Super Bowl number 56 with the LA Rams vs the Cincinnati Bengals at home in LA in the new Rams SoFi Stadium; Inglewood with the half time show featuring Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre!. It's also the day before St. Valentine's Day, but more importantly this year marks 20 years since Waylon Jennings left this world. He was only 64 years old and died due to diabetic complications. But he had one hell of a life. Played bass guitar for Buddy Holly, gave up his seat on the ill-fated flight the day music died. He lived on to pioneer the Outlaw Country movement. And along with Willie, his wife Jessi Colter and Tompall Glaser was featured on country music's first platinum album, "Wanted! The Outlaws." He was the Balladeer for The Dukes of Hazzard TV show. And later Waylon part of the country supergroup The Highwaymen with Willie, Kris Kristofferson, and the man in black Johnny Cash. Waylon sold over 40 million albums, the man needs need no further introduction. Today we have with us, James Jennings, you are the last living brother of Waylon Jennings. Hey James! Thanks for joining us here on tiny curations. How are you doing today? Great seeing you this week at your store and chatting with you. Like many men my age, I loved Dukes of Hazzard! Watched it every Friday night following the show that my parent's would watch, Dallas. I had a little 33 record of Waylon singing the "Theme From The Dukes Of Hazzard - Just Good Ole Boys". I would place the needle on that record and time it to the TV show when is started and let the record play along with Waylon Jennings as The Balladeer. Even had the now Vintage 1982 Holy Grail of Power Cycles, the Dukes Of Hazzard General Lee Big Wheel from Coleco complete with the stars and bars and all. Although I was only able to see the man live in concert once at the Willie's 4th of July Picnic in Luckenbach in 1996 with Willie, Waylon and the Boys. Your brother along with his music made a big impression and me and so many others. James, I've met you before at your Waymore's Liquor Store and then again this past Monday, right there in your hometown of Littlefield, TX, just West of Lubbock near the panhandle. You were so kind and gracious to show my family around your store and what is the only Waylon Jennings museum in existence in the back your Waymore's Package Store. How did that come about, why did you start the Waylon museum there in Littlefield? The store is located 30 minutes West of Lubbock, in the small town of Littlefield, smack dab in the middle of town sits Waymore's Liquor Store and Waylon Jennings Museum at 901 Hall Ave Littlefield, TX 79339.

His name is Robert Paulson. As heard in the David Fincher directed movie released in 1999 and based off of the Chuck Palahniuk novel. The movie has become a cult classic after it's release to DVD. That's where I first watched it. The only movie that I started over and watched again for a second time, right after watching it for the first time. Meat Loaf played Bob who Edward Norton's character meets in a testicular cancer support group, but who later joins Fight Club. Upon his death, at the insistence of Edward Norton's character and then repeated by the goons after Bob's death during "Project Mayhem":

Hailing of Los Angeles, California. Hollywood. Comin up in East Hollywood, off of the Sunset Strip back in the day along with Jane's Addiction and Green River who would go on to become Pearl Jam. Playing those bars and clubs around there in that whole scene. Junkyard would sign with Geffen Records and release 1989’s “Junkyard” album with singles such as “Hollywood” and “Simple Man’ and getting heavy rotation with videos on MTV. The Black Crowes opened for you. There are famous photos of both Axl and Slash of Guns N’ Roses wearing the iconic Junkyard in triplicate and Junkyard logo and the Junkyard Hollywood shirts.

