👉Article The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has announced that women will be paid the same amount of money per match as men when playing for the country's senior national soccer teams. Members of the men's team had previously been paid about $3,000 per match, while members of the women's team had been paid about $600 per match. The FAI said that the men's team has agreed to a reduction in fees for international games, with the money making up part of the new payments for the women's team. Women's team captain Katie McCabe said that the decision was "a huge step forward" for equality in Irish sports, and thanked the men's team for agreeing to it. As recently as 2017 the women's team was in the news because they did not get paid at all for their matches. The players said that they also had to share uniforms with Ireland's underaged teams and get changed for games in airport bathrooms. At the time the team asked for a gym membership, more uniforms and about $350 per match, with extra payments for winning or drawing games. The players threatened to not play a game against Slovakia, but were able to come to an agreement with the FAI and the game went ahead. Ireland is not the first country to give its men's and women's soccer teams equal pay. It joins England, Brazil, Norway, Australia and New Zealand, which have also made the change over the last four years.

👉Article Look out YouTube — there may be a new top app in town. According to a report by app analytics company App Annie, Android phone users in both the UK and US are spending more time on TikTok than YouTube on average. In the US, TikTok had over 24-and-a-half average monthly hours per user in June 2021, while YouTube had fewer than 23 hours. In the UK, the difference between the two was even larger, with TikTok having almost 26 average monthly hours per user in June, while YouTube had just under 16 hours. The figures are even more impressive considering TikTok's videos have a maximum length of three minutes, while YouTube's videos can be several hours long. App Annie's figures only count Android users, and do not count users of the Douyin app, a version of TikTok made to be used in China. This hasn't been the only recent victory for TikTok. According to the same report, TikTok is also the most downloaded social and entertainment app for both 2020 and the first half of 2021. However, looking at the whole world, YouTube still has a big lead over TikTok in total time spent on its app. YouTube has been first in the world since 2018, while TikTok was fifth for 2020 and the first half of 2021.
▲Vocabulary Learning 1.Playback theater–This is a uniqueform of improvisational performance createdby an American couple several decades ago. While it has connections to dramatherapy, it is fundamentally a performance, not a therapy session. The structureinvolves a conductor who invites audience members toshare true stories fromtheir lives. A team of performers, including actors and musicians, then instantlyimprovises a piece based on the shared story or emotion, presenting it back to thestoryteller and the audience as a gift. 2. Empathy–This word represents a core outcome and feeling generated byPlayback Theater. Katie describes the experience as "very empathetic" because itallows audience members to deeply connect with one another's stories. Bylistening to someone's personal experience and seeing it performed, people oftenrealize they are not alone in their feelings or situations. This shared understandinghelps build strong connections between strangers, fostering peace and reducingfear, which Katie believes is one of the main purposes of theater. 3. Performer–A performer in the context of Playback Theater is an actor ormusician who specializes in improvisation. Their role is to listen intently as anaudience member shares a personal story and then, on the spot, create and performa piece that reflects the story's emotions and narrative. This act is seen as giving a"gift" back to the storyteller. ▲Key Phrases •"It's connected to drama therapy a little bit, but it's definitely performance." •"The performers will then improvise a performance ofthat emotion or thestory." •"They gave us a gift of their story, but we are also giving the gift of hearingtheir story." •"I could relate very closely to both of their stories." •"I study theater because I think theater is one of the best ways to buildconnection between people." •"Building that empathy helps us... to create peace and understanding anddecrease fear." 1.Explain what Playback Theater is and how it isdifferent from traditional scriptedtheater. 2.What does Katie mean when she says Playback is like a "gift exchange"? 3.According to Katie, what is the main purpose of theater, and how does PlaybackTheater achieve this goal ☆若您對本頻道節目有任何疑問或建議,請e-mail 至:service@ner.gov.tw #每周一、四更新 #收聽無廣告不用APP選教育電台 線上收聽 #進一步學習語言點選教育電台 語言學習頻道 ----- 英語節目主持人:屠潔(Jenny) ----- Apple|Spotify|Google|KKBOX|Fistory|SoundOn 搜尋訂閱:世界咖啡館 ----- ▍教育電臺 ▍官網:https://bit.ly/39ISswV ▍粉絲團:https://www.facebook.com/educationradio ▍線上收聽:https://bit.ly/3cyxBhE ▍Channel+精選節目:http://bit.ly/499xCn5 Powered by Firstory Hosting
👉Article Online orders use a lot of shipping, which isn't great for the environment. That's especially true if something needs to be returned. But apart from not shopping online, how can people do less damage to the environment when they order something? Slow it down Choose slower shipping when given the option. This will give the company more time to plan the delivery and completely fill the trucks with packages, which means fewer trucks are needed and less fuel is used. Order everything at once If you're buying more than one thing, try to order everything at the same time so there's a better chance the order will come in one box. That's not always possible though, since the items may be shipped from different places. Pick it up Some stores let you order online then pick up your order yourself from somewhere nearby. This means more deliveries go to one place instead of being driven to different homes, which saves on fuel.

