In this captivating interview, Londoner Maria takes us on a nostalgia-filled journey through her childhood and life growing up in Covent Garden and Soho from 1951 onward. In this heartfelt interview, 78-year-old Chris shares the extraordinary story of his life, deeply rooted in the changing landscape of London. Born to Greek Cypriot parents who immigrated in the 1920s and 30s, Chris grew up in a family-run South Tottenham restaurant and watched the local community evolve over seven decades. He reflects on a working life that took him everywhere from the BBC to the M1, and ultimately into the heart of his community. His unexpected success as a child actor starting at age 12, landing lead roles, performing at the Mermaid Theater, and working late nights at BBC White City. Working as a bespoke gents tailor in the buzzing, bohemian area of Fitzrovia during his twenties. His varied career path, which included running a dress factory in Wood Green, driving HGVs across the country, and laying glass bricks. Finding a deeply rewarding career late in life, doing patient transport for St. Ann's Hospital for 13 years until retiring at age 73 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Meet Roy, a lifelong Londoner born in 1930 who survived WWII air raids, dodged sea mines in Tottenham, and navigated a world before modern electricity. In this deeply personal oral history, Roy shares the humor, hardship, and immense resilience of working-class Britain during the 20th century. Discover what it took to keep a family of five boys fed during severe wartime rationing—including breeding rabbits in the back garden and bartering with neighbors for sugar and butter. Roy also dives into his time as a National Service army cook (a role he chose simply so he'd never go hungry), standing up to his strict factory bosses, and his lifelong passion for sea fishing.