Leon played the piano, among other things. In the 60's, he was a part of the legendary set of studio musicians, known as the Wrecking Crew. Performing with a who's who, including The Concert for Bangladesh with George Harrison and also along with others in the likes of Bob Dylan, Badfinger, and many more. Other musicians started finding his music and recording them and making hits with his songs. Like Delta Lady, from Joe Cocker. The song I only really started to dig when watching him recorded live in the 70's, in the documentary "A Poem is a Naked Person". The documentary was only released in 2015 at South by. For 40 years, the film went unreleased. It features Leon live and onstage in his heyday. And that's where I really got to see the man shine as a live performer. The rest of them film is Leon bouncing around Oklahoma, his recording studio, The Church Studio in Tulsa recording country and western album "Hank Wilson's Back Vol 1" under the moniker of Hank Wilson. He would end up releasing 4 volumes over his career under the alias. The documentary also showed Leon building a house and hiring a young artist, Jim Franklin, to paint his pool with his own psychedelic art, before it is filled with water. Jim Franklin would become known for his posters, around the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin and featuring Armadillos. Now there stands a full life sized bronze statue of Leon Russell in his signature top hat, and with his beard and longhair, it is located outside The Church Studio, commissioned by non-other than Jim Franklin. His most well-known song would most likely be "A Song for You" off of his first album on his own Shelter Records, a record company that he started, the album was release in 1970. Many artists have recorded it over the years. Willie did a version in 1973 with just him and Trigger. The song closed out the "Shotgun Willie" album, the first to feature his guitar Trigger. But one of my favorite versions is from Ray Charles. He recorded it in 1993, but the live version he did that same year for Willie's 60th Birthday Party is my favorite. There is another version out that for another Willie special, featuring him along with both Ray Charles and Leon Russell. But now let's hear the man do it how he does it on his piano, here is "A Song For You" with the lines "I love you in a place where there's no space or time", but these are the words on his own gravestone, his own lyrics from the song: "And When My Life is Over, Remember When We Were Together, we were alone and I was singing this song for you":   The last song on the "Shotgun Willie" album, the first album to feature Trigger. Trigger would again appear on Willie's next album "Red Headed Stranger" and then again for all the rest of his albums from that point on. I was lucky enough to see Leon many times.

Right out of the gates off of Sunset Strip with their debut album, 1989's "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich", D.R.F.S.R., also a song on the album. First single off the album, was "Down Boys". But the second single was the ballad "Heaven"; it went to #2. It was denied the #1 position by Milli Vanilli's "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You", so in hindsight, if the Grammy can be stripped from Milli Vanilli, seems that Heaven should be rewarded with the #1 spot. The album spawned other hit singes as well, "Big Talk" and another ballad "Sometimes She Cries". And a fan favorite, "32 Pennies" in a Ragu jar... The band consisted of former Plain Jane band members Jani Lane on vocals and Steven Sweet on drums. Along with Joey Allen on lead guitar, Erik Turner on rhythm guitar, and Jerry Dixon on bass. The following year in 1990, they would release their follow-up to "D.R.F.S.R.", "Cherry Pie". The title song "Cherry Pie" is the song that would define the band, even bigger than the success of "Heaven". The song was a last minute addition, due to record management insistence to have a new sort of 'rock anthem' added to the album for marketability of the new record. So, Jani sits down and pens the track in 15 minutes. This is one of the rare cases of a Music Exec being right, but it was Jani's brilliance that made this tongue in cheek song such a mega hit! The other bandmates weren't even around the studio at the time, so it was recorded like much of the album and like "D.R.F.S.R.", with studio musicians... this I just learned. And they even work in the title to their previous album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich"! Although, it is commonly known that the 'trained professional' reference is to none other than C.C. DeVille of Poison. CC is responsible for those licks and solo in Cherry Pie. This didn't help much with all of their comparison's of sound and appearance to Poison or due to the fact that they were touring partners. But "Cherry Pie" would be the song that Jani would come to resent and hate. It you google "Jani Lane ha", "tes Cherry Pie" comes up and autofills in the search bar for "Jani Lane hates Cherry Pie". He regretted writing the song, because he felt that it delegitimized him as a songwriter. That and that we would be remembered for this one song, "Cherry Pie". He shared his disdain about the song on a VHI interview, by saying "I could shoot myself in the fucking head for writing that song". He hated that he would be known for that song and be forever known as, the "Cherry Pie guy". He regretted writing the song, because he felt that it delegitimized him as a songwriter. That and that we would be remembered for this one song, "Cherry Pie". He has sold over 70 million albums and won CMA Entertainer of the Year 5 times, that and a whole lot of other accolades. Hank Williams has come to be known as a person who speaks his mind. Better or worse. You might know him from the theme song for the NFL's Monday Night Football. It was based on his 1984 hit "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight", it ran for decades! His daddy before him had a hard drinkin' hard livin' life and so did Hank Jr., as well as his son Hank III, let's start things off with "Family Tradition": That was my personal favorite, "Whiskey Bent And Hell Bound". And more about the "Family Tradition" that preceded that song. Shelton Hank Williams, known as Hank III, his son is now performing as the next generation Hank, Coleman Williams as simply IV. He just released his debut music this past April. And there is also Jett Williams, Hank Jr's step-sister. And Holly Williams, Hank III's half-sister, I love her 2014 song, "Waiting on June". Here is more Hank Jr with "If the South Woulda Won" off of 1988's Wild Streak: That was "A Country Boy Can Survive", one of Hank Jr's most enduring hits and a fan favorite. Bocephus as known by many and the name given to him by his daddy. Named Bocephus after Grand Ole Opry comedian Rod Brasfield's ventriloquist dummy. Hank Sr. died at a young age and when Hank Jr was only 3 years old and raised by his mother Audrey. Here is "My Name Is Bocephus":   Audrey, Hank Jr's mother had him performing his daddy's hits all over the country and Hank Jr. resented being known as an impersonator of his father. He tried putting his own songs into his live sets of his daddy's songs, but the crowds were not pleased as they had come to hear Hank Williams songs. He would start changing his style and coming into his own despite the crowd reaction. Hank was almost killed in 1975, during a mountain-climbing accident in Montana, where he fell 500 feet. After taking years off and many surgeries, he returned more focused and what would become his career defining period. When he reemerged he had grown a beard and started wearing sunglasses and a Cowboy hat, this would become his signature look. Here is a song made popular again by Alan Jackson on his 1999 covers album, "Under The Influence", here is Hank doing "The Blues Man":   Times are good around Austin and the Country... interest is down and the Stock Market's up; and let's pray that it stays that way. But it was during what is now known as the Great Recession that Bocephus released his last big single and I love it. I doubt I'll hear it tonight, so we will play it now, this is "Red, White & Pink-Slip Blues".

They may have had a real Cinderella story, in this fairytale the band was 'discovered' by none other than Jon Bon Jovi in a club in their hometown of Philadelphia. Jon was able to help them secure a record deal. Recently, Tom Keifer did go on the record in an effort to set the record straight and has stated that a couple years before Jon Bon Jovi took interest in the band, Gene Simmons of KISS had initially found them and got attention of the Polygram record label. But they weren't signed. It was only after Jon Bon Jovi again came to that same record label of Polygram that they took another look at Cinderella and signed the band. The band consisted of Tom Keifer of vocals, lead guitar, and a variety of other instruments. Eric Brittingham on bass, the standout blonde guy in the otherwise black hair metal band. Where the singer did not have to have blonde hair. Jeff LaBar on guitar, and Fred Coury on drums. And all would lend backing vocals. This was Cinderella. And a good friend went on the "Monsters of Rock Cruise" in 2014 with a ton of other 80's bands on what would certainly have been an incredible time. He would see what would come to be the final performances Cinderella would ever perform together as a group. It was reported last week that longtime touring keyboardist for Cinderella, Gary Corbett had died. He also played on Cinderella's "Hot And Bothered" that was featured on the Wayne's World movie and also on their final album. Previously he was a keyboardist for KISS. Don't recal a KISS keyboardist? Me either, they kept him in the shadows along with other musicians and only featured the main four KISS members on stage. It was his job to fatten up the guitar and overall sound. He did a lot, he also wrote "She Bop" for Cyndi Lauper. It was Lung Cancer that had advanced and spread to his body.. He died just short of his birthday the following day. I've seen that many times in my own life, when somebody is so sick, they try and hold on to a certain date that is meaningful to them. My grandfather waited until his anniversary with my grandmother. My father-in-law just lost a short battle with cancer and will be missed by our whole family, we miss you Papa Terry. But it would also be reported on the same day, that longtime Cinderella guitarist, Jeff LaBar, had also passed. It was believed to have been alcohol related, as he had had many troubles in the past and often blamed as the reason that Cinderella would not reunite. This was a sad day for Cinderella, family, and fans. Rest in Peace Jeff LaBar and Gary Corbett. And Papa Terry. Thanks for listening.

