. And Microsoft Defender is coming to Linux desktops, because nothing says freedom like enterprise compliance.Patreon: https://patreon.com/lwdw/Timestamps:00:00 Intro03:56 Steam Next Fest 13:13 30 years of KDE22:00 WINE gaming on OpenBSD31:47 Linux Kernel 7.338:28 Windows Defender for Linux desktopTopics:Happy 30th KDE!https://9to5linux.com/happy-30th-birthday-kdeWINE 4 BSDhttps://marc.info/?l=openbsd-ports&m=179236125692175&w=2#5Linux Kernel 7.3https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/10/linux-7-3-featuresLinux Defendor https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoftdefenderatpblog/secure-linux-desktops-with-microsoft-defender/4560822

Today on LWDW, we’re talking about Linux Mint’s move to an annual release cycle, with Mint 27 ‘Adrien’ bringing a host of new features and applications later this year. We’ll look at the eth68, an unusual Linux audio interface that uses Ethernet to deliver low-latency audio, and discuss the possibility of getting one into the studio for testing. Steam has hit a new record of 43.5 million concurrent users, and I’ve been checking out the free-to-play AION 2. Finally, in Slice of Pi, we’ll take a look at Axera’s AX8860 AI chip, a 128GB Arm-based system that aims to challenge NVIDIA’s DGX Spark.A video version of the show is available to Patrons, along with the Extended Chaos podcast featuring over an extra hour of LWDW content every week.PatreonDiscordYouTubeTimestamps:00:00 EPIC Game Store Linux beta 21:30 Linux Mint 27 Adrien27:44 ETH-88 Linux-first ethernet audio interface 39:40 43.5 million Steam users 48:22 Axera AZ8860 takes on the DGX Spark Topics:EPIC Game Launcher for Linuxhttps://interfacinglinux.com/community/linuxgaming/installing-official-epic-game-launcher-beta-on-linux/#post-1327Linux Mint updatehttps://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/10/linux-mint-27-adrien-due-at-christmas/ampETH-68 Network Interfacehttps://naturalsystems.io/eth68Steam 43.5 Million concurrent usershttps://www.techpowerup.com/353605/steam-tops-43-5-million-concurrent-players-new-all-time-highAxera AX8860 DGX Killer https://wccftech.com/axera-ax8860-ai-chip-beat-dgx-spark-ai-llms-128-gb-memory-40w-less-cost/

This week, we look at the experimental native Linux port of Bloodborne and check out DroidDeck, an open source app that brings Valve’s official Steam client and Proton to Qualcomm Snapdragon Android handhelds. We also cover the recent price increases for the 2GB variants of the Raspberry Pi 4 and 5, and take a look at OpenPaper L, a new open source 13.3-inch colour E-Ink picture frame.A video version of the show is available to Patrons, along with the Extended Chaos podcast featuring over an extra hour of LWDW content every week.PatreonDiscordYouTubeTimestamps:00:00 Intro04:41 My first Bioshock 07:01 Witching the Spire 09:22 Fixing the Firefox Nova theme 14:24 Installing native-ish Bloodborne on Linux 24:37 Steam on Android with DroidDeck 33:58 2Gb Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 price increases 40:04 13" of E-inkShow Topics:Native Linux port of Bloodborne for PChttps://interfacinglinux.com/community/linuxgaming/installing-bbport-native-linux-port-of-bloodborne-for-pc/Android Steam Deckhttps://droiddeck.app/2GB Pi goes up in pricehttps://www.raspberrypi.com/news/price-increases-for-2gb-raspberry-pi-4-and-raspberry-pi-5/OpenPaper Lhttps://linuxiac.com/openpaper-l-launches-as-a-13-3-inch-open-source-color-e-ink-frame/

This week, we're getting VST3 plugins running directly in OBS and leveling audio aromatically. SteamOS 3.8.28 has landed in the stable channel with a big pile of Mesa, kernel, VRAM, controller, and handheld compatibility updates. F-Droid 2.0 gets a ground-up rebuild, a much nicer UI, better search, and automatic app updates.
