On the 31st anniversary of the opening day of the first World Cup in America, Ray Stubbs takes us back to an extraordinary tournament. Even though England didn’t qualify, there were plenty of headlines on and off the field with the many familiar faces from the Premier League representing a plucky Republic of Ireland side. The tournament is remembered for record attendances, games being played in scorching hot temperatures and the best player in the world at the time - Roberto Baggio - missing the deciding penalty in the World Cup Final shootout.
