Literacy takes many forms. In this session we will focus on cultural, digital, health and workplace literacy and how literacy impacts access and retention in apprenticeship.
Access to reliable transportation is key to participation in registered apprenticeship. Whether it is getting to the Jobsite or the classroom, without transportation an apprentice is faced with a barrier to participation or retention in an apprenticeship program. This session will detail solutions used by practitioners to the transportation problem. The audience will hear about seldom used programs that enable apprentice access to transportation.

Join net.America and ICF for our Lunch and Learn webinar titled Building Stronger Registered Apprenticeship Programs on June 11, 2025 at 2:00 PM ET. This webinar, led by partner West Virginia Women Work, will explore awareness, supportive services, and proven strategies for building strong sustainable Registered Apprenticeship Programs. West Virginia Women Work is a nonprofit that supports and advocates for education, employment, and economic equity for all women. For over 20 years the organization has strived to help women in West Virginia earn a living wage. We achieve this goal through a comprehensive program of recruitment, training, referrals, placements, networking, advocacy, retention activities, and public workshops.The primary focus of the organization’s activities has been to help women explore, train, and secure employment in nontraditional occupations, especially the skilled trades. Our organization has served over 1,000 women in West Virginia with our career coaching service, computer literacy classes, and public career exploration workshops.Beyond the program benefits for individual job seekers, WVWW also assists employers that struggle to meet employment goals. Our organization creates a partnership network across the state that includes WorkForce WV, Adult Learning Centers, Registered Apprenticeship Programs, and private employers.Through these partnerships, we have direct access to feedback on the difficulties employers experience when searching for qualified tradeswomen. Our organization works to overcome unmet equal opportunity goals and advance women’s ability to increase their earning potential.
Dr. Edna Cadmus is an experienced nursing executive who led New Jerseyan Englewood Hospital and Medical Center to Magnet designation and re-designation three times. In 2010, she joined Rutgers School of Nursing, serving as a clinical professor of the graduate nursing leadership tracks. She designed and implemented the three tracks that are currently offered at the school.

Dr. Safiya U. Noble is an Associate Professor of Gender Studies and African American Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where she serves as the Co-Founder and Director of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry (C2i2). She holds affiliations in the School of Education & Information Studies, and is a Research Associate at the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford where she is a Commissioner on the Oxford Commission on AI & Good Governance (OxCAIGG). Dr. Noble is a board member of the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative, serving those vulnerable to online harassment. She is the author of a best-selling book on racist and sexist algorithmic bias in commercial search engines, entitled Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism (NYU Press), which has been widely-reviewed in scholarly and popular publications.
