ಡಿ.ಎಂ. ಪೂರ್ಣೇಶ್ ಅವರು ಪವನ್ ಶ್ರೀನಾಥ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸೂರ್ಯಪ್ರಕಾಶ್ ಅವರ ಜೊತೆ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಕಾಫಿ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

On Episode 129 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast, DM Purnesh talks to hosts Pavan Srinath and Surya Prakash BS about the rich legacy of Coffee in Karnataka, and sheds light on numerous aspects around the history, cultivation, harvest, processing, sale and evolution of coffee in Karnataka and India.

DM Purnesh is a fourth generation coffee planter from Karnataka, and the Chairman and Managing Director of the Classic Group of companies, which includes Classic Coffees. Growing up with coffee, Mr Purnesh and his family own and manage multiple world-class coffee estates including the Kalledevarapura estate near Bababudangiri Hills in Chikmagalur and the Harley estate in the Sakleshpur / Manjarabad area. Today, high quality single-estate and single-origin coffees from their estates are available across top coffee brands both internationally and in India, including a limited-edition ‘Producer Lot’ series by Purnesh and Shankar on Blue Tokai. They are also founder members of Specialty Coffee Association of India (SCAI). Mr Purnesh and Classic Coffees also innovate extensively on coffee cultivation and processing, including bringing out whiskey-barrel-aged varieties, and have won numerous awards for their coffees.

In this episode, Mr Purnesh shares some insights into what makes coffee special and how carefully prepared coffee can have unique flavours and characteristics. He also explains the cultivation process, and how much of Indian coffee is shade-grown, and by numerous small farmers and plantation owners. He also gives some glimpses into how coffee was produced and sold during older regimes of the Indian Coffee Board, and what is possible today after liberalisation of the sector. He also demystifies questions about coffee strains like Arabica and Robusta, the love and hate of Chicory, and helps us think deeper as we enjoy our next cup of by-two coffee.
