Nick and Kayla discuss their perception on work and retirement. In short, work should be enjoyable and if it doesn't meet your expectations, find something else to do. Retirement is more of a state of mind than it is a status. We're living the life we will probably be living once we are retired. The only difference is our reliance upon our jobs for income. The idea that FIRE enthusiasts want to quit the workforce is simply not true. The truth is that work is simply providing value to society in return for money.  For the show notes please visit: www.firethefamily.com/podcast-episodes/38 Read our book: FIRE The Family: The Ultimate Guide to Achieving Financial Independence With a Family --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/firethefamily/support

We're so excited to be back. As many of you know, we took some time off to relocate our family (geoarbitrage) across the country. We moved from Washington to Texas and this episode is all about the move! Joined by my amazing wife Kayla, we discuss the good, the bad, and some funny stories during our big move. There are some hidden tips if you're considering relocating your family.  We have some big updates launching the coming weeks/months. We're turning half my office into a recording studio and will be video recording each episode and posting it to YouTube. We're looking at an August launch and will mark a new season of the FIRE The Family Podcast. We're so excited to move the podcast in this direction and believe we have a lot of value to give as a happily married couple making intentional decisions with their family, money, and future! I'm so pumped about this episode. I proposed the idea to my lovely wife Kayla to be my new permanent co-host on the FIRE the Family Podcast. She has so graciously agreed and now we're forging a new podcast path together! She has a voice fit for radio by the way! I have so many ideas on where this could go and I want to thank you for sticking with the podcast through a few recent weeks without content. I assure you, we have every intention of creating as much audio content as possible.  We're in the middle of arbitraging from Washington to Texas. That means, selling our home, buying a new home, packing and working and raising the kids and visiting family. We've been so busy that the podcast went onto the back burner for a short time.  In this episode, we talk about moving, selling our house, buying our new house, what we're most excited about and what is difficult about moving away. The economic fallout as a result of COVID-19 has been widespread. It’s affecting far more people than the virus itself and has the potential to throw us into a global recession. By now, the virus is likely wreaking havoc on your retirement accounts. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock as of late, there’s no doubt you’ve heard the news. COVID-19 is in dozens of countries around the world and it’s not likely to slow down anytime soon. https://www.firethefamily.com/home/protect-investments-from-coronavirus --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/firethefamily/support
A financial plan is essential if you want to build wealth for your family. A financial plan is a comprehensive evaluation of your current household income and expenses and projected household income and expenses. A financial plan allows you to project your financial variables into the future to align it with your long term financial goals. By knowing your current financial variables, you can predict future income, assets, and make plans for retirement withdrawals. https://www.firethefamily.com/home/family-financial-plan --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/firethefamily/support

LeanFIRE is the minimalist approach to financial independence retire early. It’s saving just enough money that your minimum expenses are covered in retirement. We all need to reach financial independence at some point in the future. This has become my personal mantra. Whether your aim is to “retire” in your 40’s, 50’s or 60’s. There will be a point in time where you no longer desire or are capable of working for an income. It’s at this point where you need to have enough money saved up to live off of. https://www.firethefamily.com/home/what-is-leanfire --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/firethefamily/support

In March of 2020, Kayla will begin her Master’s in Curriculum & Instruction through Western Governors University (WGU). The same school that I earned my MBA through in 2019. The WGU Master’s in Curriculum and Education is PERFECT for our financial situation because we can cash flow the entire degree. This means that we’re able to pay for her Master’s degree 100% without student loan debt. We’re able to save enough of our income each month to simply pay for it outright. https://www.firethefamily.com/home/cash-flowing-a-masters-degree --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/firethefamily/support
Lifestyle creep is dangerous. It comes on slowly, under the cover of darkness and before you know it, you’re left with little money despite a higher income. Lifestyle creep is also called silent inflation. It’s a phenomenon that’s defined as spending more resources on lifestyle and wants rather than necessities. https://www.firethefamily.com/home/how-to-avoid-family-lifestyle-creep-silent-inflation --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/firethefamily/support
