What does the next era of Bitcoin mining actually look like?
On Episode 19 of The Bitcoin Mining Show, Cinco sits down with Bob Burnett, founder of Barefoot Mining and Executive Chairman of OCEAN, for a wide-ranging conversation about Bitcoin mining economics, decentralization, hardware, energy, regulation, pools, and what miners should be thinking about as we move toward the 2028 halving.
Bob brings decades of technology experience to the conversation, including his time as CTO of Gateway during the personal-computer era. He shares how GPU mining first pulled him into proof-of-work, why he ultimately focused on Bitcoin, and how Barefoot Mining developed its approach to mining and energy.
We dig into Bob's “rabbits, horses, and elephants” framework for understanding different classes of Bitcoin miners, along with his distinction between wild and captive mining. From there, the conversation moves into geographic and regulatory risk, community resistance to mining and data centers, energy competition from AI/HPC, and why miners shouldn't become complacent simply because today's political environment may appear favorable.
Bob also explains why the future of mining hardware isn't necessarily a race for the lowest possible J/TH number. Total cost of ownership, reliability, repairability, parts availability, infrastructure and uptime can matter just as much when you're actually operating miners in the real world.
We discuss the used-miner market, ASIC manufacturing, network hashrate, capital constraints, Bob's “Miner's Dilemma,” and why he is already thinking seriously about the economics of the 2028 Bitcoin halving.
The conversation ultimately comes back to decentralization and individual participation. Bob makes the case for becoming a “citizen of Bitcoin” by running a node, participating in mining, and taking a more active role in protecting the network rather than delegating those responsibilities entirely to somebody else.
We close with OCEAN, DATUM, miner-created block templates, direct-from-coinbase payouts, and what OCEAN is building for miners who want greater sovereignty over their participation in Bitcoin.

📚 MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: EXECUTIVE ORDER 6102
During the discussion of government and regulatory risk, Bob references Executive Order 6102, Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1933 order restricting private monetary-gold holdings and requiring most gold to be delivered to the Federal Reserve, subject to exemptions.
Bob's discussion applies the history of EO 6102 as an analogy when considering potential future government intervention involving Bitcoin mining. EO 6102 itself was a gold-related order, not a Bitcoin or mining law.

Winter is coming. Your Bitcoin miner might be your new favorite heater. ❄️⛏️🔥
In Episode 18 of The Bitcoin Mining Show, Joe “Cinco Doggos” Spencer sits down with Kris Konicki from Altair Tech to talk home Bitcoin mining, heat reuse, and getting ready for colder weather.
We kick things off with a recap of the Midwest Bitcoin Summit in Columbus, Ohio: meeting new miners, hands-on demonstrations, and the conversations around waste energy, stranded energy, and putting mining heat to work.
Then we get practical with three miners from Canaan’s Avalon Home Series: the Nano 3S, Mini 3, and Avalon Q. From a little warmth under your desk to heating a living room, workshop, or greenhouse, we discuss where these machines fit—and what to consider before plugging one in.
In this episode:
₿ Midwest Bitcoin Summit highlights and onboarding new miners
₿ Heat reuse, heat-punking, and the value of useful heat
₿ Avalon Nano 3S: a simple starting point for home mining
₿ Avalon Mini 3: thermostat-controlled heating that also mines Bitcoin
₿ Avalon Q: more hashrate for the home miner
₿ Choosing a miner for your office, bedroom, living room, or workshop
₿ Power draw, airflow, noise, and common setup mistakes
₿ Greenhouses, heated floors, filament dryers, and the future of heat reuse
We also talk about why recovering part of an existing heating expense is a different conversation from expecting a miner to erase your electric bill.
And yes, there’s a Bitcoin-heated tortoise enclosure in this conversation. 🐢

REAL LIFE PROOF OF WORK. ₿
David Branscum returns for Part Two—and we’re entering the “Villain Arc.” BIP-110, hard-fork controversy, OCEAN, DATUM, and the debate over who gets to decide what Bitcoin should be.
In Episode 17 of The Bitcoin Mining Show, Joe “Cinco Doggos” Spencer and David move from the mining journey explored in Part One into a candid conversation about conviction, consensus, and what happens when disagreement turns personal.
Cinco explains why he supported BIP-110 signaling—and where the hard-fork rhetoric began to lose him. David shares what drew him to OCEAN and DATUM, why voluntary choice matters, and why respect for Bitcoin’s builders doesn’t mean agreeing with every decision they make.
🔥 IN THIS EPISODE:
• Cinco’s unexpected BIP-110 discussion onstage at Mining Disrupt
• Supporting transaction filtering while respecting network consensus
• Why OCEAN and DATUM appealed to independent miners
• Miner control over block templates and transaction selection
• Signaling, hard-fork proposals, and the limits of persuasion
• The “one true Bitcoin” argument and Bitcoin tribalism
• Personal attacks and communication failures on both sides
• Self-custody, transparency, and industry accountability
• Whether conflict ultimately makes Bitcoin more resilient
• Adoption, “number go up,” and the people building Bitcoin’s future
The “Villain Arc” is tongue-in-cheek. The questions are serious: How do we defend our convictions without demanding everyone follow us? And how do we disagree without losing sight of what brought us to Bitcoin?
💬 Where do you draw the line between advocating for Bitcoin and trying to dictate its direction? Tell us in the comments.

🎙️ THE BITCOIN MINING SHOW | EPISODE 16
DAVID BRANSCUM — PART ONE
This conversation was too good to fit into a single episode.
In Part One of this two-part interview, Joe “Cinco Doggos” Spencer sits down with Texas Bitcoin miner, energy developer, and power maximalist David Branscum for a candid conversation about the life experiences that brought him into Bitcoin.
David’s journey didn’t begin in a boardroom or at a massive mining facility. After losing his businesses, taking a job delivering pizzas during the pandemic, and experimenting with GPU mining at home, he found his way into the industrial Bitcoin mining world.
From there, David went on to work with immersion cooling, behind-the-meter generation, ERCOT, and mining developments ranging from small independent operations to projects measured in hundreds of megawatts.
⚡ IN THIS EPISODE:
✅ How David discovered Bitcoin mining through GPUs and NiceHash
✅ The painful business setback that forced him to rebuild
✅ Going from pizza delivery to industrial Bitcoin mining
✅ His introduction to immersion cooling and large-scale infrastructure
✅ Developing sites for Bitcoin mining and AI compute
✅ Finding land, securing power, and navigating ERCOT
✅ Why David considers himself a “power maximalist”
✅ Bitcoin mining as a buyer of last resort
✅ Why abundant energy is essential for human progress
✅ Behind-the-meter generation and stranded-energy opportunities
✅ The emotional side of surviving Bitcoin bear markets
✅ Why Bitcoin rewards patience, discipline, and personal responsibility
✅ David’s passion for building, learning, art, music, and koi ponds
Whether you operate a single home miner, develop large-scale infrastructure, or simply want to understand the people behind Bitcoin’s hashrate, this episode offers an honest look at the curiosity, setbacks, conviction, and proof of work that shape a Bitcoin miner.
🔥 AND THIS IS ONLY PART ONE.
In Episode 17, David and Cinco enter what they jokingly call the “villain arc” of the conversation: a direct and candid discussion about BIP-110, the Blake2B hard fork, and the controversy surrounding it.
Part Two arrives next Thursday at 8:00 AM Central Time.