Today being March 2, 2021, Texas Independence Day and my fraternal brother and Governor who declared today the end of all COVID-19 Restrictions. Also, as we head into Spring Break when this town would normally become ground zero for the best place to be on the planet; for the all encompassing South by Southwest Conference and Festivals. But this cannot be as last year it was abruptly cancelled just days before it was scheduled to kick off. Now in 2021, it will be a scaled down virtual event; with keynote speaker Willie Nelson. But it was in 1988, only in the second year of SXSW, that Dangerous Toys would be signed to Columbia Records after a publishing representative had spotted them playing a live show. "The Toys", would release their debut album "Dangerous Toys" the following year. The video for their first single "Teas'n, Pleas'n" was on heavy rotation on Dial MTV and Riki Rachtman's Headbanger's Ball. As a teenager in Texas we were so full of Texas pride to see Texas flags hanging behind the band on the stage and all of the cowboy imagery like a cow skull with the state of Texas painted on it. And in their next video for "Scared", lead singer Jason McMaster is sportin' leather pants painted up like the Texas flag, so damn cool! But there is yet one other reason that we are here today and not only celebrating Texas and the 'The R*tist 4*merly Known as Dangerous Toys', but also to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the release of their follow-up album "Hellacious Acres", on this date in 1991. Anyhow, back to our story... The first song off of "Hellacious Acres" was a song called "Gunfighter" and just recently, found footage has emerged out of an attic deep in South Austin. Yesterday it was announced that he had left this planet to from whence he came. The rock Gods have ca\lled him home where he will live eternal through his music, songs, guitar and synth. As if 2020 has not taken enough from us. This was not Covid related, but his long battle with throat cancer. I had seen a couple photos of him in the past year or so and you could see him withering away. But the news came as a total shock to the world. He is one of the best guitarists of all time, up there with the other greats! He was so influential in his style and innovations. His iconic guitars and red striped themes, from Frankenstein to Bumblebee (which he laid to rest with Dimebag Darrel). Van Halen was formed in Pasadena, California in 1972. They went through name changes, from Genesis to Mammoth. But per the advice of new singer David Lee Roth, changed their name to the family name of Van Halen for the brothers Eddie and Alex on drums. Along with Michael Anthony on bass and harmonies. I note that their original bass player, Mark Stone, died of cancer too, just 10 days prior to the passing of Eddie. They also went through many lineup changes. But they got their second wind with former Montrose singer Sammy Hagar. The music was different, but it brought in a new era of the band and fans. These years are known as Van Hagar. They even did a short stint with Gary Cherone of Extreme. Then they did their last rounds of touring. First reuniting with Sammy, then going full circle to end with a David Lee Roth reunion. The boys were back together again albeit without the harmonies of Michael Anthony. Instead in favor of Eddie's offspring Wolfgang Van Halen joining the family band. Let's jump right in and hear the tail end of that Van Hagar era. That was "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" with David L. Roth or El Roth as he has recently renamed himself this Summer. Before that was "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)", then starting us off was "The Seventh Seal", both off of the final Van Hagar album, "Balance". It was released in 95 in the midst of the grunge movement. It stands up very well today. The albums prior to "Balance" were monster hits in sales and this was the last one of them that clocked in, even despite the sea change in rock at the time. I saw them once more with the reunited DLR 5 years ago. I'm so glad to have caught both eras of this legendary band. And finally, let's go out with an EVH solo from Michael Jackson's "Beat It" off of the 1982 "Thriller" album, the best selling album of all time. Eddie reportedly did this solo on the first take and did it for free. The only thing he wanted in exchange for executing this brilliantly flawless solo was a case of beer and a dancing lesson from the King of Pop himself. Rest in Peace King Edward The Great. My mom took me and my sister in 1987 on their breakout Slippery When Wet Tour, with Cinderella in tow. But just a few years later, at