Description

Here you shall find the life of Samuel Pepys, set down in his own words: his business, pleasures, follies, ambitions, quarrels, dinners, theatres, loves, fears, and all the extraordinary business of living through Restoration London. Hear of plague and fire, ships and kings, music and scandal, alongside the thousand little matters a man scarcely imagines will one day become history.

The Samuel Pepys Library presents Pepys’s works read in full, for those who would rather enter his world than merely hear it described.

In which I recount a journey through the country and the city alike, attending to matters of family business, health, and the affairs of the Navy and court, all whilst observing the manners and misfortunes that abounded in these times of sickness and discontent. Amidst plays, company, and conversations both merry and grave, I find my thoughts entwined with worries about estate, health, and the state of the realm, as well as my own too frequent indulgence in the theatres.
In which I set about furnishing my house and attend divers entertainments, all the while managing family affairs and the heavy business of my late uncle’s estate with no small measure of vexation and perplexity. Amidst these domestic and legal burdens, I find solace in music and company, yet remain ever mindful of the disquiet that shadows the settling of inheritance and the conduct of relations.
In which I am deeply engaged in the business of preparing ships and supplies for voyages, balancing duties at the office with visits to family and friends, and partaking in the lively entertainments and social gatherings that grace the days of June. Throughout the month, I observe the tides of court and city life, noting the joys and troubles of the household, the particulars of cloth and music, and the small troubles of ill health and inclement weather, all amid the steady progression of affairs both public and private.
In which I take a journey through several towns and ports, observing the bustle of naval preparations and the company of various officers and friends, whilst attending to my own duties and domestic affairs with a keen eye. The days unfold with visits to courts and taverns, lively discourse on matters both public and private, punctuated by the care of my household and the changing fortunes of those around me.
In which I attend to various matters of state and family, observe the stirrings of public ceremonies and plays, and take frequent pleasure in companionship, music, and the conviviality of good wine. I find myself both amused and troubled by domestic quarrels, the lively follies of city life, and the splendour of the King’s coronation, seeking amusement and solace in journeys and social encounters amidst the bustling preparations and celebrations of the time.
