When is the Standard EMDR Protocol the best fit, and when might a modification better support the work? In this episode, part of our season on the foundations of EMDR practice, we explore the clinical reasoning behind modifications and how case conceptualization informs decisions about when, why, and how to adapt our approach. We break down EMD and EMDr, including the steps involved in each approach and the clinical indications that may make them a useful option. We also discuss other protocols and approaches, including R-TEP, G-TEP, EMDR 2.0, the Flash Technique, the DeTUR Protocol, the Dysfunctional Positive Affect Protocol, and more. The goal isn't to know every EMDR protocol or have a different approach for every client. The Standard Protocol often remains the most comprehensive option. What matters is understanding the clinical reasoning behind our choices and recognizing when an alternative may be appropriate.Want to feel more confident navigating these decisions in your own practice? Christina and I would love to connect with you in consultation and help you think through the why, when, and how of modifying your approach.🌐 Learn more: www.theemdrconsultationcorner.com📱 Follow us on Instagram: @theemdrconsultationcorner🎵 Music by Ken Butler.Hosted by Maraeca Butler, LPC, and Christina Allen, LCPC — EMDRIA Approved Consultants and Certified EMDR Therapists. This podcast is for educational and informational purposes and is not a substitute for clinical training, consultation, supervision, or individualized professional judgment.Transcript generated automatically and may contain errors or inaccuracies. In Part 2 of this two-part conversation, we’re continuing to unpack some of the common pitfalls EMDR therapists encounter along the way, including pushing for a positive cognition that isn’t there yet, becoming too attached to the outcome, overchecking SUD levels throughout reprocessing, and offering developmental repair before a client is ready. We explore how these missteps can impact the course of therapy, what to pay attention to in the moment, and how to recognize when our clinical intentions may not align with what our clients need so we can adjust our approach and get back on track. The EMDR Consultation Corner is a podcast for EMDR therapists who want to deepen their clinical thinking, navigate complex cases, and make more intentional decisions in their work.Hosted by Maraeca Butler, LPC, and Christina Allen, LCPC — EMDRIA Approved Consultants and Certified EMDR Therapists.🎙️ Continue the conversation:Website: www.theemdrconsultationcorner.comInstagram: @theemdrconsultationcornerEnjoying the show? In Part 1 of this two-part conversation, we’re unpacking some of the common pitfalls EMDR therapists encounter along the way, including the challenging transition from being a “talk therapist” to an EMDR therapist, balancing fidelity to the protocol with staying present and attuned to your client, and knowing when to move into reprocessing versus when to spend more time in preparation. We’re also talking about why intellectual insight doesn’t always translate to resolution, what happens when we lose sight of the body, and how missing signs of dissociation can impact the course of EMDR therapy. We explore how to recognize each of these missteps and how to get both ourselves and the client back on track. Hosted by Maraeca Butler, LPC + Christina Allen, LCPC, EMDRIA Approved Consultants and Certified EMDR Therapists. How do we move from a collection of symptoms and experiences to a meaningful EMDR case conceptualization? In this episode, we’re talking about using the AIP model to understand what a client is bringing into the room, what may need to be addressed first, and how different experiences and symptoms may be connected. We also share a practical formula for AIP case conceptualization that can help organize your thinking around symptoms, emotional confusion, past experiences to target, clinical themes, and the adaptations clients have developed in response to trauma. This is part of Season 1, From Foundations to Flexibility, where we’re returning to the foundations of EMDR while exploring how thoughtful clinical judgment and flexibility shape the work.Learn more about us, explore our trainings and learning opportunities, and find out how to work with us in consultation:www.theemdrconsultationcorner.comFollow us on Instagram:@theemdrconsultationcornerNew episodes every Tuesday.Music by Ken Butler.
