Cameron Borg, MSc, is a science writer and host of the Ricci Flow Nutrition Podcast, with a Master's degree in Medical Science majoring in Nutrition from The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where he completed his thesis with the Zubarev lab on biological isotope fractionation. He explains that tissues across species appear to regulate their carbon-13 and nitrogen-15 content toward a preferred set point. This challenges ecology's long-held "static delta" assumption. He also explains how C4 sugars from corn and cane leave a detectable carbon-13 signature in human red blood cells, and why synthetic supplements may differ isotopically from natural forms. We also discuss the limits of the calorie in complex systems, the Energy Resistance Principle, questions about ATP's "high-energy" bond, and how shade, near-infrared light, and blue twilight shape the light signals your body receives. You'll come away with a systems-level view of nutrition and light, plus practical ideas for aligning your environmental signals.FULL SHOW NOTES: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10Oonu70xuSpgM82TKQt4q5fnEr19N-HlBsu-0KeD1Kk/edit?usp=sharingSponsor: Daylight Computer https://buy.daylightcomputer.com/JONATHANJ , Code: JONATHANJ About this guest:Substack: https://ricciflow.substack.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ricciflownutrition/ Podcast/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@RicciFlowNutrition Website: https://www.ricciflownutrition.comFind Jonathan Jarecki:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonathanjarecki/Subscribe to the Newsletter: https://jonathanjarecki.substack.com/Website: jonathanjarecki.comTimestamps:00:00 Intro02:51 Cameron Borg04:07 The Journey of Understanding Science; Zubarev lab Experience09:14 Sponsor: Daylight Computer Co.10:32 The Subjectivity of Science15:18 Isotopes 101, Isotopic Ecology, Homeostasis, Tissue Specificity24:41 Deuterium and Its Interactions with Other Isotopes33:21 Isotopic Distribution Among Different Foods37:12 Supplements, Isotopic Composition, and the Complexity of Life41:13 Rethinking the Calorie: Emergent Parts, Complicated vs. Complex45:04 Applying the "Calorie" From a Complicated to a Complex System47:41 Weight Management and The Energy Resistance Principle50:42 Weight Loss: Eating Less Food Reduces Energy Resistance54:08 Understand Signal Coupling For Health59:41 Signal Hierarchy vs. Heterarchy01:00:28 The Role of Sunlight in Health01:00:53 Sunlight01:02:12 ATP May Not Have The "High-Energy Phosphate Bond"01:07:59 Human Light Harvesting For Biological Energy01:14:13 Light Spectrum Under Shade01:18:28 Blue Light: Rethinking Nighttime Light Exposure01:27:06 Closing Thoughts: Return to Nature01:30:33 Support, YouTube, Spotify & Apple Follow, Reviews & Feedback, Social Media, Substack Newsletter
In this episode, my guest is Dr. Roger Seheult, MD, is a physician quadruple board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine, an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine, an Assistant Clinical Professor at Loma Linda University, and the co-founder of MedCram. Today, he explains why vitamin D levels strongly predicted COVID-19 outcomes while vitamin D supplementation largely failed to reproduce the benefit, and makes the case that vitamin D is a marker for sunlight exposure rather than the primary mechanism behind it. He describes the near-infrared portion of sunlight which penetrates through the human body, and the hypothesis that it stimulates melatonin produced inside mitochondria, where it acts as a local antioxidant. We discuss randomized trials of infrared light in hospitalized and ICU patients, why greenery reflects infrared while concrete absorbs it, the Green Heart Louisville tree-planting trial, evidence that bright light at night predicts higher mortality, the NEWSTART framework, the Adventist Health Study, and published research on faith, forgiveness, and health. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Sean Cain, PhD, a Harvard Medical School-trained expert in the impact of light on the human circadian system, a Matthew Flinders Professor at Flinders University, and Co-Founder and CEO of Circadian Health Innovations. Today, he discusses how people differ more than fiftyfold in how sensitive their circadian systems are to evening light, that nearly half of modern homes are bright enough at night to suppress melatonin by fifty percent, and that most of us have no conscious awareness of any of it. We discuss the large observational studies he and his team have published linking bright days and dark nights to depression, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mortality, as well as his research on impaired light sensitivity in depression and why the