Description

We understand the world through stories we tell ourselves, those others tell us, and those that entertain us, seeing ourselves in them even when they don’t contain people like us.

My name is Charlie, and I write Scifi/fantasy as C. E. Dorsett. As a queer writer, I dive into the deep structure of the books, movies, and shows that we love, and would love to take you with me through our fandoms and the works I create. We will dive into these worlds to reveal unseen wonder, discuss theories, and contemplate the elements of good writing. If you have any questions or topics, share them with me. When we are working on a project we have to be honest in each stage of the project.  Stage 1: Be fascinated in development. When you are figuring out what the project is, follow your fascinations and test as many possibilities the story could take and trim off everything that doesn’t make you want to know more or find out what happened next. Stage 2: Fall in love in drafting. It is so important for us to turn off the analytical and judgmental aspects of our personality and have fun. Stage 3: Be ruthless in revision. Turn that judgmental, analytical beast back on and beat the work into shape. Queer people and characters have had to do something that most cis, heterosexual people haven’t, questioned who they are and why they are who they are. This isn’t a knock against cis, heterosexual people, it is just a fact that when you are the same as the default presentation of people in your society, you don’t have to ask yourself any deep questions about your identity. While not all LGBTQIA+ stories are about this kind of soul searching, this aspect of the character’s background will affect who they are, how they act and interact with others, and the decisions they make. It is also important for people to learn to see themselves in the lives of people different from them. Let’s discuss on today’s Project: Shadow. I just finished reading How to Date your Dragon by Molly Harper, and I have to say I enjoyed it, but I wanted more than I got. Dragons, unicorns, tropes, and nostalgia are placebos for connection, but they are no substitute for the real thing. They are signposts of the type of story being told and flares to attract attention. Once they have done their job, there has to be something else to retain that attention and connection. Some try to substitute trauma and pain for the various elements that would actually connect people to the work, the characters, and the setting. Let’s talk about hollow fiction on today’s Project: Shadow. With the events of Star Trek Picard: Star City Rag, it is clear that the series wants to be as different from the series that preceded it as possible to the point where it no longer looks classic Star Trek, which is obviously a thing of the past. Gene Roddenberry and many others who worked on and guided previous series wrote a lot about how the problems that center in the stories need to be universal. If they were transferred to any other genre, the story should be able to happen with minimal changes. Star Trek Picard has rejected this to the point of parody with its focus on Borg technology and Artificial Intelligence is moving it farther away from relatability as the show could be. I have a lot to say about this episode, but I can’t without spoilers, so join me on today’s Project: Shadow. I enjoyed this show. It was interesting and fun. The cast is awesome, and the cinematography was beautiful, but one of the twist left me empty, and made me feel like this show contains damaging anti-queer tropes. I might be a romance writer, and the thought of that terrifies me, but why? Why should I care if I am a secret romance writer? The answer reveals a lot about identity and the creative process. Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet on Apple TV + is a touching, smart, irreverent, series that made me laugh so hard I had to pause it to keep from missing the jokes. A Minimum Viable Product or MVP is an idea from Lean Startup that they tried to elaborate on in their Lean Content course in 2015. I listened to this one again and wondered if you know anything about Storm Constantine, since I found some of the things she did with her Wraeththu universe pretty interesting and cool. There are significant stylistic and thematic differences between the initial trilogy published in the late 80s and the sequel trilogy published in the early 2000s, and she also published some fanworks set in the universe. I hadn't run into that level of chillness and acceptance towards fans or that much change in initial and later books in the same universe before. The change from first person to third person between the two trilogies was a big part of that. Also, magical hermaphrodites that present in pretty queer ways and supplant humanity seemed pretty rad to teenage me. Oh! and the way reproduction works in that series was interesting too. Anyway, thanks again! love the show!

I love this episode. I put off listening because I watched Alien and Aliens as a kid but haven't rewatched as an adult and have been meaning to. Anyway, this audio-dramatization sounds super cool! What's weird is that I actually had a dream as a teen where aliens very similar to those shown in Alien were around on a slightly future or AU earth and were essentially contagious. It was revealed later on in the dream that the conditions caused by the Aliens and the spread of the Alien transformations in humanity were spearheaded and manipulated all along by governmental and corporate powers. Anyway, I thought that was funny, given the plot of this possible other Alien 3 film(genetically driven Alien transformation and cyberpunk bits). Thank you for your podcasts, as always, but the subject matter and enthusiasm in this one made it a really good fit for me.

I'm with you in the extended sand-trout conversation zone. Dune is super fascinating. I am similarly skeptical of this prequel series being anything even close to the vein of what made the Dune books that I got through so great. We'll see, I guess! I'm also not convinced that filmed media can adapt it properly in general BUT I did read that before Star Wars came out and changed the special effects game that adapting Dune as an anime was something that was discussed. I Want That Anime. Limited series style. i want those facial expression closeups and long establishing shots of various landscapes on Dune and some mind bending visual interpretations of what it might be like to sense the fabric of time. I also want the Hayao Miyazaki adaptation of Pippi Longstocking that fell through, but alas, some things just don't come together.

I like this a lot. Returning to and transforming a previous work to make it more your own or more current to the truths and skills that you've been able to unfold since the initial exploration is something that I wish were more of a thing. It has become a bit more common in the visual arts community, and I think that the value has really proven itself there. I hope that other creative people (and even more visual artists, honestly) try this practice. Cool episode.

Exciting! I hope the new format will make it easier and better moving forward for you and the community you've been making space for and nurturing. As for tuesday/wed/thurs suggestions: more regarding the netflix live-action Sabrina would be great! Also, maybe you you could talk about more of the Dark Crystal backstory that wasn't covered in the films? and Dune. Also, thanks for the shout out. I'm not as obsessed with theory episodes as I perhaps made it seem! Theory, recap, worldbuilding, deep dives, anything with heavy emphasis on exploring context and implications is my jam. It all sounds awesome and I'm excited to see where it goes.