the turn of the decade in 1990, Jon Bon Jovi wrote an entire soundtrack and music inspired by "Young Guns II". Emilio Estevez, son of Martin Sheen and brother of Charlie Sheen, played William H. Bonney, "Billy the Kid" in the original Young Guns and then again in the sequel. He asked his friend Jon Bon Jovi if he could use their power ballad, "Wanted Dead or Alive" for the new movie. But instead Jon quickly penned "Blaze of Glory", the song that we all know today, it was a number 1 hit that Summer and remains a classic to this day. This week, the film and the soundtrack to "Young Guns II" turns 30 years old. I was an impressionable 15 year old boy when it came out. Let's celebrate both film and music together today. That was another single off of the soundtrack, but just less known, that was "Miracle". I participated in a little civil disobedience this past Saturday. And speaking of my recent transgression, the last time I swam in the sacred waters of Barton Springs was after I walked in the Spirit World myself, earlier in the year. All completely harmless, I promise. Nothing like you have been seeing on the news, but I may be seen in a few video clips if you look hard enough. But could you imagine the lawlessness of the old West? In Billy's time following the Civil War, in the 1880's? In New Mexico, a territory no less? Well, that's what 1988's "Young Guns" is all about. Billy and the Regulators in the Lincoln County War. The film ends with and epitaph of the demise of Billy the Kid by the hands of Pat Garrett at Old Fort Sumner in 1881, with the word "PALS" scrawled on his headstone. "Young Guns II" is the continued story, but now expanded upon by Brushy Bill Roberts. The real-life man who in 1950 appeared claiming to be the real legendary dead western outlaw William H. Bonney, Billy the Kid. He proves to be able to escape from handcuffs and has all of the scars from The Kid's gunshot wounds. As old as he is, he even travels to the state of New Mexico for a meeting with the Governor. He and his lawyer are wanting the full pardon that he had been promised by New Mexico Governor Lew Wallace in 1879, but which was subsequently withdrawn. During the meeting he has a heart attack. He returns home and dies a couple weeks later in his adopted home of Hico, Texas in Hamilton County. Where I have family to this day. And home to the old Koffee Kup Kafe. He is buried there and now has a new and improved headstone and even a statue downtown. This is "Blood Money".

Now, remove the groove. And all that's left is pure Thrash. There you have it, that is Power Trip. And here they are in their natural habitat, doing what they do best. Live onstage and every bit as good, if not more in studio, Drown. Riley Gale front man of Dallas Thrash band Power Trip has died at a very young age. The band made the announcement yesterday, that he had passed away the night before on August 24th, 2020. This comes as a shock to the metal community. Just a few months ago, Ice-T released one of those quarantine videos of a new Body Count song. That's off their latest album Carnivore, "Point The Finger" featuring Riley Gale. Power Trip had reportedly been in the process of recording their third album. And they had released a couple singles following their second album, the universally acclaimed "Nightmare Logic" from 2017. There are some really great songs on that album. All of what I play today is off of "Nightmare Logic." Well, let's get to it. And remember the band, and the man. Starting us off is Track 2, and undoubtedly their most well-known, this is "Executioner's Tax (Swing of the Axe)". That was "Waiting Around To Die". And before that, "Waitin' Around to Die" by the late great Townes Van Zandt of neighboring Fort Worth. I hope you like that song placement there, while those song titles do share the same name; I also play it in homage to another fellow and former  IBMer, Randy Gregory, II and his much missed show on IBM Community Radio, "The Void". He used to play some extreme metal, followed by acoustic folk songs, then more hardcore metal. I remember last Summer on vacation in the mountains of Colorado and listening to one of his episodes. In particular with TVZ songs playing in between the heavier songs. Tends to make a pretty good foil, I think. Before that was the title track, "Nightmare Logic". I was lucky enough to catch the band a couple times. And anybody that had ever heard any these bands songs would spread the gospel. And I took it upon myself to do the same. It is sad that we are honoring a tribute to Riley Gale, but our hearts go out to him and his family and friends and his band. Rest in Peace. Thanks for listening.