👉Article A study has found that multilingual people find it easier to learn new languages than people who are bilingual. Researchers measured the brain activity of 21 bilingual people and 28 multilingual people as they tried to identify words and sentences in the Kazakh language, which none of them spoke. All participants in the study spoke Japanese as their first language and English as their second. Most of the multilingual participants spoke Spanish as their third language — and some knew up to five languages. The researchers taught the participants the rules of the Kazakh language. They then gave participants four increasingly difficult tests to find out if they could identify words they had learned and make sure they were used correctly in sentences. While participants were taking the tests, researchers measured their brain activity. Participants could take each test repeatedly until they passed it and moved on to the next one. It was found that multilingual participants who were stronger in their second and third languages had to repeat the first test fewer times. And the multilingual group actually got faster at answering as the tests got harder. It was also found that the brain activity of multilingual people was similar to that of bilingual people — but for multilingual people the activity was much faster. Study co-author Kuniyoshi L. Sakai of the University of Tokyo said the results show that multilingual people are better at learning a new language than those who are only bilingual.

Its highest floors are located near the top of the 632-meter-tall Shanghai Tower, the world's second-tallest skyscraper after Dubai's Burj Khalifa. However, hotel height records usually only count buildings that are used as hotels from top to bottom, and Guinness World Records says that Gevora Hotel in Dubai is actually the world's tallest, at just 356 meters. J Hotel's lobby is on the 101st floor of Shanghai Tower, with its top on the 120th floor, which is 556 meters high. However, visitors needn't worry about a slow ride up as the building has the world's second-fastest elevators, which can travel at over 72 kilometers per hour. J Hotel features 165 rooms and suites, over 1,000 pieces of art, seven restaurants and bars, as well as a swimming pool on the 84th floor. The Stateroom, the hotel's cheapest, is over 60 square meters in size, offering guests a 24-hour butler service and a view of the Huangpu River for about $560 a night. The 195-square-meter J-Suite, which has a dining room for eight people and a sauna room, costs over $10,000 a night.

This British-South African swimmer has swum in the Antarctic — and now he's going to Greenland to complete "the coldest swim on Earth." Starting on August 25, Pugh, 51, plans to swim 10 to 15 kilometers across the Ilulissat Icefjord on the west coast of Greenland. The route will not just be a straight line — Pugh will need to avoid large pieces of ice in the water. The swim is expected to take him two weeks, and he says it will be the first multi-day swim in the Earth's polar regions. "This swim will be the most challenging of my career," said Pugh, who spent 10 days training in Iceland before going to Greenland. Pugh does long-distance swims to raise awareness of climate change and other environmental problems. In January 2020, he became the first person to swim under the Antarctic ice sheet. "Ice keeps our planet cool enough for us to live," Pugh said, adding that the world's melting ice is a danger to us all. "No ice, no life." He will be attending the 26th UN Climate Change Conference, which will be in Glasgow, Scotland, from October 31 to November 12. There he plans to ask world leaders to immediately take action on climate change. Pugh wants 30% of the world's oceans to be protected by 2030 to help stop climate change.

👉Article Residents in Dubai can now get a very different type of manicure: one that involves getting a microchip added to their nails. Founder of Lanour Beauty Lounge, Nour Makarem, told CNN that her beauty salon developed their smart manicure as a way to support social distancing in the beauty service industry during the pandemic. The microchips used for the "smart nails" can store names, phone numbers, social media accounts and websites. This means that clients can use their nails as digital business cards. "I always forget my business cards, you will not forget your nail," said Makarem. The nails connect to mobile devices using the same kind of Near Field Communication technology that is used in credit cards for contactless payments. In a video on the salon's Instagram account, a smart phone is shown scanning a nail before the person's name and contact details then appear on the screen. In another video for CNN, Makarem uses the technology to visit the salon's website. Makarem said that the only difficult part of developing the smart manicure was getting a microchip that was small enough to fit on a fingernail.

👉Article Kenya is known for its wildlife, but just how many animals does the country have? We may soon find out: Kenya is doing its first national wildlife census, counting many of its animals on land and in the water, including giraffes, zebras, antelopes and turtles. The census is counting animals in more than 50 national parks and protected areas in the country. "We've done wildlife censuses before, but mainly focused on highly trafficked species, like elephants and rhinos," Patrick Omondi of Kenya's Wildlife Research and Training Institute told The World. "We've never done a national census for all wildlife species." The Kenyan government is paying for the census, which started in May. It hopes the data will help with planning for tourism and conservation. The numbers will show whether conservation is working, and which areas need to be better protected. While this census is focusing on land and water mammals, Omondi said that the country is planning another survey focusing on other animals such as birds and reptiles. The country is using a few different methods to count its animals. Larger animals — such as giraffes, hippos and elephants — are being counted from helicopters and small planes. Researchers are also counting animals from boats and cars, and some are just walking and finding the animals by studying their waste. Cameras are also being used to count animals in forests.
