Ever wanted to know if you could become amortal? Of course, you might still be able to die via gunshot or another physical form of violence, hence the term amortal, not immortal. However, dying by disease or old age might be a think of the past. Today, we speak with Aubrey De Grey who has spent his career understanding how to end or, more accurately, reverse aging with modern medicinal technologies.
This episode explores the depths of the mind from an analytical perspective. How do humans think? What is a "mind" and how do we use it? Show-Notes: Clarification on Kahneman and Tversky's System 1 and System 2: System 1 is roughly where action selection is consciously mediated. In System 2, action selection is deliberative. The other two forms of action selection, automatized and alarm, are presented within the LIDA model, not the above two Systems. Here's a link to view the LIDA model to help you follow along in case you struggle to grasp the visual model we're discussing. I would highly recommend taking a peek at it for a few minutes at least! https://imgur.com/gallery/LMr9f3g -All music rights reserved for @Snocker
An exploration of fear. What's the point of fear and what can we learn from studying it?
Looking to gain the newest insights in Climate Change and Atmospheric Physics? Today's episode attempts to elucidate one of humanity's growing problems - Global Warming. Note: C12 refers to the sum of the protons and neutrons (AKA: the atomic weight). So C12 has 6 neutrons and 6 protons, and C13 has 7 neutrons and 6 protons.
We tackle another one of the senses in this episode - Sound. We discuss how mammalian brains interpret sound and how scientists know where a sound orignates from.
Today's episode features a guest who specializes in maximizing human comfort! We explore possible ways to regulate our external and internal environments so that we can get extra cozy while reducing energy costs in the foreseeable future.
We have a little bit of fun with light in this episode. We learn how scientists and engineers are using light to manipulate our surroundings!
Have you ever been curious to understand how scientists are creating synthetic life? Maybe you want to know how the billions of bacteria around you operate? In today's episode, we dive into Professor Brian Davies' work to translate a few topics in microbiology and to spread a new approach to large-scale bacteria synthesis.
With humanity's energy consumption rates at an all-time high and batteries being implemented in almost every mobile contraption, the source of usable Lithium deposits grows scarce. In this episode, find out how Professor Benny Freeman is rising to the challenge and digging through industrial garbage cans to find Lithium.
This episode is dedicated to uncovering the science behind the human sense of taste. Have you ever been curious about how the brain interprets your favorite foods and beverages? Want to know more about the tongues five basic sensations?
