Прочита́в заголо́вок сего́дняшнего подкаста, вы, возмо́жно, гада́ете, из како́го тако́го “не того́” ме́ста мо́гут расти́ ру́ки и почему́ они́ отту́да расту́т?

Having read the title of today’s podcast episode, you might be wondering what is this “not that” place from where the hands can grow from, and why do they grow from there?

Всё о́чень про́сто: э́то выраже́ние испо́льзуется, когда́ хотя́т сказа́ть, что кто-то насто́лько пло́хо владе́ет свои́ми рука́ми, что ничего́ то́лком сде́лать не мо́жет. Наприме́р:

Everything is very simple: this expression is used when people want to say that someone is so bad at using his hands that he can not do anything right. For example:

Они́ проигра́ли матч, потому́ что напада́ющий у них – мази́ла, а у вратаря́ ру́ки не из того́ ме́ста расту́т.

They lost the match because their striker is a muff and their goalkeeper’s hands are growing out of the wrong place.

Мази́ла – э́то тот, кто ма́жет, от сло́ва “прома́зать”, то есть “не попа́сть в цель”.

“Мазила” is the one who “мажет”, from the word “to miss”, that is “not to hit the target”.

В бо́лее непринуждённой обстано́вке, выраже́ние про ру́ки на са́мом де́ле звучи́т так: ру́ки из жо́пы расту́т. В бо́лее прили́чном о́бществе, поня́тное де́ло, сло́во жо́па заменя́ется на не то ме́сто.

In a more relaxed setting, the expression about hands actually sounds like this: “hands grow out of the ass”. In a more decent society, understandably, the word “ass” is replaced by “the wrong place”.

К сло́ву о “жо́пе”, у ру́сских есть ещё одно́ выраже́ние, где употребля́ется э́то сло́во: всё че́рез жо́пу. Обы́чно оно́ употребля́ется в ситуа́циях, когда́ всё идёт не по пла́ну и́ли де́лается не так, как должно́ бы де́латься. Наприме́р:

By the way, about the ass: Russians have another expression where this word is used: everything through the ass. It is usually used in situations when everything does not go according to plan or is not done as it should be. For instance:

Почему́ ты всё де́лаешь че́рез жо́пу?

Why do you do everything through your ass?

То есть почему́ ты всё де́лаешь наоборо́т, шиворот-навы́ворот, не так, как э́то де́лают норма́льные лю́ди?

I.e. why do you do everything the other way around, upside down, not the way normal people do it?

С са́мого нача́ла всё пошло́ че́рез жо́пу.

From the very beginning, everything went wrong.

То есть всё не задало́сь с са́мого нача́ла.

I.e. everything did not work out from the very beginning.

Как и в слу́чае с предыду́щим выраже́нием, сло́во “жо́па” мо́жно замени́ть. И в да́нном слу́чае, его заменя́ют на одно́ ме́сто:

As in the case with the previous expression, the word “ass” can be replaced. And in this case, it is replaced by “one place”:

От них чего́-то доби́ться нереа́льно, у них всё че́рез одно́ ме́сто.

It is unrealistic to get something from them, they do everything “through one place”.

Опя́ть к сло́ву, вспо́мнилась заба́вная цита́та из кни́ги Ма́кса Фрая: всё че́рез жо́пу, зато́ от души́.

By the way again, a funny quote from Max Fry’s book came to mind: “everything is through the ass but from the heart”.
