Tom Gianos is a Senior Software Engineer at Netflix focusing on its big data platform. He is one of the core contributors in charge of maintaining and improving Genie. Questions How fast is the pace of Netflix data collection increasing? What are the differences between running Hadoop in the cloud and running it in a data center? Why is job and resource management so important for a Hadoop ecosystem? What does Netflix do with spare computational resources? What is a bonus cluster? Does Netflix collect more data than it can practically make use of? This is one of the last three podcasts we recorded at FOSDEM that I am releasing and it's with Ross Lawley who is a driver bod / Python genius / architect / evangelist at 10gen, top notch technologist, passionate about 10gen and the cause and gets Cloud inside and out. We recorded this, as with… http://cloudevangelist.org/2013/03/07/podcast-ross-lawley-of-10gen-talks-nosql/
There are still myths about exactly what a NoSQL database can and can't do. http://data-informed.com/debunking-nosql-database-myths/
Today we talked with Mark Myers from the London Developer Co-op about all things NoSQL. Topics include: The four different types of NoSQL databases Why the need for NoSQL Why NoSQL has become some popular over the last few years How the NSF has provided NoSQL type functionality for a long time Some discussion about CouchDB, MongoDB and other NoSQL offerings The role of Javascript in NoSQL Mark’s blog entry about how to improve the NSF How and why Mark thinks XPages are much easier to use for development than other technologies he has used How the IBM XWork Server is well positioned to become a database server Who will be buying the first round of drinks at Lotusphere 2012 and much more…. The podcast runs about 40 minutes and is chock full of great NoSQL goodness. Download Episode 142 > About these ads Share this:FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailGoogleLike this:Like Loading... Mark Myers, market segment manager for IBM Watson Explorer, says the usual "3 V's" definition of big data is too narrow. "This way of looking at the issue limits big data to a technical challenge and misses what has become the real significance of big data: finding new ways to use data to create business value. To me, that is why I think big data is all data." Listen to him explain the thinking behind this approach and give advice on how to begin getting more value out of your data. (Hint: it's easier than you may think.) For more information about the IBM big data platform and products, visit www.ibm.com/bigdata.
