"Inside _shift" - Neil Beattie
Description
Inside _shift is a special bonus series recorded at Space Group’s annual _shift conference. It’s an event that brings together industry leaders and “empowered agents of change” to talk about how we can decarbonise the built environment and push the industry forward. This year, I was lucky enough to chat with some of the speakers and panellists, getting to hear their ideas, stories, and insights first hand.
In this episode, I’m joined by Neil Beattie, Professor of Energy Innovation at Northumbria University. Neil has spent over 20 years working in clean-tech R&D across both industry and academia, and his work sits right at the intersection of research, innovation, and the skills we need for a low-carbon future. At Northumbria, his research has focused on photovoltaics - from materials to full systems - with a passion for how we can scale solar energy sustainably to multi-terawatt levels.
Neil also leads the ReNU/ReNU+ Centre for Doctoral Training and is deeply invested in developing STEM skills at every level. More recently, he’s founded an Innovation Skills Consultancy, helping organisations unlock their potential through critical thinking and creative problem-solving.
It was a pleasure chatting with Neil and hearing his thoughtful, energetic take on the future of energy and innovation.
I hope you enjoy this episode!
