In a town in America, a lawyer wanted a very important job. This job was to be a special helper, called a prosecutor, who makes sure everyone follows the big rules of the town. But a group of very important judges looked at the situation carefully. They saw that this lawyer had worked for the town's leader before. The judges said that to be fair to everyone, the person doing this special job can’t be a close friend of the people involved. So, they decided someone new should do the job instead. This story shows us that for big, important jobs, following the rules of fairness is the most important thing of all.

Our first word is 'lawyer', L-A-W-Y-E-R. It means 律師. A lawyer is a person who helps people understand and follow the law. Another word for lawyer is 'attorney', and the opposite could be 'client', the person who hires the lawyer. Let's make a sentence: My aunt is a lawyer and she helps many people.



Our second word is 'judge', J-U-D-G-E. A judge, in Chinese is 法官, is a person in a courtroom who decides what should happen. A synonym for judge is 'magistrate'. An opposite isn't direct, but you could think of 'contestant', who is being judged. Let's try a sentence: The judge listened to everyone's story very carefully.



Next up, we have 'fair', F-A-I-R. It means 公平的. When something is fair, it means everyone is treated equally and correctly. A word that means the same is 'just', and the opposite is 'unfair'. Here’s a sentence: The teacher cut the cake into equal pieces to be fair to all the students.



Our last word today is 'rule', R-U-L-E. Rule means 規則. Rules are instructions that tell you what you are allowed to do and what you are not allowed to do. A synonym is 'regulation', and an antonym is 'chaos' or 'disorder'. Let's make a sentence: We must follow the rules when we play the game.
