Description

Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”.

Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

Picture this if you will, your father is THE brilliant, iconic filmmaker, actor and revolutionist, Melvin Van Peebles.  And when you are just thirteen years old, he gives you a pivotal role in a movie that will change the way the world looks at black men and women forever.Mario Van Peebles, actor, eco-activist, director and producer, took that role, playing the younger version of his father, Melvin’s character in the mega-hit indie film, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.  An experience that would put Mario on the actor/filmmaker track for the rest of his life and allow him to bring his own vision of black people to the silver screen. But what if you found yourself confronted by ignorance and prejudice each time you sat in that director’s chair?  Would you give up your vision and continue to allow Hollywood to whitewash America? Or would you stand your ground and make films that cast black people in all the starring roles?
Scott Slaughter co-host and producer of The Only One In The Room has a short and casual, yet deep conversation with our guest Mario Van Peebles right after the show.If you'd like to ask a question and be featured on the Dear Laura segment you can DM us on Instagram @theonlyoneintheroom or email us via the website at www.theonlyonepod.comAlso visit the website for the latest from our host Laura Cathcart Robbins like live events, appearances, featured articles and more.We love hearing from you in the comments on iTunes and while you're there don't forget to rate us, subscribe and share the show!
Here’s a little story about a queer, mixed-race, black kid from Pittsberg California who was teased for being “GAY” by his peers, got beat up for being too feminine and never thought that he was good enough.Justin Michael Williams, 31-year old, author, yoga, meditation, mindfulness teacher, top-twenty recording artist and podcast host, showed those childhood doubters that he was not only good enough, but better than them all, making six figures and driving a BMW by the time he was 26-years old.But what if one day your “Baca”, your grandmother, the woman who had always loved you as you were, asked you a question --  one that would literally change the way you saw your life forever? Would you ignore her wise words and continue “living the dream” or would you answer her question honestly, knowing that your life would never be the same again?More From Justin Michael Williams:Get your very own Stay Woke here or hereDonate to the Stay Woke Book Tour Listen to the podcast: Motivation For Black People Finding Justin Michael Williams:Twitter & Instagram: @wejustwillAND IF YOU WANT TO WIN A FREE COPY OF STAY WOKE:-First person to post a link to this episode in our Facebook Group with the caption "I want my own Stay Woke" wins a free copy.-The Second winner will be picked at random so you still have a chance even if you weren't the first to post!!If you'd like to ask a question and be featured during the Dear Laura segment you can DM us on instagram @theonlyoneintheroom or email us via the website www.theonlyonepod.com.Also visit the website for the latest from our host Laura Cathcart Robbins such as live events, appearances, featured articles and more.Don't miss our bonus after show Scott Talks, where co-host and producer Scott Slaughter (aka Hon) briefly chops it up with our guest immediately after the interview.*If you know someone who might be feeling like they're the "Only One" be sure to share this or one of our other unique episodes with them. Imagine being a judge and when warranted, it was your job to give people life sentences in prison.  Can you picture what it must be like, regardless of your opinion, to have to change people’s lives for the worse every single day?Los Angeles Superior Court judge Craig J Mitchell, had been serving in the felony courts for years before he got an idea during one of his early morning runs, an idea that he might be able do something about the overwhelming destitution that he witnessed each day. What would you do if you had an opportunity to really make a difference in the lives of millions of people suffering from homelessness and addiction? Would you start skid rows first-ever running club and train the club members to run in marathons around the world?  Or would you leave the work to the missions and big charities, figuring that they are probably better equipped than you, to change peoples lives for the better?More From Judge Craig J. What if you were known as the NFL player with the voice of an angel and your reputation for making the ladies swoon was rivaled only by your reputation for making big plays on the football field?  Esera Tuaolo, proud Samoan, Hawaii native, Superbowl winner and contestant on The Voice, had everything that he’d ever dreamed of:  A career playing the sport he loved, the ability to support his family and the respect of his peers and fans.  But what would you do if you had a secret?  One so devastating that it would not only derail the career that you loved, but could also put a bounty on your head? Would you redouble your efforts to keep your truth hidden?  Or would you relieve yourself of your burden and tell your story to the world?More From Esera Tuaolo:Check out his organization www.hateiswrong.orgBook him for speeches through GreaterTalentFinding Esera Tuaolo:Twitter & Instagram: @eseratuaoloIf you'd like to ask a question and be featured during the Dear Laura segment you can DM us on instagram @theonlyoneintheroom or email us via the website www.theonlyonepod.com.Also visit the website for the latest from our host Laura Cathcart Robbins such as live events, appearances, featured articles and more.Don't miss our bonus after show Scott Talks, where co-host and producer Scott Slaughter (aka Hon) briefly chops it up with our guest immediately after the interview.*If you know someone who might be feeling like they're the "Only One" be sure to share this or one of our other unique episodes with them. What if you were a white kid who didn’t seem to fit in anywhere?  At home you were the one who could never get it together and at school you were the illiterate one, the drop out or the troublemaker? Steven Rifkind, 57-year old, Godfather of street team marketing and American music entrepreneur, was THAT kid, until a conversation with his grandfather changed his trajectory and sent him down a path toward a successful life in the world of hip-hop music.  