The Lich's Tale: A Faerûn Lorecast — Episode 64
A plain book tied with green cord leads Erilian Kantonine toward Candlekeep and a difficult question: what do the keepers of knowledge owe the people who need it?
From the gift at the gate to the Avowed, the Endless Chant, Miirym's long guardianship and a djinni imprisoned in a book, Erilian considers the difference between protecting a collection and fulfilling its purpose. The journey reaches Tashluta before returning to the reader waiting outside a guarded door.
This is a reflective exploration of custodianship, consent, access and evidence. The village well book and illustrative scenes are original show fiction. Companion research notes distinguish source material, older accounts and interpretation; adventure outcomes are not invented as history.

Two letters. The same signature. Opposite commands.
Erilian Kantonine follows Manshoon from the council struggles of Zhentil Keep into the Black Network, the catastrophe of the Manshoon Wars, the vampire history of Westgate, and the competing interests of Waterdeep. Along the way, he asks what survives when a wizard prepares another body—and what the people around him owe to a master determined to return.
This telling distinguishes the different Manshoons, keeps uncertain histories uncertain, and looks beyond the famous wizard to the servants, defenders, and ordinary households affected by his ambitions. The two letters and illustrative scenes are original dramatic framing; source and chronology notes accompany the local delivery.

What does it mean to remain when a lifetime of service should be over?
In the hidden stacks beneath Waterdeep, Erilian considers the elven guardians who accept a duty beyond death. Through Cormanthyr's watchers, teachers, and wardens, he follows the lives of Synnorha Durothil, the Guardian Paramours, Braerinda, and the Srinshee. In the Vale of Lost Voices, the story of the Audark survivors reveals a more severe form of devotion: silent guardians who cannot leave the sacred forest they protect.
An exploration of memory, grief, inheritance, and what the living owe those who keep watch for them.
Next: Manshoon and the problem of surviving yourself.
Historical lore is distinguished from Erilian's reflections and explicitly imagined scenes. Research editions, access limits, and sources are recorded in the companion Sources.md. This episode does not assert that every historical guardian remains active today.

Listener Joe Biggs asked for the cold tundra bogs of his campaign. Erilian takes a water-stained map north: through difficult crossings and workable ground, past the shadow of Castle Perilous, and into the lives of people facing the Warlock Knights' demands.
We visit the Bottomless Bogs, Moortown, Palischuk and Fugue, asking how season, trade, power and local knowledge shape a journey. The telling distinguishes the 1359 DR frame of *The Bloodstone Lands* from the 1480 DR Vaasa article in *Dungeon* #177. Imagined households and adventure ideas are identified as original illustrations.
Thank you, Joe. Send places, people and mysteries from your own campaigns to [email protected]. Next: Sardior, the Ruby Dragon.

Why does one tradition preserve a living Ruby Dragon and another connect his fate to a shattered beginning? At a listener's request, Erilian visits Sardior's court, the five Thanes, Seradess and Blithen, obsidian dragons, scholarly servants, and the aleithian dwarves before comparing later First World beliefs with older dragon creation stories.
The episode separates edition-specific lore, attributed belief, original interpretation, and invented illustrative scenes. The Blithen companion provides a partial explanation of Seradess's fall; her corruption's method remains unknown. Original magazine scans and the full Fizban book were not obtained; detailed reading limits and linked sources are in Sources.md.