And today we are here with Ghostland Observatory; joined by both members; with non-other than Aaron Behrens the energetic frontman with Willie braids and trademark shades. And along with Thomas Ross Turner, who plays the mad scientist in the duo. Thomas lays down sick beats and musical atmosphere and you control the stage with your vocals and presence. All of this with lot's of lasers. How are you doing today Aaron? How are you doing today Thomas? How do you feel in these strange times? Your music has been described as a combination of electro, rock and funk and electro-dance soul rock, but how would you describe the Ghostland sound? If you could put it it words, how would you describe a live Ghostland show? The live experience, energy, and vibe. I know that you've had a lot to do with the lasers and stage set up, could you tell us about that? We wanted to celebrate the band, as this is when GLO came into view for us with "delete.delete.i.eat.meat" came out driving a trashy moped in 2005. That was 15 years ago! How does that feel? Our first song today is off of the follow-up from 2006, "Paparazzi Lighting", titled "Piano Man". As we go into this song, do you have any words for your Piano Man Thomas Ross Turner? That was "Best Won't Do" from 2005's "delete.delete.i.eat.meat" album. And one more song off of "Paparazzi Lighting", this was a big hit for you guys. "Sad Sad City". How do you feel about this song then and now? And furthermore, I'm not sure the exact meaning of the song or if the city in question is Austin. But here were are with a cancelled SXSW in 2020, concerts, music, events, and everyday life. Austin is such a music oriented city, if feels as if this song means more now than ever. Because there certainly Ain't no party in a sad, sad city. And once in 2013, I was at SXSW and happened to catch a super intimate acoustic set by a deceased grunge pioneer, Chris Cornell. There he is playing all of his songs and hits from over the years from Soundgarden, AudioSlave, and he introduces a song from an Austin band and goes into his own version covering "Sad Sad City". I'm sure you have heard it right, on Youtube? What did you think about that, how did that make you feel? Very much so. Any final thoughts that you want to leave today for your fans or fans to come or how one could train a redbird? WOW, that is so cool! Thank you so much for sharing that. Each band grew more bold, raunchy, and popular over the years, culminating in the greatness of "The Scabs". Favorites like "Tarantula" came from this band, a song that Bob still ends most big shows with today. But it was his next venture in 1999, a revolving band of musicians that set him up on his solo career. It was 20 years ago, that he formed Lonelyland, as well as his ongoing every Monday night at 8:30 residency at the Saxon Pub. Back in the day, which was a Monday, that was the place to be, a crowded legendary pub full of locals and glimpses of then girlfriend, Sandra Bullock, with her bottom perched up on the bar. Actually, as far as I'm concerned, it is still the place to be on Monday nights. This is the place where you should take a date; and where you should take out of towners on an otherwise boring Monday evening. It is fun and entertaining. Bob's take on songwriting is write as much as you can, and that there will be a lot of bad songs, but occasionally there may be some good ones, too. It is this intimate Monday night setting where he will showcase what he has recently been working on. So each show is new and different... Well, other than how each night will end, that will always be the same. He will ask for an audience suggestion of a song, in which he will then take that song's lyrics and melodies and merge it into his "It's Time to Go" song. Something like this... Back when he started that Lonelyland residency, he warmed up, by releasing one album that year on his on Shock-a-rama label. But it was the following year in 2000, when he self-released another album; and album that would stay at the top of the Waterloo Records album charts for years to come, eponymously titled "Lonelyland". This album was so popular locally, that it gained national attention and was then distributed by Universal Records, gaining it an even wider audience. There is so much good material here from Bob's career, that I will feature a full "Deep Dives w/ Matt Comer" episode in the future. But today, I want to celebrate the creation of Lonelyland 20 years ago, and spotlight that album. Here are some of my favorite songs from a solid album full of good songs. Oh by the way, I think Bob is deathly afraid of water, oceans, and drowning, as you may hear in recurring themes in much of his music, enjoy! That was 2002. Before that was my favorite track on the