Description

Most podcasts keep politics and spirituality separate. We don’t.

We believe understanding the world requires both, and a willingness to ask deeper questions, practice discernment, and look beyond surface-level narratives to see what’s actually happening beneath the headlines.

This is a truth-seeking podcast for conscious thinkers exploring geopolitics and current culture through a spiritual lens rooted in Vedic philosophy.

What is the 8th Element? It is Oxygen, the breath of life. We cannot live without it. And for the soul’s nourishment and awakening we need this life giving information based on clear thinking and transcendental knowledge.

As a trio of decades long practicing bhakti yogis or Vaisnavas, we unpack hidden truths, challenge power structures, and apply common sense to understand with coherence a rapidly changing world.

So come as you are my friend, prabhus from all walks of life, with sincerity and an open heart. We’ll meet you here every week on Thursday night/Friday morning.

They told him his music was Maya. But when Michael Cassidy (Mangalananda) brought his concerns to Srila Prabhupada, the response was unforgettable: "Let the cows moo." What happens when your spiritual calling challenges the expectations of the people around you? In this special episode of the 8th Element Podcast, Buzz Ryan, Gargs Allard, and India sit down with singer-songwriter Michael Cassidy (Mangalananda), whose groundbreaking devotional album Change of Heart helped introduce a generation to Krishna consciousness through folk, rock, country, and spiritual music. Celebrating 50 years since the release of Change of Heart in 1976, Michael reflects on his extraordinary musical journey, from discovering the Hare Krishna movement in the late 1960s to creating influential devotional albums, navigating the music industry, and remaining committed to his spiritual purpose. In this conversation, we explore: - The remarkable story behind Srila Prabhupada's response to criticism of Michael's music. - How George Harrison, the Beatles, and the Hare Krishna movement shaped his early spiritual journey. - The creation of Change of Heart, Nature's Secret, Beyond Illusion, and Take Me Back. - Why music became a form of devotional service rather than simply entertainment. - The struggles of balancing artistic ambition, financial survival, marriage, and family. - How grief, personal transformation, and decades of experience changed his songwriting. - The difference between repeating spiritual knowledge and expressing genuine realization. - His advice for musicians seeking to create meaningful, authentic spiritual art. Michael also shares stories about working with accomplished musicians, his experiences in Los Angeles and Nashville, and the possibility of a special 50th-anniversary Change of Heart concert. Clancy was charged in connection with the deaths of her three young children in 2023. At trial, her defense argued that severe postpartum mental illness left her not criminally responsible, while prosecutors maintained that her actions were deliberate and premeditated. The 2026 trial ultimately ended in a mistrial after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. But Buzz and India take the conversation beyond the courtroom. What happens when legitimate conversations about women's rights, motherhood, mental health, personal responsibility, and equality collide with ideology? Has modern feminism empowered women—or have some of its more radical expressions created new expectations and contradictions around marriage, motherhood, men, and family? Buzz and India unpack the Lindsay Clancy case through the larger cultural lens of radical feminism, examining how society talks about accountability when gender, mental illness, motherhood, and tragedy intersect. This Decode isn't about reducing an extraordinarily complex case to a political talking point. It's about asking difficult questions: How should mental illness affect our understanding of responsibility? Are men and women judged by the same cultural standards? What happens when ideology begins shaping how we interpret tragedy? And where should compassion end and accountability begin? The case remains unresolved: Lindsay Clancy's 2026 trial ended without a verdict, and subsequent proceedings have continued over whether she will face another trial. Watch as Buzz and India Decode the case, the arguments surrounding it, and the deeper cultural battle underneath the headlines. Join the conversation in the comments: Can society acknowledge severe mental illness while still having an honest conversation about responsibility and accountability?
What happens when questioning the accepted narrative costs you your career, relationships, sense of belonging—and eventually forces you to question almost everything? In this episode of The 8th Element Podcast, Buzz and Gargs sit down with Danishta, a second-generation Hare Krishna devotee whose lifelong willingness to ask uncomfortable questions took on new meaning during the COVID era. Danishta shares how growing up visibly different taught him early what it felt like to stand outside the crowd. Years later, that same independent streak collided with institutional authority when his decision surrounding COVID vaccination ultimately disrupted his physical-therapy education and changed the direction of his life. But this conversation goes much deeper than COVID. The discussion explores groupthink, media and institutional trust, spiritual authority, conspiracy labels, the difference between skepticism and discernment, and a surprisingly difficult question: If you're willing to question everything, when do you finally stop questioning? The conversation eventually turns inward toward Krishna consciousness, Guru–Shastra–Sadhu, Danishta's search for absolute truth, Prabhupada's teachings, controversial changes to Prabhupada's books, and the challenge of preserving spiritual teachings across generations. Underneath all the controversial subjects is a deeply human conversation about faith, identity, belonging and the courage to examine what you believe—even when doing so comes with a price. Chapters 00:00 Meet Danishta: The "Man of Steel" 03:42 The Decision That Changed His Career 06:07 Growing Up Different as a Hare Krishna 08:05 When He Started Questioning the Media 10:17 The Cost of Speaking Your Mind 15:07 Family, Groupthink & the COVID Decision 19:22 Questioning Spiritual Leaders During COVID 22:14 When Institutional Trust Started Breaking Down 30:27 "Question Authority"—But Is There a Limit? 35:39 When Does the Search for Truth Stop? 39:32 Guru, Shastra & Sadhu: How Do You Know What's True? 42:36 Why Are We Afraid to Ask Questions? 43:51 The "Conspiracy Theorist" Label 55:46 Movies, Media & Hidden Messages 1:01:30 Prabhupada and the Moon Landing 1:03:42 Searching Different Religions for Truth 1:07:47 The Happiest Period of Danishta's Life 1:11:17 Losing His Path—and Searching for What's Next 1:13:15 "Who Am I?"
