獵殺一隻藍鯨的油與肉量，約為小型魚的20-25倍，獵殺藍鯨是暴利。
捕鯨業從來不向外界報告獵殺鯨魚的數目，
公海上從事的捕獵行動是政府管不到的死角。
1927年，英國「海洋地理委員協會」決定派出一艘海調船，調查這事。
1929年，這艘船駛出，船上有個專家名叫麥金多。
