It is a podcast exploring the powerful connections between sport, leadership, faith, education, and personal growth. Through coaching reflections, athlete stories, leadership lessons, and meaningful conversations, the podcast examines how experiences on the court can shape character, purpose, resilience, and service beyond the game itself. Whether you are an athlete, coach, teacher, parent, or leader, Beyond the Scoreboard offers insights that extend far beyond wins and losses, focusing on the development of people, the impact of mentorship, and the lessons that sport teaches about life.

This episode starts with the Parable of the Two Sons and a simple idea: saying the right thing and actually doing it are not the same. Then we turn to two major women’s basketball results from Thursday. McMaster beat Saskatchewan by one, 75–74, after Saskatchewan held an eight-point fourth-quarter lead. Saskatchewan had some positive signs with its new group, but the late-game execution was not good enough. The bigger upset came in Calgary, where Mount Royal beat UBC 63–54. UBC shot 28.1% from the field, 15% from three, committed 24 turnovers, had only five assists, and scored just eight points in the fourth quarter. Those numbers raise serious questions about offensive organization, decision-making, and what identity this team is building under the current staff. ubc mount royalFaith. Coaching. Basketball.
Preparation is easy to talk about. Pressure shows whether it was real. This episode begins with the Parable of the Ten Virgins and a simple coaching question: when the moment arrives, are you actually ready? On the women’s basketball side, we look at Saskatchewan’s first major exhibition test with a new group and ask whether the program’s championship standard is already carrying over. We also break down the Calgary tournament featuring UNB, UBC, Mount Royal, and Trinity Western, with a sharper look at what each program should be showing at this stage.Saskatchewan is trying to prove its standard is bigger than one roster. UNB is trying to show last year’s national-final run can become sustainable. UBC is being evaluated on whether the current staff is beginning to shape the program in its own image. Mount Royal is being challenged to show that years of development are finally becoming meaningful results.Faith. Coaching. Basketball.
This episode looks at what can happen when experience, authority, and control slowly start replacing humility in coaching.Using Luke 18:9–14, the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, we explore what leadership should look like when working with assistant coaches, administrators, players, and the wider basketball community. We also talk about the responsibility coaches have to keep developing players outside the top five or six, especially once rotations become clear. Then we turn to this year’s U SPORTS recruiting numbers: 235 announced women’s recruits and 282 announced men’s recruits — 517 players in total.Where do all of these players go? What responsibility does a coach carry after recruiting them? And how honest should programs be about roster size, opportunity, development, and realistic pathways?Faith. Coaching. Basketball.
This episode looks at forgiveness, accountability, and trust through the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. In coaching, mistakes are unavoidable, especially early in the season. The real leadership question is what happens after the mistake: is it corrected and learned from, or does it become a permanent label? The basketball side previews an important U SPORTS weekend. Alberta and Winnipeg have opportunities to prove more about their consistency on the men’s side, while Saskatchewan, TMU, UNB, UBC, Mount Royal, and Trinity Western headline major women’s tournaments with early national implications.
What happens when a coach knows the game, explains the game, and the players still do not understand it?This episode begins with the Parable of the Sower and a conversation about one of the most important parts of coaching: teaching. Different players process information differently, and good coaching requires more than simply repeating the same message. We look at film, questioning, small-sided games, simple language, repetition, and how coaches can tell whether players have actually learned. Then we move into the U SPORTS weekend. On the women’s side, Calgary goes under the microscope, Windsor and Laval are trending up, and UBCO remains one of the most interesting teams to follow. On the men’s side, Bishop’s gets a closer look, Dalhousie and Mount Royal stand out positively, while UBC and TMU remain firmly on the watch list.Faith. Coaching. Basketball.
