高粱酒 Gaoliang liquor

• a strong distilled liquor 濃烈蒸餾酒


• sorghum 高粱


• ranges usually between 38 and 63 percent alcohol by volume


• Kinmen Gaoliang Liquor is one of the most popular brands of Gaoliang in Taiwan.


• As its name indicates, it is produced on the island of Kinmen. There are the standard 58 percent and 38 percent alcohol bottlings.

小米酒 Millet wine

• a common wine in East and Southeast Asia


• the oldest wine in Taiwan


• a traditional beverage of Taiwanese aborigines


• often used in harvest festivals


• a symbol of harvest.

花雕酒 Huadiao jiu (lowery carving wine)

• nu'er hong 女兒紅 (daughter red)


• originates from Shaoxing, the eastern coastal province of Zhejiang


• made of glutinous (=sticky) rice 糯米 and wheat


• Shaoxing tradition of burying nu'er hong underground when a daughter was born


• digging it up for the wedding banquet when the daughter was to be married
