Description

Welcome to Legal Imposters - the podcast for lawyers who are making Imposter Syndrome their strength and using it to their advantage in their career. If you've ever felt like a fraud or that your success is down to luck; if you ever have that fear that you're going to be found out - you're in the right place.
I'm Caroline Flanagan, ex-lawyer and proud Imposter, and I'm here to show you that Imposter Syndrome isn't here to hold us back.
It's here to distinguish us.
To elevate us.
We were never meant to blend in with those who feel entitled to be here
We are not interested in being excluded.
We don't need permission to succeed.
We are Legal Imposters.
We are meant to stand out.
Our value lies in who we are and what makes us unique.
We're changing what it means to succeed in this industry.
We don't succeed in spite of our Imposter Syndrome. We succeed because of it.

Welcome to the club.

You don't need anything groundbreaking to get unstuck. What you need is Awareness. Most people underestimate it. Writing it off as too simple and too obvious. But awareness is one of the most powerful tools you'll ever use — because it's the only thing that turns a problem you can't see into a problem you can actually solve. Once you can name something, you can anticipate it, avoid it, prepare for it or even solve it. Before that, you're just reacting to something you don't fully understand. I learned this with my own imposter syndrome. From the moment I named it, I started to recognise it. I noticed how and when it showed up. This led to an understanding of what was actually causing it: I'd forgotten who I am. Once I understood that, I stopped chasing quick fixes. I solved it at the level it actually lives — identity. I remembered who I am. I've watched the same shift happen for clients. I've watched the same shift happen for clients. One Be The First 1:1 client, a partner navigating firm politics, was pulled into a conversation with another partner that felt like being told what to do by an equal. Her reaction was instant and reactive — she shut down, refused to engage. Once she became aware of that pattern, she did something completely different. She reached out. Another client, inside Be The First Membership, felt anxious walking into every meeting. Awareness told her something simple: it's normal for this to be there. Her body doesn't know the difference between real danger and a boardroom. So she stopped resisting it. She remembered who she is. She showed up, spoke up, and contributed. That's the power of awareness.  In this episode, I walk through what awareness actually is, how it works, and exactly where to start. You're not looking for a magic wand. You're looking for the first step. It's closer than you think. Listen to Episode 142 now on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. P.S. If you're a Black lawyer wondering whether imposter syndrome is quietly running the show, grab the free download — the secret signs of Imposter Syndrome every black lawyer should know — and start exactly where this episode leaves off: aware, not stuck. I want to talk about doubling your confidence in 30 days. Can I actually prove that number? No. But what I'm about to share has worked for me, and it's worked for client after client inside Be The First — so I'm confident it'll work for you.   Do you find yourself preparing twice as much as everyone else, just so you feel ready? Rewriting the same email four times before you let yourself send it? Staying quiet in the meeting because you're not 100% certain you're right and doubt you have value to add Turning down the opportunity before anyone gets the chance to turn you down first?   If any of that sounds familiar, you're in the right place. That's Imposter Syndrome — as evidenced by the overworking, the overthinking, the playing small, the quiet self-sabotage that's holding you back without you realising. But here's the thing I want you to know: Imposter Syndrome isn't a problem you need to fix. It's just a question about identity you haven't fully answered yet. The confidence you get when you do is the no.1 factor that matters when you're junior, and matters increasingly as you get more senior. Yes you can progress without it. But it gets harder, not easier. The rooms get whiter. The doubt gets louder. So in today's episode, I'm giving you one shift. Not a mantra, not a hack, not something you'll forget by Wednesday. A simple exercise to double your confidence in 30 days: List 100 successes. It's simple, yes. Easy? No. Worth the discomfort you feel when you go to do it? 100%. One client told me she skipped this section in my book Be The First, because she didn't think she could do it. (Now I'm walking her through it inside Be The First Membership and her confidence is growing on the spot). You'll probably hit resistance too - I can't think of 100. I don't have that many. This feels impossible. That's completely normal — it's not a sign you're doing it wrong, it's the muscle actually building. That resistance is the whole point of the exercise, not a reason to stop. I walk through exactly how to do it and what to do the moment that resistance shows up, in this week's episode of Legal Imposters. Double your confidence in 30 days. All you need is a notebook, and a pen. Listen to episode 141 on iTunes or your favourite podcast player.   