This is a scene that captures an American experience I only know exists because of Black writers and artists. It feels so real to me because the culture of my youth was saturated by the sounds, colors and flavors of black artists/writers/cooks of the 80s, and this story transports the reader/listener right into it. We owe so much to all the many artists for the worlds they create - inside and outside.
