I am retiring this show as of this episode. I've done 7 episodes in the last 2 years and that is not nearly enough. So I'm focusing on the shows that I can be consistent with. If you like what I've done with Geek of the North, then subscribe to Mike Dell's World (mikedell.com). If you are into podcasting, subscribe to Podcast Help Desk (podcasthelpdesk.com) I also do a company podcast with Todd Cochrane called "Your Podcast by Blubrry" (powerpresspodcast.com)
Mike talks about Cord Cutting. The FCC not requiring TV (or radio) to cover the city of license and how, Up North here, he can't even get his local TV station with a 50foot tall antenna and how that is not right.
I had a little adventure with my Wife's car a while back and put some small dents and scratches in it. We had full coverage insurance on the car so the insurance company decided to total it. Doesn't make any sense to me so I bought it back from the insurance company.
Today I tell the story of trying to program a Ham Radio with my old Windows laptop. Needless to say, it was a lot harder than it should have been!
Throw Away Technology

Throw Away Technology

2016-10-2113:37

Sometimes you get something that lasts a long time, and sometimes you just throw it away. Most technology today is throw away and not repairable. When is the last time you had a TV repaired?
After updating my iPad, it would no longer charge while plugging it into my car. Do you think this is a money grab by Apple, or an honest mistake by some developer.
Today Mike gives a BASIC overview of how Air Traffic Control works. We take a fictional flight on Acme Airlines Flight 123 from Traverse City international Airport (fictional) to Detroit Airport (Fictional). Enjoy! Links mentioned in the show: flightradio.com AirNav.com LiveATC.net
Today Mike talks about No Fly Zones, Temporary Flight Restrictions and what to do if you are intercepted. If you plan on flying your airplane anywhere around the Super Bowl this weekend, be aware!
Time and Clocks

Time and Clocks

Today Mike takes a look at time and the machines and technology used to keep time, plus, a little soapbox :)
Mike talks all about the technology that allows us humans to live in Northern climates in the winter. From heating your house to drilling a whole in the ice to go ice fishing, there is a TON of tech (not high tech, but tech just the same) that makes it possible to not only survive the winter, but thrive in these Northern places. Of course, there is Aviation Technology called a plane ticket send yourself to warmer places :)
Today Mike talks about Amateur Radio (or Ham Radio). This is an off the cuff overview of the different technology you can use as a licensed Amateur Radio Operator in the USA and world-wide.
There is a lot of tech in the way ships move about the great lakes. Today we will explore a bit of that tech and some history of Great Lakes Shipping. All of the 1000-footers are US vessels. The Canadian fleet needs to travel to and from its major cities along the St. Lawrence Seaway, so the largest length for the Canadian vessels is 740 feet (Seawaymax-size). The reason for this standard length is the Welland Canal, which bypasses Niagara Falls. The locks here are only about 800 feet (240 m) long, and for safety reasons, the vessels must be at most 740 feet (230 m).
Nascar pit stops have technologically driven system that incorporates the use of 45 cameras will feed video of every stop made by every team to a central location, where eight officials will log pertinent information and report any violations.
Every wonder what kind of tech is used on a Garbage truck? Or how about the tech in your kitchen appliance? I will be covering mainstream stuff like Cars and aircraft, and some not-so mainstream stuff such as Ham Radio, Farming, Trucking and whatever. Tech is everywhere and I aim to cover it one episode at a time.