P.S. Inside Be The First Membership, I give you the coaching and the prompts to find your 100 successes as part of the proven process that builds confidence built to last your whole career, not just this month. You did everything right. You identified the sponsor. You built the relationship. You made the ask. And the answer was still no. That stings. It's normal to replay it — to wonder what you missed, to assume it was the strategy. But sponsorship isn't only won with strategy. It's won with belief. A belief isn't a fact. It's a thought you've chosen — adopted, imposed, or built deliberately. It's the filter you see the world through. And here's why that matters: what you believe shapes how you feel. How you feel shapes what you do. What you do creates your result. Believe you have nothing to add, and you'll stay quiet in the room that could have made the case for you. The silence becomes the proof of the very thing you feared. Three beliefs quietly cost lawyers their sponsor, every time. I don't believe in myself. It sounds like needing someone else to confirm you're ready. It looks like waiting for permission you'll never receive. Try instead: I'm enough. I'm ready. I'm partner material. I don't believe in them. It sounds like judging the offer before it's made, staying guarded, keeping people at arm's length. Try instead: they want to support me. I don't believe in the system. It sounds like "places like this weren't built for people like me" — and it's not wrong. But it isn't the whole story. Try instead: this place needs someone like me. I'm the one they're looking for. None of these beliefs were wrong to have felt. They're just not the ones that get you sponsored. This week's episode walks through all three — where they come from, how you know you're standing in one, and what to choose instead. And on Monday, I'm running a free training, How To Win A Sponsor, where we put it into practice. Click here to Register. Talk soon, Caroline P.S. Sponsorship is one of the things I teach inside Be The First Group Coaching — how to build the relationships that actually convert into advocacy, not just access. It's for mid-to-senior Black lawyers with partnership in their sights. Enrolment for the September 2026 cohort opens Monday 24th August 2026. Places are limited. You've been telling yourself it's too soon. Or too late. Junior enough that BD can wait. Senior enough that you've already missed the boat. Neither is true. Ask most lawyers when the right time to start BD is, and you'll get one of three answers. Not yet — I'm too junior, nobody wants to hear from me. Not yet — I need partner first, then I'll have the credibility. Too late — I should have started years ago, so what's the point now. I hear all three. None of them hold up. BD is relationship building and those relationships take time to build — which is exactly why the moment to start is always now. If you're junior, you've already got a ready-built network sitting in your contacts list. Don't let it go cold. If you're senior, your credibility is already established, and your network is bigger and warmer than you think. A cold DM from a senior associate lands very differently to one from a trainee. If you're thinking you'd rather focus on the legal work because the relationship building feels hard, don't worry. Business development is a skill, not a personality trait. You learn it the same way you learned everything else - by getting started, having a strategy and course-correcting as you go. As skills go, the sooner you develop this one the better. The lawyers who get promoted are the ones who can show they've contributed to the business of the firm, not just the practice of the law. In this week's episode of Legal Imposters, I break down why BD matters at every stage, the three misconceptions keeping good lawyers on the sidelines, how much time it actually needs, and why a strategy beats throwing spaghetti at the wall.   P.S. Inside Be The First Group Coaching, I give you the tools to turn all this into results — a full BD strategy, the BD Tracker to keep you consistent, and coaching to help you convert your pipeline into real, paying clients. Enrolment for the September 2026 class opens 17 August. Save the date in your calendar and keep listening for details.
There's the work you do. Then there's the number attached to it. Alot of senior Black lawyers can tell you, in detail, how good their work is. Ask them their utilisation rate, their WIP, their BD conversion rate — and the fluency disappears. It shows up in small ways first. You're behind on your time recording. You assume the hours you're putting in are "enough." You're constantly being chased for your numbers instead of leading with them. You believe the promotion is owed to you because of how hard you've worked. It's not that the hard work doesn't matter. It's that hard work was never the whole conversation. Here's the truth nobody tells you early enough: every decision your firm makes about you is a numbers decision. Yes, as a junior, you were judged on the quality of your work. But the more senior you get, the more that shifts — until the quality of your numbers, as far as the partnership is concerned, is the quality of your work If "I'm not a numbers person" just came to mind, that's expected. It's also not true. It's just a thought. So choose a new one and adopt it as your identity: I am good with numbers. In this episode, I walk through exactly which numbers to know — billable hours, utilisation rate, invoicing, billing, WIP and receivables, business generated and referrals, your BD conversion rate — and the tracking system that makes staying fluent in them automatic, not another thing to remember. Know your numbers, and you become more valuable. More valuable makes you more promotable. Listen to the full episode now P.S. Inside Be The First Coaching Programme, you learn to know your numbers and articulate your value in language your firm already understands. It's built for the mid-to-senior level Black lawyer who want to progress. Enrolment for the September class opens soon — book a free strategy call with me to talk through your next steps.