album, Tokyo. And starting us off was Big Blue Sea, you may have heard it on a rom-com soundtrack from that period. I hadn't seen her in several months. She had a condition that was deteriorating her ability to make new memories. The last time I saw her, she told me that "someday I would understand and it would all make sense". How could a beautiful young strong and determined woman with an enduring professional career and mother to a college bound athlete Senior in High School. Emotions ran high. And there was a hurt feelings, feelings as if people didn't do enough, and between friends and other friends and family over her support over the past few years, or rather lack thereof. One of her close friends took care of the arrangements. And my wife and I held a Memorial of Life a couple weeks afterwards in our backyard. It was a touching outdoor service and many of her friends and family spoke. Myself included, please see the show notes for the words that I spoke in honor of my friend and for additional details about her life. Such close friends, in fact, that my would be wife and her became really close friends. She even was my wife's closest help during our wedding. And my wife and I attended her second wedding ceremony several years after our own. She leaves a strong young son behind, whom just graduated college a few months ago. He is a real good young man with a bright future and would make his loving mother so proud. She had been a single mother who gave so much of her life for him. Many songs were played today in remembrance of my friend. These songs are special to me and mean a lot. I hope you enjoyed them as much as we did. I had just seen him and his wife the night before for a surprise dinner. The following night, his wife called and told me of his sudden passing. We were all devastated. His funeral took place the following Saturday. It was a touching service and many of his friends and family spoke. Myself included, please see the show notes for the words that I spoke in honor of my friend and for additional details about his life. As I knew my friend so well and for such a long time and since I am a lover of music, I was asked to put together music for the funeral and reception. Having done this before for other friends and family, it was an honor to this on behalf of my friend. As my friend and I were both in our early 40's, and both grew up in the Texas hill country and on the Highland Lakes on the Colorado River; and liking the same kind of music, country music. Ranging from Country and Western to 90's Country, and any of the good stuff that Nashville put out, but mostly it was Texas Country. These songs could suffice for my own someday or for others folks of the same liking. Today, I would like to play a distilled playlist from that day in honor of my friend, this is Funeral for a Friend. Many songs were played today in remembrance of my friend. At a time, when metal was on the decline, these guys brought in your face riffs packed with heavy Texas groove! The Dallas boys, Diamond Darrell, or rather Dimebag Darrell who he affectionately became to be known, was a master shredder and his brother Vinnie Paul on pounding drums; along with Rex on a thumping bass and Phil Anselmo on some screaming (ass) vocals made up this band. They had many albums. some in the glam rock vein, full of KISS and Van Halen love. But it wasn't until the release of Cowboys from Hell in 1990, that they broke down the metal walls. They were able to cement their legacy with a few more great albums, before they went on hiatus and broke up in 2003, way too soon. Phil and his drugs, were pinned as the bad guy in the breakup. But he went on to front many other bands. On a side note: Phil along with his biographer Cory Mitchell, hosted the Housecore Horror Film Festival in Austin, Texas in 2014 and 2015, in which I was lucky to have been a part of. It was a fantastic blend of horror movies and metal! However, the event died along with Cory Mitchell when he had a heart attack loading out and died in the parking lot the morning after Danzig closed down the festival. But today we are honoring Dimebag as today is the 15 anniversary of his passing. Tragically, in 2004 in front of crowd in Columbus Ohio, Dimebag was shot point blank just after taking the stage in with his new band, Damageplan, that he had formed with his brother on drums. The gunman, the coward, was said to be distraught over the breakup of Pantera when got on stage and killed 3 people, before he too was gunned down by a fast acting police officer. His brother Vinnie Paul, carried on with the band, but he too passed away too soon, just last year. To start us off, is Shedding Skin off of Far Beyond Driven, which celebrated it's 25th Anniversary this year:   That was Cemetery Gates off of CfH and before that was Hollow, the song that closed 1992's Vulgar Display of Power album. I was at the GNR reunion tour in Dallas a few years ago. The next day, friends and I make the pilgrimage to Dimebag's grave. Upon arriving at the cemetery gates and not knowing where to go next, we asked a landscaper, he immediately knew who we were looking for and replied "Dimebag aqui, Dimebag aqui", pointing to his gravestone. Gathered around the grave were many concert goers from the night before and many joints layed as an offering on his headstone. 