A world where despite being the only one in the room that always LOOKED different, Steven finally fit in.But what if after building your music empire, you lost everything?  And you suddenly found yourself on the outside again, hoping desperately to continue doing the one thing that spoke to your soul and made you feel like you belonged?  Would you decide to switch gears and choose a new career path, where you wouldn’t look like the outsider? Or would you stay with the familiar and do the most to revive the life and career that you loved?More From Steven Rifkind:Check out Loud 25 on January 30th at New York Radio City Learn more about Loud RecordsFinding Steven Rifkind:Twitter & Instagram: @steverifkindIf you'd like to ask a question and be featured during the Dear Laura segment you can DM us on instagram @theonlyoneintheroom or email us via the website www.theonlyonepod.com.Also visit the website for the latest from our host Laura Cathcart Robbins such as live events, appearances, featured articles and more.Don't miss our bonus after show Scott Talks, where co-host and producer Scott Slaughter (aka Hon) briefly chops it up with our guest immediately after the interview.*If you know someone who might be feeling like they're the "Only One" be sure to share this or one of our other unique episodes with them. Who didn’t love “Ducky” from the John Hughes classic, Pretty In Pink?  Or Charlie Harper’s lovable but uptight brother, Alan from the long-running, mega-hit CBS television series, Two and A Half men? Jon Cryer, Emmy-winning actor, screenwriter, director, and producer was looking forward to slowing down a little when his show ended after it’s twelve record-breaking season-run, so he could spend time with his family, pay better attention to politics and catch up on the true crime podcasts that he and his wife, Lisa loved to listen to, together. But what would you do if, one day, a Tweet you sent to the producer of your favorite podcast, resulted in an offer to join them in the fight against wrongful convictions?  Would you take the offer and put yourself out there in a world that might not take a “serious” Jon Cryer seriously? Or would you play it safe and stay in your lane, and leave the crime fighting to the so-called experts?More From Jon Cryer:Listen to Undisclosed on iTunes or wherever you get your podcastsWatch Supergirl on The CWFinding Jon Cryer: Twitter @mrjoncryerIf you'd like to ask a question and be featured during the Dear Laura segment you can DM us on instagram @theonlyoneintheroom or email us via the website www.theonlyonepod.com.Also visit the website for the latest from our host Laura Cathcart Robbins such as live events, appearances, featured articles and more.Don't miss our bonus after show Scott Talks, where co-host and producer Scott Slaughter (aka Hon) briefly chops it up with our guest immediately after the interview.*If you know someone who might be feeling like they're the "Only One" be sure to share this or one of our other unique episodes with them. Not just wrong for the things you thought or said but that you were the actual embodiment of wrong.D'Loco Kid or D'Lo grew up in a small, immigrant community in a Los Angeles suburb. Imagine that completing your degree was a double edged sword? Getting your doctorate might be the crowning achievement for a single mother from Compton, California, but earning your PHd would also put you in rooms where black women had never gone before. Rooms where, even in the new millennium, you might not be wanted or where your voice and opinion might not be valued.Dr. Sharoni Little, CEO, revered thought-leader, global facilitator, media commentator, data analytics expert, author, renowned scholar and professor at the USC Marshall School of Business, put her education aside at age 35, when her twin sons, Jaren and Jared were born. But what would you do if the degree you’d stopped pursuing had an expiration date? And if you didn’t drop everything and complete one final dissertation, all the hard work you’d done and the sacrifices you’d made would have been for nothing. Would you stop your life and make your deadline? Or would you pass, deciding it was better to leave well enough alone?More From Dr. Sharoni Little:Reach out to Sharoni at USC Marshall School of BusinessFinding Dr. Sharoni Little:Instagram: @drsharonilittleIf you'd like to ask a question and be featured during the Dear Laura segment you can DM us on instagram @theonlyoneintheroom or email us via the website www.theonlyonepod.com.Also visit the website for the latest from our host Laura Cathcart Robbins such as live events, appearances, featured articles and more.Don't miss our bonus after show Scott Talks, where co-host and producer Scott Slaughter (aka Hon) briefly chops it up with our guest immediately after the interview.*If you know someone who might be feeling like they're the "Only One" be sure to share this or one of our other unique episodes with them.  Imagine being an actress, dating celebrity after celebrity and then (predictably) finding the love of your life on a film set, getting married and having three beautiful babies and then feeling that your life is completely complete.Actress and producer, Kimberly Russell and her husband, Michael Bonewitz, made the decision together to put her acting career on hold while she raised their three children. But a chance encounter with a stranger, a mom at her kid’s school, threw them all an unexpected curveball: Her dying wish was to have Kim and Michael take her five children after she died and raise them as her own. What would you do if you were faced with a question that would change your life and those of an entire family that isn’t your own?  Would you do the unimaginable and take on an act of kindness that would be worthy of sainthood? Or would you look for a more reasonable solution in order to protect the family that you had worked so hard to curate.Finding Kim Russell: Instagram: @Kimberly_russellIf you'd like to ask a question and be featured during the Dear Laura segment you can DM us on instagram @theonlyoneintheroom or email us via the website www.theonlyonepod.com.Also visit the website for the latest from our host Laura Cathcart Robbins such as live events, appearances, featured articles and more.Don't miss our bonus after show Scott Talks, where co-host and producer Scott Slaughter (aka Hon) briefly chops it up with our guest immediately after the interview. *If you know someone who might be feeling like they're the "Only One" be sure to share this or one of our other unique episodes with them.
