A Pleasant Reading
This is a nice short work that is about the Christmas spirit or what should be the spirit of Christmas. You can see where Dickens used parts to develop his idea of the proper spirit of Christmas. I would say the difference is that Washington focuses on the spirit of happiness and community as an end whereas Dickens brings into the story redemption.

A quick read for the traditions of the holidays
This story was basically what reintroduced the celebration of Christmas to the United States. A lovely quick read for the holiday season that shares the traditions and customs of Christmas from ancient times and old English celebrations.

Five Stars
Excellent edition of Old Christmas with pictures. I gave it as a gift.

Dickens read this before incorporating the already expiring English country ...
Dickens read this before incorporating the already expiring English country traditions Irving encountered on his travels and detailed in this book into first Pickwick Papers and later into the urban setting of "A Christmas Carol". Much of what we American include in our holiday festivities from kissing under the MistleToe to drinking and playing games on Chritmas Eve is attributable to this book. This is not a long piece and well worth the read. This free Kindle edition is very readable.