6 feet deep lies the man, in a gifted KISS Kasket and with Eddie Van Halen's personal yellow-and-black-striped Charvel electric guitar from Van Halen II, Bumblebee. fitting, since Dimebag's last words on Earth were, "Van Halen!" moments before he was gun down. Somebody near us said that they ran into Vinnie Paul at the concert last night and shows us proof, a photo together on their cell phone. Pantera and the legend of these 2 men captivated us all. He has that great song "Turtles All the Way Down", all about psilocybin, DMT, and reptile aliens from "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music". Then he released an great cover of Nirvana's "In Bloom", from "A Sailor's Guide to Earth". These are not bro-country moves. I watched it. Now, I was fresh off of Fantastic Fest, so I was used to seeing some great visuals. Then the night before I had seen Roger Waters new "Us + Them" convert film. If anybody ever wondered what Pink Floyd would look like in 2020, this is it! A bit on the political side, but that is Roger Waters. But more great visuals, of course! It's Friday night, I catch Guns 'N Roses on their Not In This Lifetime Tour, with a reunion lineup for the last several years, the 17th annual Austin City Limits (ACL) music festival held in Zilker Park which is held on two consecutive three-day weekends. Sympathy for the devil that we speak of... Simpson was chosen as the opening act for several shows during GnR's "Not in this Lifetime" tour in the summer of 2017. But I get home and watch "Sound & Fury" and was completely blown away! Not what you would typically expect from a country artist. It is like a Pink Floyd movie, but with a Samurai. This was something extraordinary! Here is Make Art Not Friends, my favorite song on the album. I read some reviews about the album, many of them are not favorable. Many of them point to the comparisons with ZZ Top's "Eliminator" album. Sure. But this song here, it's like The Cars , Ric Ocasek recently deceased. It's like a marriage of "Just what I Needed" and let the "Good Times Roll". And if you do like this, check out Shooter Jenning's Hierophant "Black Ribbons" album from 2009. A dystopian rock opera concept companion to "Sound & Fury". It too surfs the radio dial and genre. This has now quickly and easily become my favorite album of the year. "The most important country record since Red Headed Stranger." - Matt Comer And just announced today, an arena tour for Sturgill Simpson! He's coming to the Erwin Center on March 28, 2020. Along with fellow Kentucky singer/songwriter Tyler Childers, whom Sturgill produced his last 2 albums. Tyler is great, too! I caught him this Summer at Robert Earl Keen's 4th on the River in Kerrville. He really brings out the rowdy crowd! And I, along with my friends, may have somehow been mistaken for him and his band afterwards at a hotel pool... Are you sure Hank done it this way? I don't know, but Hank lead his own way. And so did Waylon and so many others. The ones that we still talk about to this day. And Sturgill he is on his own path, too. And him doing an arena rock show, WOW! I mean seriously, I've seen the setlist...

Named Eric James, by his guitar playing father, in honor of two greats; Eric for Clapton and James for Jimi James Hendrix or born James Marshall Hendrix! Eric moved to Austin when he turned 19, almost 20 years ago. And he plays a vintage 1959 Fender Strat that shows it's age. I first saw him play a SXSW kick off party and then more regularly each year at the Arlyn Studios SXSW Homecoming Party. He recently opened for Slash at Stubb's, when Slash came through town with Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators. Back in June, he played a Waterloo in-store appearance for his new album "Good So Bad". Here is that title cut off of the new album: Good So Bad... I've seen him do some blistering numbers of Jimi Hendrix songs, here is one he did live, "Little Wing" a la the style of Stevie Ray Vaughan. That was "See You Tonight". And if you want to see him tonight, he will be playing at the Nutty Brown Amphitheater near my house in Cedar Valley, along with Monte Montgomery. So get out there and support live local music.
