Update on my writing and work to spread what is most valuable. My own life is a collision of major societal issues including family dysfunction, mental illness, gender wars, and church apostasy. My quest is to speak truth in a compassionate and courageous way to illuminate issues.
Hi guys! It's been a while since I updated youon working on my memoirs. I've had some incredible experience that's reallybuilt trust in the goodness of other human beings.... and I'm also convinced that organized religion needs to improve their ability to be inclusive and compassionate in ministering to people who have very difficult lives or shameful pasts. I will update you in my book is getting published but for now just hang out with me :)
For now I need to take a break due to the production schedule and emotional demands from the book I'm writing. The memoir of my marriage to a transgender person is coming out soon. In it I share from my heart a journey of learning. I also speak out about my beliefs regarding how this social issue should be handled in the context of families. It is complicated and emotionally draining to write a book like this and I need all of my reserves to cope with the process. Don't worry (you aren't worrying anyway I'm sure), but I'll be back when I can...different probably.... but still sharing that which I believe is priceless in living a meaningful life.
Do you ever wonder how people in your family got so crazy? You want to support them, but they can be so extreme its hard to know what to do! Here are some tips from family systems therapy and Jungian psychology to help you out. I discuss the concept of the shadow and the emotional container. Comment if these concepts are helpful to you! :)Mondays - COME FOLLOW ME FOR LDS CHURCHWednesdays - SCRIPTURE STUDY NOTES!Friday - MENTAL HEALTH INFO
At my delightful middle age I finally started a scripture journal, and it has really helped me grow and overcome my weaknesses faster. I believe that when we give more attention to the answers God is giving us, he gives us more answers! And yes, I still have the flu, so I lovingly dedicate this episode to that *wonderful* virus!
To accomodate my busy writing schedule, I am changing uploads to be as follows:Mondays: COME FOLLOW MEWednesdays: SCRIPTURE STUDYFridays: MENTAL HEALTH...With some updates on writing as I go...The book that is getting ready to come out is on my marriage to a transgender person and how I have fought for traditional gender roles. I believe it is everyone's right to choose for themselves how to navigate gender in their lives, but for me, I want traditional roles in my home. My book tells my story. Thank you for your loving and kind support of my work on this channel! You are wonderful friends!
Come Follow Me Matt 5/Luke6, Feb 18-24 2019. How does Christ's formula for happiness differ from the world's formula? Hello - DRASTICALLY!! First off, Christ's way is available to all, whereas the worlds is only available to a few beautiful/powerful/rich. I don't know why any of us waste time chasing the world's way although I guess we all get fooled for at least a little while now and then. I did this episode while on some serious Nyquil due to my bronchitis so there is a disclaimer that I may not be entirely lucid haha! Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope your study of CFM is going awesome!
Are you worried about the suicide epidemic? If someone you love is suicidal, I'm sure you are especially concerned! In this episode I answer 8 of the most common questions about suicide, and also give the three things to rate when evaluating the risk level: 1. Does the person have INTENTION of suicide, 2. Do they have a PLAN for suicide, and 3. Do they have the MEANS to do it. As always, this is free advice given in faith that you will use all resources available to you and take responsible action to keep a loved one safe and is not a substitute for professional and competent medical and mental health care. Best of luck brave souls!
Does the Bhavigad Gita matter? Well... let me ask you this: do you think that one of the main spiritual texts of the LONGEST LASTING world religion in existence could possibly have anything of value to you? Uh...I definitely think so! I think we are very wise when we can see the good in the people around us and in the wisdom of the ancient world from which we came. In this episode, I explore 12 core beliefs in this beautiful scripture and also share 4 quotes from it. Learn with me and elevate your views and your cultural and religious literacy!
Last Wednesday we looked at four elements of great teaching from Jesus Christ. Here are three more that can help us at work, in our family lives, and in other ways. They are: 1. Use logic; 2. Establish a heart connection; 3. Be thoughtful, not reactive. I give some examples here that will hopefully help you see that these concepts are extremely relevant in our crazy busy lives today!! (scriptures referenced today are Luke 5: 18-26 for the logic piece, Luke 24:32 for the heart connection piece, and John 8:1-6 for the thoughtful piece). Let me know what you think!
I was tempted to pepper you guys with WAY too many insights, but instead, I stuck with four insights I got out of Alma chapter 7: 1. We can TRUST when we receive revelation, even if we still feel a little blind! 2. The spirit can reveal to us the condition of someone's heart when we are pleading for help to know how to best serve that person. 3. It is very useful to disclose the PURPOSE of why you are communicating something to someone. 4. It is very useful to disclose the BIG PICTURE of your HOPE for that person's ultimate success and joy. These things matter to me (a.k.a. are "priceless") and I would love to hear if you benefit from even just one chapter of the Book of Mormon. We need some of this book every day in our lives!
Holy cow I got so much out of the study this week! Some study sessions are better than others, right? John 2-4 I focused on learning more about WORSHIP and BEING BORN AGAIN. The parable of the Pickle by Bednar is referenced, and also the amazing quote by Rasband: 'There is no room for fear in these holy places of God or in the hearts of His children. Why? Because of love. God loves us—always—and we love Him. Our love of God counters all fears, When we are tentative in our commitments to the Lord, when we stray from His path leading to life eternal, when we question or doubt our significance in His divine design, when we allow fear to open the door to all its companions—discouragement, anger, frustration, disappointment—the Spirit leaves us, and we are without the Lord. If you know what that is like, you know it is not a good place to be. In contrast, when we stand in holy places, we can feel God’s love, and “perfect love casteth out all fear."'
How can walking bless your life? It has been AMAZING for me! It's helped me build relationships, improved my health, brought me closer to God,and comforted me w hen times have been very hard. Please join me for my "ode to walking" and let your gratitude for this free (priceless!) gift overflow!
What do you do when someone is freaking out with crazy emotions or is suicidal? It can be tempting to try to control the situation, tell them they are wrong, or shout out a bunch of solutions (of course, safety first always with an imminent threat of suicidal actions). But ironically, the person is calmed down best if you follow three principals: 1. Look at the emotional out burst as an opportunity to connect; 2. Help them figure out what they are feeling; 3. Help them problem solve from THEIR own ideas... and of course, set appropriate limits as needed. These skills are "priceless" to me and I know they can help many other people!
When is it right to break the law? Why would we need to even think about this. Well, revolutions and changes throughout history have always started with a brave law breaker! I don't advocate breaking the law. In fact, my church clearly states in the 13 Articles of Faith that we believe in honoring the law. But I do love to play around with ideas and I find Thoreau's essay on Civil Disobedience compelling. The work of Ghandi and Rosa Parks are important in this discussion, and I also briefly discuss the Heinz Dilemma and Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development. Yummy brain food!!!
Can you name even ONE situation where Jesus Christ's example isn't useful to you? I can't. He was the perfect teacher. No matter what our day to day life is like, we can and NEED to become a better teacher.... even if we work in a factory, or have one little child at home... we can teach like Jesus. He used 1. Confidence, 2. Stories, 3. Knowledge, and 4. Stayed on Topic. (Or in more scriptural terms, he taught with authority, used parables, knew the scriptures, and taught only the gospel). See the following scriptures - taught them as one having authority, Matt. 7:29. he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, Matt. 12:3. Why speakest thou unto them in parables, Matt. 13:10. Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, Matt. 22:29. preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, Mark 1:14.
