Diving deep on this episode of the National Railway Museum Podcast, Oli Betts is joined by Dr. Michael Bailey, scholar of early railways as they discuss Operation Iron Horse, the mission which successfully salvaged custom-built 19th-century steam train engines from the seabed off the English coast after they were lost at sea during a shipwreck in 1869.
From multi course dinners to limp sandwiches and greasy burgers, how did dining on the railways get to where it is today? That's what Oli wants to know, so this week he is interviewing PHD student Chloe Shields all about the history of dining on the rails- from platform refreshment rooms to restaurant cars to the infamous BR cheese sandwich- this episode is not for the faint hearted or weak-stomached!