amplitude of your circadian rhythm may matter more than its timing. We also discuss MiEye, the wearable light sensor his team developed, and practical changes to home and daytime lighting that anyone can make tonight.CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL SHOWNOTESThis includes all other resourcesSponsor: Brighter Lamphttps://getbrighter.com/?sjram=P2jrTbowzJOdCode: JONATHANJ Subscribe to the newsletter: https://jonathanjarecki.substack.com/?utm_campaign=profile_chipsTimestamps 00:00 Intro03:54 Dr. Sean Cain04:42 Dr. Cain's Love for Science and Research10:25 Understanding Circadian Rhythms: Anatomy and Function10:56 Setting the stage: Circadian Biology, Rhythms, SCN, ipRGCs16:20 Light, Circadian Entrainment, Mechanisms19:57 High Sensitivity and Interindividual Variability in the Response of the Circadian of the Human Circa22:02 Individual Sensitivity to Light and Circadian Disruption27:22 Home Lighting, Sunset, LEDs, Fluorescents, Incandescents27:37 Home Lighting and Its Effects on Circadian Health33:46 Tools: circadian friendly home lighting39:24 Population health outcomes; UK BioBank39:29 Psychiatric Disorders47:52 SPONSOR: Brighter Lamp49:34 The Link Between Light Exposure and Mental Health01:04:18 Light Exposure and Longevity: Key Findings01:09:45 The Importance of Daylight for Health01:17:41 Understanding Circadian Rhythms and Light Exposure01:17:52 The Impact of Light on Mood and Self-Perception01:23:39 Innovations in Circadian Health: My Eye Device01:34:15 Jet Lag Management and the Jet Lag App01:39:09 Support, YouTube, Spotify & Apple Follow, Reviews & Feedback, Social Media, Substack Newsletter
My guest is my mom, Rosebud, a mother of four who spent fifty years building a life around preventative medicine. In this episode she tells her whole story: growing up with no money in Ozone Park, Queens; losing her father at three, her brother at thirty-two, and her first husband at twenty-five; and how that grief turned into a set of convictions about how she wanted to raise her children. We talk about the plant-based, vegetable-heavy way we ate growing up, the natural births, the years she spent learning from John Galamaga, and the pushback she took for doing things differently. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Glen Jeffery, PhD, a professor of neuroscience at University College London's Institute of Ophthalmology and a leading expert on how light interacts with mitochondria to shape health and aging. Today, he discusses how red and near-infrared light penetrate deep into the body and improve mitochondrial function and overall health. We also discuss how detrimental modern indoor life has become and why expensive red light panels are likely unnecessary and possibly harmful.By the end, you'll understand sunlight as a biological input your body evolved to depend on and the low-cost, practical steps you can take to get more of it.FULL SHOW NOTES HERE: https://l1nk.dev/bjuu235 Sponsor: Shadowmap https://app.shadowmap.org/?ref=jonathan&discount=JONATHANJ Code: JONATHANJ Sponsor: Ra Opticshttps://www.raoptics.com/JONATHANJ Code: JONATHANJ About this guest:Academic Profile: https://profiles.ucl.ac.uk/7465 Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=UYlObKkAAAAJ&hl=en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/glen-jeffery-441a2b1b/ Timestamps:00:16 Intro02:46 Dr. Glen Jeffery03:14 Love for Science, Undergraduate04:24 Tiina Karu, Photobiomodulation Origins, Mechanisms 06:14 Mechanisms, Cytochrome C Oxydase, Nanowater, Electron Flow10:56 Cytochrome C Oxydase, Extra-Pineal Melatonin, Oxidative Stress12:45 Gerald Pollack, Exclusion Zone (EZ) Water13:45 Red/IR Light Passes Through the Human Body; Optics18:09 Red Light On Fruit Flies; Lifespan, ATP Production21:15 Human Epidemiology; Sunlight, Lifespan, All-Cause Mortality22:35 Sponsor: Shadowmap23:30 Features and Benefits of Shadow Map25:02 Incandescents, lifespan, and more25:02 Incandescent Light Produces the Oldest Flies; Broad Band IR on Lifespan25:48 Incandescent Light Bulbs, Vision 28:19 Evolutionarily Conserved Mitochondria29:03 Long-Wavelength Light & Blood Glucose; Mitochondria32:50 Unpublished CGM Data; Long-Wavelength Light & Blood Glucose36:57 Are Red Light Panels Harmful?; Light Intensities, Precautions, Mitigations43:56 Why Do We See Beneficial Effects From Long-Wavelength Therapy? 46:43 Short-Wavelength Blue Light, Mitochondria, Mechanism49:08 The Built Environment, Actionable Steps 52:24 Sponsor: Ra Optics54:24 Flicker55:24 Retinal Health, Blue Light, Red/IR Light59:09 Clinical Trial for Mitochondrial Disease; Ptosis, Red Light01:02:31 Biophotons, Mitochondrial Communication, Red/NIR on Biophotons 01:13:54 Support, YouTube, Spotify & Apple Follow, Reviews & Feedback, Social Media, Substack Newsletter
