Description

We talk to makers, artists, and researchers who use artificial intelligence tools in their creative practices. How are these technologies used today? How does the creative process change? What will co-creation look like in the future? And how can we contribute to a realistic and critical perspective that does not shy away from the technologies’ deficits, limitations, and impacts on society.

Produced and brought to you by Alexa Steinbrück and Simon Maris.

Season 1 was created and funded by the XLab, BURG Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle.

Lenka Hámošová is a designer, researcher and visual artist who explores the future use of synthetic media generated by Artificial Intelligence in the context of the post-truth era. Her research is conducted primarily through artistic research and participatory workshop methods. She is currently based in Prague, where she is pursuing her PhD at the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU). She is one of the founding members of UROBOROS, curator of the Uroboros: Designing in Troubling Times festival. We talk with Lenka about her love-hate relationship with synthetic media and text2image tools specifically! Along the way we explore the following: AI Models like DALLE-2 are democratizing image making and provide access to a collective imagination. How will these tools change our visual culture and even our understanding of the world? Aaaand much more! :) Since the shownotes for this episode are too extensive to fit in here, we have collected them all in this google doc for you. Here you can find links we talk about and also a time-coded overview of the episode. Moises Horta Valenzuela (aka hexorcismos) is an autodidact sound artist, technologist and electronic musician from Tijuana, México, working in the fields of computer music, artificial intelligence and the history and politics of emerging digital technologies. He crafts an uncanny link between ancient and state-of-the-art sound technologies channelled through a critical decolonial theory lens in the context of contemporary electronic music and the sonic arts. In autumn 2021 Moises gave a workshop about sound synthesis with neural networks at Burg Giebichenstein and we’re happy to catch up with him again! We’ll talk about how he expands his own musical practice in the field of Techno- and Noise music with Machine Learning algorithms, neural styletransfer, non-western sounds, indigenous ways of knowing, blurring the boundaries between sound and image, decolonizing AI aaaaaand more! This second preview-episode for the towards co-creation podcast is from the archive as well. In autumn 2020 we interviewed Claire Glanois for our BurgLabs Opening Symposium. Back then we only published parts of the interview, now you get the full conversation! We discuss how she became a AI researcher specialising in reinforcement learning coming from a PHD in mathematics, her workshop activities and her artistic work.  This episode was recorded remotely, please excuse the sound quality. Future episodes are now recorded with a higher quality setup - stay tuned. --- We talk to makers, artists, and researchers who use artificial intelligence and robotics in their creative practices.
